Title: Egnater Mod 50.....(New amp day)
Post by: AdamB on February 21, 2008, 11:17:38 AM
So, my Egnater was in Stansted from the 9th February, on the 20th, still nothing on the Fedex site :(

Then i get a letter explaining i have to pay all the taxes and VAT, which i do at a cost of £272.56.

A few days later i get a letter saying please pay the customs or my amp will be shipped back to the sender in 4 days?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!

A phone call back to Fedex (i nearly killed them!), the guy that took my payment 'forgot' to update their system, so it said i didn't pay, but a very helpful lady phoned me back and sorted it out. I think she sympathised with the fact i order this late October.

It arrived this morning! YES!!!!

Although all my gear, cabs etc are at my practice space and i can't play it til Tuesday, still, i'm sure it's going to sound amazing and it's very pretty

Phwoar that's gorgeous!

Was this custom built to order in anyway? Like did you choose tolex etc or something?

Why did it take 4 months :O

You don't get to choose tolex etc, they're the Egnater colours like

You get to choose the power valves, 6L6, 5881, EL34, 6V6, 6550 or KT88. You can mix pairs of these in the 100watt version which they're stopping making after they sold the rest off, think there's only 5 left or something.

It took 4 months because i think they're starting to get really really popular and i was on a big list. Plus there was NAMM and Bruces amp building classes

Mac user and Egnater user = very compatible in my opinion...

I gave up on the MOD50 order, just took too long, meanwhile I got a Budda and a Marshall for that money, but not sure yet what was the better choice, yours or mine :O)

We need a long review and PHAT clips!

Right, a short review as i didn't have much time before practice to mess about with it....

EG5 - It seemed a little dark to me, but i didn't try it out in a band situation so i'm going to wait til next time to give it a fair innings

SL2 - WOW!! I set up channel A to be a nice warm clean sound just so i could mess about without deafening anyone really (i should really just use my volume pot) Channel B is where it really came alive! Those indoor storm demos do not do this amp justice! A friend came along who uses a jcm 800 and swears by everything that comes out of it, after hearing this, he's saving up for one. That classic marshall roar with as much gain as you like. I only had the gain on about 1 o'clock.

ERECT - Again WOW WOW!! I had a dual rectifier once and didn't like it, it was too harsh sounding to me, i found that the mids were really ear piercing and the overdrive was a tad fizzy. Anyway, everything i hated about it had been smoothed out. Liquid mesa style gain, saturation heaven!! I set channel A up to be a 'crunch' and channel B, full on overdrive!!

I set everything to 12 o'clock at first (except gain and volume), and this amp still sounds killer! Everything had moved +/- 1 by the end.

Couldn't be happier

Buy one!

EG5 mini review coming next week

I can take a picture next tuesday at practice if you like, it works via the midi socket yeah. 4 buttons, one for each channel, or you can use a midi controller and save up to 128 patches

Total cost, let me see....including shipping, vat, etc, EVERYTHING came to roughly £1600-£1700 max

This egnater lark is intrigueing. Your descriptions of the sound got my interest

How would you compare it to an uberschall (possibly my next purchase unless I find something better) and is there a 100W version?
Title: Egnater Mod 50.....(New amp day)
Post by: AdamB on March 05, 2008, 10:26:41 AM
They do an 100w model that holds 3 modules instead of 2, and is $3000. But i think they've only got like 3 or 4 left now and are just making the 50w ones after that because no one really orders them. The 50w is plenty loud though, my last amp was a 5150 II and it's keeping up. Master on half on the module, master volume on the amp on half too, perfect band practice level!

I've never played through an uberschall, but i'm sure if you asked them, they'd make you a module based on it. And they do the other high gain modules EG 3/4, EG5, SL2, Erect, MHG (modern high gain)
Title: Egnater Mod 50.....(New amp day)
Post by: MDV on March 05, 2008, 11:42:40 AM
Well, I dont really specifically want an uberschall. But for my next amp I was looking at that, herbert, Sig-x, lots of heads that are at least as pricey as this egnater lark, and it sounds like they're getting something right, and are worth looking into.

Can you get new modules sperately if you change your mind, like an RM100?

Looked at the website.

I now have a hard on for these things

And I just bought a powerball!! (thats great, but.....MORE!!!)

Title: Egnater Mod 50.....(New amp day)
Post by: AdamB on March 05, 2008, 09:51:21 PM
Yes, you can buy modules seperatly, ($395 each) they're building a new thing called an E2 that will be available in July, that goes in via the midi through at the back, and can hold 2 more modules. 8 CHANNELS!!!!

I have JJ 6L6 tubes in the poweramp and all EH pre amp tubes

Bruce egnater sold the idea to randall!

You can put the Randall modules in the Egnater and vise vera although i think only 1 of the 2 channels works when you do this

Hmm, well you guys know that I am not the kinda guy who settles on one rig for good, but regarding channels, I have changed a lot.

Now I really need ONE good sound from an amp and do the rest with my guitar. It has changed a lot for me, I used to do a lot of tap dancing, I mean A LOT. Now the focus of my mind while I am playing has shifted from the floor to the guitar, playing dynamics, pickups, volumes, tones, this is where I get it done now.

I gotta say I never experienced this minimalism before, but it's a relief, I can play up much more freely and inspired, driven by this "new" approach. You need a very dynamic and transparent amp, maybe an overdrive/boost for that little extra here and there, and off you go.

Might as well be I am only going through this because I am in denial that I cancelled my MOD50 order though

Okay
I am now on the waiting list for my Egnater M4 and a bunch of modules
I am so impressed with the tones - had to do it really
(http://gtrgear.com/images/M4-NAMM.jpg)

Am gonna team it up with a custom made  single ended power amp - only 10w but that is more than loud enough to use at home/work - especially with Celestion sidewinders which are very efficient / loud

Guess a lot of stuff will be going up in Seconds out/ Ebay
Soldano SP77 preamp
ENGL E530 Modern Rock preamp
Wolftone head and spaker cab
Fender Prosonic combo
ADA MP1 and ADA T100s valve power amp (Nuno rig)
Marshall JCM 800 2205 split channel  50W head (just been serviced)

:(

well, anyways ...

Jonathan, as an old rack addict, you should REALLY try an Axe FX before going down the Egnater route. I don't wanna advertise or sth, but just share my experience. It's unreal how many awesome tones are in there, and trust me, you won't realise that it's a computer once you play it.
There is also a trial period when ordering one ...

Thanks , but I am looking for a rig that has knobs on to be fair
Keeping it as simple as possible because this will be used in the workshop and at guitar shows and ned it to have an interface that most players can get a grip on and the higher tech rack stuff  can be off-putting in that scenario.

I switched previously from a rack in the workshop to a Marshall head for exactly that reason, but wanted more versatility without losing the user friendly interface

Fair enough, there is definitely more sex and touch on an Egnater rig than on an Axe. Latter doesn't offer much for the eye indeed.

Yeah - sadly - as much as I like the Soldano ENGL etc I still like the sound of my ADAs best in my existing rack - Rocktron Pirhana is way cool as well.

I want to make space and raise some £££ for the project
The three rack preamps I'm selling are all adjustable with regular knobs so it's kind of swapping like for like

The Egnater is visually easy to use I agree and most importantly - it's a new toy for me!
