Title: Removable Pup Covers?
Post by: silentrage on February 26, 2008, 01:40:30 PM
I was just wondering if there are any kind of removable covers for pups.

By that I mean something you can just snap on and off at will, without any kind of tool or hassle.

I ask because sometimes I have my pups set so close to the strings that palm muting causes the strings to contact poles on both pups and produces a sharp squeel.
Some interesting effects can be done with this, plus some bending/whammy bar, but it would be un-desirable when you're trying to PM.

So if you wanna play a song that incorporates both techniques, you'd need to be able to have a kind of cover that can be snapped off easily, perhaps jus a flat plate that covers the poles and has magnets or something?

I know, I have too much time on my hands. ^^

Becuase of microphonic issues, they'd have to be plastic covers.  They they wouldn't stick to the magnets  ;)

If you're clipping the pole pieces, how is removing the covers going to help?  The poles will be in exactly the same place as they were with the covers on  :?

What I was thinking was, a cover would prevent the clipping because the poles aren't exposed, I'd just leave it on for most of the time for rhythm, and take them off when I need them to clip.
Plastic would make sense because they're non-conductive, now the sticking part...

I recently found those: http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/covers_humbucker.htm

Bottom right are plastic ones. I think they are removable but I'm not really sure though. There are also for single coils too.
