Title: Gibson SG Standard/Special
Post by: MrBump on February 18, 2008, 10:55:00 AM
Has anyone found much difference between these two?  The specs suggest mostly cosmetic differences, but are there any other deeper differences (build quality etc).

I only ask because there's about 300 quid difference between the two, and that's a lot for trapezoid inlays...

As far as I can see the differences are that the Standard has Schaller tuners, a hardcase, the neck inlays and the headstock 'Holly' inlay.

I can't see anything else different.

The pickups are covered on a standard, and, I think the neck's bound on a standard too...
I've got three SGs, and my special is not the poor relation. It's not a 60's neck, but the standard isn't either...

There's another pickup difference apart from the covers - the Special has a 490T bridge and the Standard a 498T.  But I'd guess you're going to replace them with BKPs anyway.

I don't think there's any difference in build quality, they're the same basic guitar in terms of construction and neck shape.  But as always with Gibson you get good ones and bad ones.

Yep, all the above is true.  Aside from cosmetics they're essentially the same guitar.  If you find a good Special or Faded they're great value for money.

Abso-bloody-lutely!

It's on my wish-list, as are so many...  Can't decide which route to go with it though - tasteful blues machine (PG Blues?  Mule and Stormy Monday?), or a nutter war-machine (Warpig, oh yes..!)

I'm kinda an eclectic player...
