Title: Would this look good
Post by: WezV on February 06, 2008, 08:15:37 PM
ok, some of you may remember this i was working on

i never got it finished because commisions come first and i tried a new technique for grain filling, wasnt happy with it and left the guitar in the corner of the workshop for ages.

anyway, i feel like i have been sanding for weeks on various projects so it seemed wise to get this stripped back and ready to finish at the same time.

i am having another guitar sprayed pure brilliant white at the moment .... I am tempted to get this done at the same time.. should i or is it a bad 80's idea.

the pickup will be chrome or black rather than the wartorn and aged miracle man i put on for the picture.  I recently had tim do me a holdsworth style humbucker for the other white guitar and i reckon something similar could work well in this too

... this month, white guitars...

... next month, trans black all the way!!!

I'm getting my Voyager done in Sparkly Black.

Why go for something truly different ;) Sparkle, Flip-colours or even graphics if you so wish.

make it white but keep that neck tenon sandwich wood thing in natural?

not doing anything fancy with this one, the idea is i can get it sprayed soon if i want it white, any other colour and it will have to wit till after next months trans black guitars

i was thinking that i have all the parts except pickup here anyway, the kahler is pretty 80's anyway... why not go for solid white and get it done now

I expected some people to like the wood  but this neck is actually an offcut  from a bass i made.  Its laminated and deep set for strength and stability rather than visual appeal.. but it does look nice.. i may yet leave the back of the neck natural to show it off.

Definately white. Or maybe ivory? But if you can only get a chance for white then go for it.

I love your guitars. Gives me much inspiration. PDT_003

Yeah, white is good - but hide the neck laminations too.  :)

I really don't like white guitars, but others seem to, so go for it. If it looks cr@p claim it as a success and flog it to someone who thought it would be cool.  :D

You have another whiter than white guitar in at the moment? Does it happen to be a swanky superstrat?

I think a white explorer would look awesome and definitely go over the wood neck bit with paint. What about a hot rod black stripe where that neck bit goes?

Pearlescent white would be nicer than just white

definitely do it, as others have said, it'll have an old James hetfield look.

Wez, if you don't do it white, I will loose all respect for you  :P

And you have to put a toothpaste style  logo on there  8)

um, i like it natural.  or a brown sunburst might be nice, though that'd be more 70's.

actually, if you want 80's, it's got a 24 fret neck and a Kahler, it's gotta be neon yellow!!  :P

Any 80's idea is a bad one

I do think it would look good though

I'd think the kahler trem would stand out too much. I like it a lot in natural. Maybe an oiled finish?

Too much Hetfield in 80's to me... Perhaps a pearloid white would be nice, who knows...

i was originally going to go for a clear or trans finish but  after a little experimentation gone wrong there are a couple of small areas on the body that wont look as good as i want... so it will be a solid finish!!

I did seriously consider that but i think white is garish enough for me at the moment

i reckon i will go with the white, do it over the neck as well and maybe experiment with a few different scratchplate shapes and colours once its all together

NOOOOO please dont ruin it.. scratchplates are the only reason i dont own an explorer they look awful on them imho they make them look really dated.

the good thing is i can make a scratchplate and see what it looks like before finally deciding to attach it.

this is one of my old guitars and i really liked the white with black scratchplate

Those are very valid points that i never thought about.

and that scratchplate actually looks really descent.

Did you ever sell that beast of a super strat that you made on here? and if so what did you call it?

Trans Black next month eh? I'm thinking that I might have an idea of what you are spraying!

I like off white rather than dulux brilliant white.  I always liked the white firebirds and SG's.  But black would also look good for the explorer, especially if you are just having one pickup.

off work from the day job next week so lots of guitar stuff to do..  Then all the black ones should be just about ready to go to Nath

gotta increase my pallette at some point, doesnt help having a colour-blind sprayer
