Here's the new updated bit with everyone's input. This list assumes the pickup is based somewhat off of the tone of the song/album/band/guitar it's named after. If there's any further input, please throw it up, I'll edit this list to make it fit. (I love some of the specifics... like Peter Green's famous Les Paul, or Brian Robertson's hotter wound Les Paul pickups..). Also, it would be neat to hear Tim pipe in on this one... Have we done well?
Humbuckers
Stormy Monday: Allman Brothers Song
PG Blues: Peter Green--in particular a reference to his famous Les Paul
The Mule: Warren Haynes of Government Mule
Riff Raff: AC/DC Song
VHII: Van Halen
Black Dog: Led Zeppelin song
Emerald: Thin Lizzy Song--but even more specificly Brian Robertson playing his Les Paul Custom . LP Customs had a hotter wound bridge pickup by the 1970s , hence the Emerald has a higher DC than a PAF type pickup
Abraxas: Santana Album
Holydiver: DIO!!!
Cold Sweat: Thin Lizzy Song--John Sykes' Les Paul Custom and the sounds that he brought to Lizzy and also his work on Whitesnake's 1987 album
Miracle Man: Ozzy Osbourne Song
Nailbomb: the offshoot band by Max Cavalera from Sepultura
Warpig: Black Sabbath Song
Painkiller: Judas Priest song and album.
Geoff Whitehorn - 'Crawler': The band Geoff Whitehorn plays in
Steve Stevens - 'Rebel Yell': Billy Idol song
Strat® Single Coils
Apache: a 1960 instrumental song originally recorded by The Shadows
The Sultan's: Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits?
Mother's Milk: Red Hot Chili Peppers album
Irish Tour: Rory Gallagher album
Slow Hand: Album by Clapton, also his nickname.
Trilogy Suite: Trilogy Suite song off of Trilogy album by Yngwie Malmsteen
The Sinner: Judas Priest song on which KK Downing used to play a strat and do a solo spot live. His strat seemed to have quite a lot of beef to it and so does the Sinner pickup
Soapbars
BKP-90: ???
BKP-91: ???
BKP-92: ???
(These are likely not band/artist/album/etc... related)
Humbucker Sized P90s
The Manhattan: Relates to the New York Jazz scene as was
Mississippi Queen: Song by Mountain
Tele® Single Coils
Blackguard: named after the original blonde Telecasters with black pickguards
Country Boy: reference to Albert Lee's party piece
Yardbird: The band named Yardbirds
Brown Sugar: Rolling Stones song.
The Boss: Nickname of Bruce Springsteen
Piledriver: Album by Status Quo
Thanks to all for your help everyone! I find this kind of stuff interesting...

I think that's 100% tbh.
-
Yep that looks pretty right to me.
I'm a grammar nazi though so the grocer's apostrophe in the thread title is really irritating...
-
forgot the manhattan.... never forget the manhattan. Not sure if its a music reference though

Well done Scott.

The only one I can think of is the Eric Johnson song. And that IS sorta jazzy, but I don't think he used P90s.

forgot the manhattan.... never forget the manhattan. Not sure if its a music reference though
It relates to the New York Jazz scene as was....
A world full of archtop gutars like D'angelico etc

And the Benedetto Manhattan guitar, a brilliant bit of art deco guitar design.
-
Sinner - yes it is the title of a Judas Priest song on which KK Downing used to play a strat and do a solo spot live. His strat seemed to have quite a lot of beef to it and so does the Sinner pickup
This video may make it clearer

Anyone wanna talk about hip-hop and gangstas?
Sorry.
Just to clear up that question mark on Scott's original post, Abraxas was indeed Santana's second album.

thats kind of what i was thinking... more to do with the art deco style rather than an actual specific song or band.
Now you have me wondering why i didnt post a benedetto in the 'guitars that make you go wow' thread.

Mississippi Queen: Song by Mountain
Yes indeed - clip below
Leslie West was a big guy in those days (1970)
Played a Les Paul Junior with a great sounding P90 at the bridge
The MQ is a similar unit in a humbucker housing

What about Stormy Monday as a Gary Moore song? :?:

What about Stormy Monday as a Gary Moore song? :?:
It's not most associated with him, though. If there was a Gary Moore pickup it should be called the "Parisienne Walkways" - rubbish name for a pickup though.
-
"Parisienne Walkways"
Remember the Jeff Pilson joke about Dokken's original name? PDT_008

"Parisienne Walkways"
Remember the Jeff Pilson joke about Dokken's original name? PDT_008
Yes - but Dokken rhymed with Rockin
-
Sorry, I really don't follow the above 'joke', may someone please enlighten me?
(I will feel mighty stupid if this is something obvious and I am just braindead)
-
Stupid joking around quote on the Dokken home video that that band were going to call themselves "Parisienne Gentlemen"
I suspect that Ben (TO) knew that maybe only I would know about it .....
More silliness:

I have to confess I didn't... and I hate not knowing things!!

The manhattan??? I don't know what this is?
Also-- Is there any worth for adding the P-90's? I don't see any neat musical reference there.......or is there?
I've fixed the grammar...don't know what I was thinking with that one.

I would think that Empty Rooms would be most associated with him. A much cooler pickup name, I would buy some. :P
Empty Rooms, that is a good idea

Unshameless BUMP!
