Title: curious...
Post by: Spitfire on February 26, 2008, 08:43:51 PM
im not going to go throw these straight into a guitar just because of this, but im curious...

what BKs would be the closest to what slash uses??? im guessing a stormy monday set with Alnico 2s in both... as the SDs he use are pretty low output alnico 2 pickups.

Im just still looking what to put in my 3 pickup SG.. i know the easy choice is a riff raff set... but i just dont want to do that... I have been warned off black dogs as it may be too dark... im just worried if i get a set of mondays (or Riff Raffs) that i may be lacking power from the bridge...

im only looking for a pretty much jimmi page / slash level of output though, tremonti maybe.

AND purely on an aesthetic level... i have a white SG... with gold hardware, i may go for zebra pickups for it.. but im just wondering what to put in the middle... i dont like the idea of a double black pickup... but then another zebra might look unbalanced to me... i may just put gold covers in.. but any ideas??

cheers, Dave.

This is starting to freak me out.

Every time i have a question on my mind lately, someone eles comes along and ask's it!

I'm after exactly the same thing you are, especially with the tremonti thing.

I personally haven't liked what i've heard of the Riff Raff's much, not really my thing, and that's all that seems to be suggested for SG's...

yea, as i cant go and test all these pickups out in my guitars... you have to go off advice really.. and im just not totally convinced by any one pickup... im not blown away by the riff raffs.... but i have been advised against the black dogs which i was going to go for originally..

Riff Raffs don't really have power, but they have bite......

Have you spoken to Tim about your question? He offers really solid advice IMO and really doesn't mind loads of questions being fired at him.

Cocaine?

Zebra pickups on a white SG  :? I'd go with gold if thats existing hardware.

Actually I think a pair of zebras in bridge and middle with a gold covered in the neck would look quite neat. Jimmy Page style adapted to a 3-pickup sg. How about a Mule set for bridge and middle and an AII Stormy for the neck?

Edit: I kisekaed it up becasue I thought it sounded cool. I'm a geek.

I think it has too much bite though, whenever i hear clips i'm reminded of really grainy images or sandpaper or something.

Not that it's a bad pup, oh no, it's quite unique really! not my thing though!

I'd go with reverse zebra & a double cream in the middle.

I found that Alnico II Stormy Mondays sound really sweet in an S.G. !  :D

If you are worried about bridge output, then consider how nice the SMs have a unique ( and matching ) bridge voice - as opposed to raw power.

As for the p/u colours, I would go for a matching set of 3, in this case choosing gold covers to match the rest of your guitar's 'furniture'.

That is going to be one enviable guitar !

Would you say they compare well to say, the 59 Classic that gibson do? 'cause then it'd be up my street, everything i've heard so far with the Riff Raff's is too much bite for me. At least for a main guitar.

I asked tim, he mentioned Riff Raff, Stormy Monday, Warpig and Miricle Man for SG's...

Miricle Man got me thinking! i wonder how that would sound? i bet it'd be massive.

Tony, have you got a MM bridge? i may need to borrow one...

Now i want two Vintage SG's, one for Vintage tone and one for teh high gain riffage.

Double white on all 3 would be nice!  I would go with all Rebel Yells or Rebel Yell bridge and middle with a Stormy Monday neck or all Stormy Mondays!

Here is a Les Paul Artisan clip (I know it's not an SG but thought it may give you an idea). He has a Stormy Monday set and it sounds sweet,

Have you thought about a Stormy Monday set with a Riff Raff in the bridge? I just happen to love that combo!!  :D

I hear the '59 classics can be a bit strident in the top end, whereas SMs are sweeet !  They have a lovely clarity though, and so in common with other lower gain pickups you notice the dynamics more - which in turn makes them sound lively .

I can imagine that you would be tempted by MMs too though, as if there ever was a BKP that I wanted to 'go a bit daft' with,  it would be a set of MMs

So much choice !

The Stormy Monday is far sweeter than the 59 classic, much more clarity in my opinion.

Ohh you make it sound very nice, do you have pair of SM's in a LP or SG?

See i'll be using whatever i get at classic to modern rock gain settings, but i've always thought that something like the SM would be able to handle it, and i don't really see the need for high output pickups for myself... except for being silly ofcourse.

I wonder if the SM wth AII magnet would be like the SD AlincoII Pro... get me a nice slash esque tone out of an SG? that'd be a bit nice.

You're in Leeds! Ahh! *sniffs out those BKP's*

Have you considered a Mississippi Queen for the middle position?  I have a neck/bridge set of them in a SG and they sound fantastic. I've got no idea why I suggest it for the middle, just have a feeling it might work well with a bridge/neck SM.

It's 57 Classics guys  ;)

And Fourth Feline has SMs in an SG  :)

Also, Ian... Totally unrelated to what you just said, but WHAT KIND OF STRAT IS THAT?  :o   It is GORGEOUS.  Are there pics anywhere?

Hi Adam,

My SMs are currently sitting in their box, just in case I sold the S.G.

They have been in a Les Paul - and ( as Twinfan rightly pointed out ) spent most of their life in a '76 S.G. Standard.   In the Les paul they sound somehow brighter, and in the S.G. somehow even sweeter. ( The physics of that confounds me ). 'Guru' Tim did say they would do though.

I therefore feel that you are going to get closest to the tones you describe by putting SMs into an S.G. If I was planning on keeping my S.G. indefinately, I would use SMs for sure !

:D

They'll sound brighter in the Les Paul because of the maple cap?  I have identical pickups in my Gibson SG and my Gibson LP and they sound brighter in my Les Paul.  I put it down to the maple cap on the LP, and the sweetness of an all mahogany body in the SG.

Nice one !  :D

Thanks for clarifying that mystery - it makes perfect sense put that way. I am glad to know my ears aren't going faulty with (relative ) age ...

The Stormy Mondays would deffinately be the right fit for a slash esque tone, sweet and open. I would say that gold covers would look best aswell for that sg

If you'll like that, you'll love the designs I've been doing for whenever i get around to making my own guitars. ;)

Big major 'if' i get around to learning the trade... no where to do wood work at the moment! but damn have i got ideas.
