Title: More Ceramic Nailbomb metal riffing
Post by: Nolly on February 03, 2008, 02:50:16 PM
I've had a lot of requests to do a longer and less piecemeal clip in a metalcore-ish style. The end result sounds quite Killswitch-y to my ear, and is hopefully the kind of thing that people wanted.

The recording was done with my trusty PGM with its custom Nailbomb set, into a PodXT, using the same patch as in my other clip. I used the neck pickup for the little clean bits, done the Boutique Combo preset tweaked to have less gain and more highs. The heavy riffs are all double tracked and panned hard left and right. I went a little OTT with the 4-part harmony at the end...

Hope you enjoy!

Nolly

P.S I'll do a VHII clip when I've got the neck pickup and installed it. ;)

EDIT: I've changed the link to Pete's version with the drum track added. Sounds a hell of a lot better with drums :)
The original track with just guitars can still be heard here (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6235054)

I see, I see.

You're right about it being Killswitch-y, this is awesome. I went through all 17 pages looking for Nailbomb clips and you and leper, specifically, have made me want Nailbombs so bad. :( NEED MONNEEYYY!!!

Yup, it is. I'm quite happy about the pickups entirely for there sound. But you can never have enough BKPs to be honest.  PDT_006

I got bored, so I added stuff. I've been working on this purely through laptop speakers, so if it sounds terrible, I apologise, also I have a horrid feeling the bass just stops playing towards the end, and I forgot to save this so there's nothing left of it other than the raw file of Nolly's playing.

Hooray for boredom!

There's no amp, it's all PodXT I'm afraid guys! I've been told a couple of times that it sounds like a djent-y Splawn Nitro, but I've never tried one so I couldn't say.

My proper metal rig is a work in progress atm, it should hopefully come together in the next couple of months or so. By the end it should look like:

-Ibanez PGM with Nailbombs
-Blackmachine B6 (in June) (C-Pig/CS)
-Blackmachine B7 (early '09) (PK/NB)
-Framus Cobra --> Orange 4x12 (in black)
-TC Electronics G Major effects unit
-iSP Decimator Pro Rack G noise gate
-GigRig Midi 8 floorboard
-Keeley TS9 mod+ and Compressor
-Morley Wah

I've probably forgotten a few things, but you get the idea..

BBE 482i sonic maximiser
Behringer fcb1010

Thanks Nolly! : :D

No problem mate. The neck pickup is the standard Alnico V magnet, and is a great sounding pickup!

I'm guessing it cost extra? If so, how much extra? And how did you get it? Did you just ask a dealer to send a plea back to Orange HQ for a black one?

Nope, same price! Has to be special ordered from the factory by the dealer, and if Orange don't have any lying around, you have to wait a few weeks for them to build one for you, hence why I don't have mine yet.

I ordered mine from GAK, they also have the cheapest price I could find, and they've been great.

I suppose you rang up GAK then. Grr.. I NEED SOME MONEY! First you for Nailbombs, then ailean for his setup now back to you because of black Oranges! PDT_033

(I'm only messing, BUT I DO NEED MONEY!)

Possibly, I wouldn't know I'm afraid. Didn't know they did non-toaster versions of the TT..

I'm pretty sure they'd be able to do them in black, if they can knock up some 4x12s for the same price as usual ones, I think they'd not dare to think twice for doing for a custom jobby.

I bet you get yours before I get mine Nolly, I'm pretty sure they won't get to GAK until the very day I leave uni for a week, just as an extra kick in the scrote.

To add extra GAS...

ok i was a little leary about even giving this a listen because i positively hate Killswitch and everything that surrounds them, but GODDAMN that is THE sickest metal tone ever produced on this board.  Those ceramic nailbombs are going in my next guitar!

Glad you enjoyed it! Was the playing still too Killswitch-y for you though? :P

The ceramic Nailbomb is amazing, but I'm sure that you could achieve a very similar tone with one of the other BKs as well.

What is the main difference in tone from a usual Nailbamb to a ceramc one?

What is the main difference in tone from a usual Nailbamb to a ceramc one?

A Nailbomb is originally fitted with an Alnico V magnet.

Quote from: Tim
Alnico V is the hottest producing more highs and lows, great for rock applications or where power and cut are important.

And the ceramic:
Quote from: Tim
We use ceramic 8 as do most pickup makers-it is more powerful and essentially more efficient so the resulting tone usually has a very fast tracking bass response with a distinct cut in the highs. Some players find them cold/hard when run clean and they can cause alot of compression from their relatively hot output-again, depending on how you use them, they are capable of good clean tones too but the general consensus is that Alnicos are sweeter run clean.

Hope that helps.
Title: More Ceramic Nailbomb metal riffing
Post by: Nolly on February 08, 2008, 04:22:35 PM
When I asked him, Tim responded with:

Quote
Ceramic = more power as it's a more efficient magnet. This gives a faster bass response, ie tighter and very artriculate cut in the highs with smooth mids. Alnico by comparsion is sweeter sounding and more organic.

He also said that the ceramic Nailbomb is a bit like a hotter Cold Sweat.

Got another clip to put up, just getting a drum track sorted. 80s metal this time!

Excellent, thanks for that I'll stay with the origianls I have then.  I play a cross between gothic and black metal and like how they work for me.

I use Miracle Mans in my thru neck guitars and was thinking of trying an Holy Diver in my two new USA Jacksons I'm getting.  Would you reccomend this judging on the music I do.

I also have the Nailbomb in an old bolt on neck USA Warlock which sound great, but a bit worried on how they'd sound on a thru neck Jackson?

Sorry if this sounds confusing.

I know next to nothing about black/gothic metal, but I imagine something alnico is the way to go. I've never tried the HD, so I can't really comment. The Nailbomb might do just the trick, what worries you about having them in your Jackson?
I must say, I'd be very tempted to put an alnico Warpig in one of your new guitars..

Hi.

Love this kinda tone, but what's your pod's preset?

Can't find a good preset to record even if they are nice in my speakers...
Title: More Ceramic Nailbomb metal riffing
Post by: Nolly on February 24, 2008, 03:53:37 PM
When recording something to sit in band mix, I find you generally need to boost the highs and mids, and rein in the bass. Use the minimum amount of gain you can and get the heavy sound by picking hard and playing as tight as possible.

I have four main presets that I use when recording, one lead, two rhythm, and one clean. If you'd like to get the off me, then PM me, or add me on msn or something. My email is in msn address is in my profile.
