Title: strat shock
Post by: gwEm on February 26, 2008, 12:36:21 PM
well, we had a jam session last night, and picked up a friends strat... i must say i quite liked it, which is unusual for me.

* does this mean i'm getting older, wiser and more mature?
* do I just like the 25.5" scale length after playing my steinberger so often
* is it because i've been listening to Rainbow and Roth-period Scopions so am in tune to the sound of light fender single coil drive

anyhow its great motivation to finish off my Squire Cyclone - it just needs a bridge single coil now.

sorry for anecdotal post ;)

I love my Strat. Comfiest guitars ever to play.

I actually have the most fun guitar wise on a cheapo strat.

I don't know if it's because the single coils feel more responsive, or something... though this one's bridge isnt going through a tone pot so maybe that's it.

A shame that i don't like the sound of it, the 'squack' or whatever you'd call it that you get with single coils just aint for me, if i could get a smoth, more humbucker style tone out of pure singles i think i might be happy.

I think Strats are an acquired taste. I got one a few months ago but after a brief honeymoon period, I couldn't get used to the longer scale length.

I have mine for sale at the moment, still at a low price (£200) on evilbay.

it felt really inspiring, i was improvising in a completely different way to usual. maybe it is those single coils, though the neck seemed very natural also.

machinehead: can hardly believe no one bid on your guitar!

Ah early days yet .. 7 hours to go  :D

To be honest I only paid £200 + £20 Postage for it so, I'll be ok if it stays at that price.

That's exactly how I feel, I get more ideas and "want" to play more when I have my Strat on.

Strats are my favourite guitars, you can get a ton of sounds from them and I like the 25.5 inch scale.

Can't go wrong with that!  :D

I like Strats, though not as much as I like Teles.  They both certainly make me play differently - still badly, but differently.

i'm actually thinking about getting a pink hello kitty strat just to play about with. i would change the scratch plate to a black tom delonge style one.

EDIT: however, i just brought some other guitar stuff and should probably save my money

I was never a Strat man, even though for the first 6 years years playing I had Yamaha Pacificas. Couldn't get away from needing a humbucker in the bridge. Single coils in the bridge were not for me.

Now I have a US Series Strat and I love it. And, like Philly, I play differently when I'm playing the Strat - way more bluesy.

I think my intital dislike of Strats may have something to do with the fact that most of the examples I played between the ages of 13 and 21 (when my dad bought himself a nice one) were complete and total cr@p. A nice Strat is a joy, a bad one is beyond gastly.

As I have hardly played anything else for years now, I feel at home with a Strat. Even a friends or perhaps one in a shop will feel basically ok for me-generally a few tweaks and I have them as I like them.

I picked up a strat once and to my suprise, quite liked it...
Long story short, I spent months and hundreds of £ building one, and I've only played it 2 or 3 times. I just don't have a use for that sound  :?

I'm the opposite - don't get on with humbuckers  - even on my Mule/MQ Esprit I find myself going for the MQ.  In fact the bucker is only used for Beano era impressions, not for mucking around - 9/10 I just go for the Strat.

i got one of those, spur of the moment novelty value thing! the thinking was "stick a warpig in it and it'll be hilarious playing crushing metal with it!"

when i got it the setup was utterly awful, but after a few tweaks it turns out to have a fantastic neck! and a great, snappy acoutic tone.  the neck is actually lightly flamed maple, which was a bit of a surprise.  anyway, i'm wanting to put a VHII in it now because i love the guitar.  the necks too narrow for finger picking and such, but apart from that it's now one of my absolute favourite guitars.

so, a pink £100 strat with a little girl's cartoon character on it is now my preferred axe over a Gibson Les Paul and a hand built Eggle! go figure

I'll never be able to bond with Strats. They don't feel right to me.

Now if you like a Fender tone with single coils and want to be a grown up, try a Telecaster.

^ Hehe, yeah, got one of those too. Love the sound. Thinking about selling it though, not getting on with the maple fretboard, sadly.

Same here, I loved how it looked but the feel and sound didnt work for me.

I really want to know if I'd be happy with p90s - the idea is great, fatness of a humbucker with the grit and clarity of singlecoils. I guess I need to try some out, I've never even played a p90 guitar :\

Yes, I am afraid so.  It's nothing but Joni Mitchell, Phil Collins, Billy Joel, Sting, and Air Supply (for when you really want to get funkkee) from here on out.
