I'm open to suggestions for BKP's for my Patrick Eggle Berlin Plus. It has a mahogany body, maple cap, mahogany neck and an ebony fretboard with 24 frets. Also it's a hardtail and it's coil tapped.
The guitar has a small (but perfectly formed) body - similar to a PRS Custom 24 but slightly smaller.
This is it here:

It currently has a SD Custom Custom bridge and a SD Pearly Gates neck, which are ok but I'm pretty sure with BKP's i could get do better.
What I'm looking for is pickups that can deliver a powerful but smooth lead tone in all positions for blues/rock and classic rock. I'm particularly after a jazzy/bluesy tone in the neck that can overdrive without overpowering - if that makes sense.
My current thunking is that a Rebel Yell in the bridge and a Stormy Monday in the neck could do the trick but as I said, I'm open to suggestions.
Cheers

abraxas bridge

Abraxas clips are in short supply at the moment.
I'd love to hear more of it but there's just not enough for me to go on - to justify getting one.

You could go with the Rebel yell bridge and Abraxas neck, or a Cold Sweat neck. Both give a good driving clean tone and would work with the RY. The SM is a great sounding neck pickup too, if you are wanting the older bluesy tones (the cleaner end rather than the rockier ones).

I have a Stormy Monday AIV/Riff Raff set in my Epiphone Les Paul and it's outstanding. You can nail any blues or classic rock tone you want with that.
The Riff Raff is a bit hotter than the Mule and still sounds great clean.
The Stormy Monday may be the best jazz/blues neck pickup I have ever heard. Incredibly clean and smooth.

I'm looking for subtlety in the neck pup, which I think I'll get from the SM neck.
Basically what I'm after is a contrast from the Emeralds I have in my LP. Both the neck and bridge Emeralds have a quick attack and bite, which is great for a lot of things but not all.
So here I am looking for something ... smoother, kind of more liquidy - if that's even a word
I haven't heard much of the Cold Sweats, so I'll go have a search now.
-
Well, if smooth is what you want in the neck than that is what you will get from a Stormy Monday.
Have you thought about an AIV Mule in the bridge? I would say that or a Riff Raff would match the SM great.

I had thought of Mules, but not Riff Raffs. I'm in the players section at the moment having a root around. I'll take a listen to Mules and Riff Raffs.

I wouldn't think a Riff Raff would give you the kind of smooth tone you're after - I'm sure it's brighter than the Custom Custom you have now. Can't comment on the Mule though.

i think you should wait a while first to get to know the tone of the instrument. You'll either decide you don't need new pickups, or if you do, you'll know exactly what you want.
:)

When you said smooth I was assuming you meant in the neck.
The Riff Raff is not what I would call smooth. It has a good bite and is quite tight.
I think a Stormy Monday AIV calibrated set might also be quite interesting. I haven't heard much about the SM in the bridge but there is a great youtube clip of it.

I would agree up to a point there Dave but I'm comparing the SD's to my Emeralds, which have a lot more clarity.
I had considered swapping the SD's into my LP and putting the Emeralds into the Berlin, to see what it would sound like.

If you're after smooth in the bridge, I wouldn't go for a Mule or a Riff Raff. They're both quite bright pickups.
I'd be tempted to go for a calibrated set of AII Stormy Mondays in that guitar. Classic smooth rock and blues all the way :)

Or PG Blues! But I'd rather go traditional in the LP and have something more modern in the Berlin - just seems more appropriate.
Sorry, not helping much. :(

yeah, i know. i just mean if you wait, you might realise exactly what you want the new pickups in the eggle to do. maybe it's just the fact that i'm extremely indecisive, though.
swapping the emeralds presumably would be a good idea, just to see. as long as you don't mind possibly having to swap them back.
