I'm extremely upset to hear that Planet Rock Radio is being axed from the digital airwaves. Unless a buyer steps in to save the day, the station is due to close on March 28. The reason? The station "was not [seen as] an economically viable growth platform" for the company that owns in.
Very narrow minded in my opinion...
Okay, the playlist could've used a thorough revamp - and being willing to play new tracks by old bands and playing new bands that fit the classic rock sound.....
But it was the only haven of good music on the digital airwaves

HA HA... F**K YOU IN THE ASS PLANET ROCK!! F**K YOU ALL TO HELL...
That's what comes from interviewing me, making me present a strategy then stealing most of my marketing ideas and then employing someone cheaper...

Umm...I'm gonna go with Jonathan on this..my weekend breakfast making will not be the same without a soundtrack of classic rock :(
how much do you think they want for it... if we all put in a tenner we could buy it out :)

yeah, i read that in the guardian and was pretty annoyed. of course, it's an ill wind, as shown by afghan dave's response... i remember his thread at the time. :)

Me too!
Cheeky bar-stewards from the sounds of the things. But they were the only stomach-able radio station in my eyes.

:D I agree they badly needed to update there playlist, but i`m not surprised they`ve been droped.

Companies that resort the that kind of tactic don't usually have a great life span, it's a pretty good indicator that they have no good ideas and a sharp focus on the bottom line. Not a great combo when the going gets tough.

shame, i enjoyed listening to this station in the gym.... :x

i quite liked the station as well, too bad.

Yes it is a shame as I liked having it on whilst doing chores at home. I agree that they did need an updated play list. I also remember Afghan Dave's thread too so they have only themselves to blame.
Hopefully another station in the same vein will come along soon.

sorry to bump this, but has anyone heard any more about this? It still seems to be going today, i was under the impression it was meant to be shut down on march 31st? (according to jonathan in the first post, the 28th!)
Just curious, is all. :)

They say on the website
NEWS UPDATE
Tuesday 25th March 2008
As I’m sure you are all aware, Planet Rock has been under the shadow of closure since GCap announced their strategy statement on Feb 11. We were given the deadline of March 28th to find a buyer or be switched off permanently.
Since that time, several parties have come forward and expressed an interest in buying the station, and negotiations are under way. Because of this development GCap have extended the deadline until the end of April to allow these talks to continue.
We’re not out of the woods yet, nor will we be until someone completes the purchase of the station. The good news is that there is hope, and at the very least, an extra month of Planet rock.
Thanks to each and every one of you who have sent messages of support, they have meant a great deal to all of us here at Planet Rock. When we have some more news you will be the first to know.
