Title: will this Gretsch for 200 GBP new be any good?

Post by: HTH AMPS on February 05, 2008, 09:33:06 PM: I tried those when they first come out - they're cheap, play cheap and sound cheap. This is coming from someone who has a fairly recent Epi Explorer and find it to be a great guitar, so it's not like I'm comparing it to a R9 or anything.

Post by: Ratrod on February 06, 2008, 01:13:03 PM: They're well made Korean guitars. The Electromatic Gretsches I've seen are all better quality than Epiphone. However, I don't like those mini humbuckers and the electronics aren't that great either. You could drop in some soapbar P90's. It's pretty much a drop in replacement. If you're on a budget and don't want to go through the hassle of changing pickups, look for a Special Jet. It's supposed to cure you from Tele-GAS as well.

+1, the cherry one is sexy!!! - but they play like shite and the pickups are a big pile of poo. do you really want to start putting TV Jones pickups in a guitar that far to the budget end of things in order to get into Gretsch territory? :?

Aren't the pickups on the cherry one DeArmonds? I have played old Gretsch's with them and they sound great.

I spent ages um-ing and ah-ing about buying one of those for my Tele, but after listening to some clips I decided they'd be just a bit too bright and twangy for me. They look so cool though! :D

the filtertron+ is a great 'modernized' version of the classic gretsch sound

I have a Gretsch Power Jet that sports a set of TV Jones Powertrons. They're basically Filtertrons with taller bobbins wich allow more winds. The result is a Filtertron with more output and midrange without being 'overwound'.
