Title: Buying a new amp
Post by: hhcave on February 22, 2008, 04:19:40 PM
Hey,

Im looking to get a new amp because i've had to get rid of my current amp and the backup solid state just doesn't cut it - my budget is around 700 quid and im looking a decent, solid tube amp (all-rounder even though i mainly play metal/instrumental rock)

The reason i don't need it to be ultra high gain is because im planning on building up a good pedal board which will include a good distortion pedal (Distortius Maximus   )

What would you suggest? I've been looking at the Tiny Terror - what do you guys think of it? Also i have access to a 6505 at the local store but can't try it for a while - what are those like?

Thanks

Engl Screamer you can buy a new one from Thomann for that price - 4 channels, only 1 EQ, superb clean, and great dirty - Goes from hifi clean to all out metal distortion. Its got quite a modern voicing, and takes pedals brilliantly.

screamer is nice. i'd also take a look at a laney tt combo, if you can find one. i've only tried the head, but assuming the combo sounds similar, should be nice for what you want- real nice 80's type of lead tone, which sounds like what you want. koch might be worth a look too.

probably a bunch of options, though.

I'm a fan of Orange so I'll plug them.

The TT is nice amp, and you can get that plus a cab with change from 700 quid. I'd also look into the Rocker range (the rockerverb is a bit out of that price range) I've seen a Rocker 30 combo for about 600.

If you already own a cab then check out the AD30 head, that's around £700.

hmmm okay, i'll have a look at the Engl Screamer...but if i were to buy that i would have to import it into hong kong (which is where the amp will be)... i think realistically, the only choices are some sort of Orange amp or the 6505?

If you are using pedal-based distortion, surely you need to look at a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or Blues Deluxe. These are very well respected loud, clean amps, which are globally used for pedal-based rigs on a budget.
The AC30CC is also an excellent, well-respected clean base for a pedal-base rig. Despite it's meagre 30 Watts, it has a lot of clean headroom. It's almost supernaturally loud for a 30 Watter.
If you are intending to gig with the amp at all, steer clear of the Tiny terror. it simply will not have the grunt (or clean headroom) to stick with a loud gigging band. Rehearsal, yes. Quiet drummer yes. But why limit yourself.

Please also clarify whether you need a combo or whether a head will do.

As I remember when the average AC30 is cooking it's putting out around 48 watts. Though I'm sure that HTH can provide better figures
