Title: New guitar, cheers Twinfan!
Post by: _tom_ on February 02, 2008, 03:05:22 PM
This arrived in the post yesterday, Pearl MIJ LP Custom from twinfan :D Colour looks much nicer in person, just cant get enough light in my room to get a good photo without the flash.

Neck is a bit thicker than on my Epi but it feels really good anyway, I think it sounds a bit brighter/more lively when played acoustically than my epiphone if that makes sense to anyone? Anyway, pretty pleased with it so far, I dont even mind the pickups so I probably wont change them for a while - bit hotter and darker than Mules in my Epi. Will upload a very quick clip of the bridge pickup through my laney but my recording quality seems to have gone pretty cr@p, it always sounds thin and fizzy no matter where I place the mic so I'm thinking either the mics broke or my soundcard is.

edit - 5000th post. I'm such a geek

Also heres the clip http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EJVJL6DY

tbh dave I just cant be arsed with taking them out of my Epiphone, plus they sound great in there anyway  I have a rebel yell I'm not using at the minute which I may try in the bridge, need to wait til I bring my epiphone home and try them side by side. If I dont like the Rebel Yell in it I'll probably just get some more Mules for it, or try Riff Raffs maybe. May try out the gold speed knobs as well, glued the one that broke back together so will give it a go to see how it looks.

Guitar just needs a good setup at the minute I think, the intonation seems way off though that could just be due to the old strings, forgot to bring a spare set back so I cant try that yet. Thats possibly why I find it to sound a bit out of tune some times.

Very nice indeed !

I like the headstock detail plus the way that the detailed / aged cream binding extends into the rest of the guitar.  The  body reminds me of the Peter Green / Gary Moore Les Paul. The whole thing has a gorgeous classic look -  good mojo as they say ...  8)

Enjoy your new baby Tom !  :D

Are you going to age it or leave it as it is?

After more playing thru my amp I think I will have to get some form of BKP for it, theres something about the plugged in tone I dont like but I dont know what, and the middle position is pretty poor. I'm obviously comparing it to my Epi with Mules and it just doesnt sound as good as the tone I get when I use the Epi. Doesnt seem so defined and its a bit hotter which I'm not sure if I like or not :\

I'll try my bridge rebel yell in it over the easter hols, need to get some new pickup rings as these are the annoying ones with 2 screws on one side.

Well I just got back to uni (without the pearl because I dont fancy having both of my guitars left in my uni room) and had a go on the epiphone, I cant tell which I like more  The thinner neck on my epi makes it easier to play leads but the slightly thicker neck on the pearl isnt exactly terrible either. I think the epiphone has a flatter radius, it looks and feels like it does anyway. The acoustic tone isnt actually that much different, the pearl is a bit thicker but the brightness/liveliness is actually about the same. Also, the body on the epi is a bit thicker, but the finish feels more plasticcy.
