just looking for suggestions here. i have to do a history project about a song about a 20th century topic. it'll be a powerpoint presentation where i play the song and show pictures and stuff. can't think of any songs...
-
Iron Maiden - Aces High - Battle of Britain 1940
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain
Or
Saxon - Dallas 1pm - JFK assasinated
-
Queensryche - My Global mind - about information overload from the internet etc and the feelings of helplessness it creates
-
wow, aces high! never thought of that song, had never listened to the lyrics. i think i may definitely do this song. i was considering doing Rammstein- Ramstein, but then everyone in my class would probably think i was weird as shite. My whole class is pretty much all into rap and hip hop, so whatever i do will probably seem odd.
-
If it were the 19th century, I'd make the class listen to all 30 minutes of my awful attempt at Gettysburg (1863)... lol!
-
20th Century Boy by T-Rex!
-
Holidays In The Sun. The Sex Pistols.
-
Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys. Theres a few other by DK that spring to mind, just the lyrics, but can't remember the song names, its been ages since I have listened to them

dangit, that's the one i was going to say.
maybe U2 with sunday, bloody sunday? of course, you'd have to get past the fact that U2 are awful and the song is terrible (disclaimer: in my opinion).
EDIT: scorpions wind of change!
or slayer, angel of death (about "dr" josef mengele, right?)... maybe a bit heavy for school though.
-
just cover all the bases and choose "Sympathy for the Devil"
-
most of megadeths back catalogue, a lot of it is about war and the politics of the time.
peace sells.. etc etc
fat bottom girls by queen.. about the state of the bottoms of the girlies and spreaddage
-
Scorpions wind of change is a good one
A lot of people do not know that it's origins relate to the political/economic change in Russia instigated by Gorbachovknown as Perestroika and what it meant to the people - a sense of hope at the time (there were a lot of downsides that came in afterwards but that is not what the song is about)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perestroika
Later the song became connected with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the changes within the Scorpions' German homeland, such as the reunification
I've spelt it out as I dont know if such facts would be taught or wdespread knowledge in US highschools
-
Megadeth - Blackmail the Universe
basically about WTF is happening these years w/ the war in Iraq and all

ha, slayer. i'd love to play that. however, i don't know if anyone in that class would talk to me anymore after that. my school really does blow. I'm still thinking aces high probably, or possibly even 2 minutes to midnight.
oh yeah, i thought about Gettysburg. then i was like, oh yeah, civil war = 1800's.
megadeth- holy wars would be a good one.

How about "The Reefer Man" by Cab Calloway? Drug humor >30 years before Woodstock!

i'm debating between the scorpions song or maiden. scorpions has better lyrics and meaning to it, iron maiden just plain kicks ass.
-
Rather belatedly, I thought that Pink Floyd's "Us & Them" provides a valid comment upon the 20th Century at many levels.
-
so i'm doing wind of change, though i could use some help. i read both the article on that song as well as the perestroika article, but still kind of confused. yes, we haven't really learned anything about the fall of the berlin wall. so was gorbachev not that great of a leader, but because of his attempts to reform the country it ended up bringing the fall of the wall and freedom? like was perestroika a bad thing that brought about a good thing, or was perestroika meant to bring down communism?
-
How about Rooster by Alice in Chains? It's about Vietnam, and it has some real footage in it! 8)
-
Oh sorry, didn't read further down where it said you had chosen one.
