Post by: noodleplugerine on March 01, 2008, 07:44:17 PM
Was watching the Eurovision show, and noticed one of the guitarists using one of these:

http://www.yamaha-europe.com/yamaha_europe/uk/10_musical_instruments/30_guitars_basses_amps/60_electric_guitars/10_electric_guitars/20_rgx_guitars/04_RGXA2/index.html

Looked gorgeous on stage - What do you lot think of it?

Oh Noodle, what are you (and I) doing watching this rubbish?

Those Yamahas do look nice.  Bit limited for choice of replacement pickups though.

Lmao - Tell me about it...

The funny thing is, I didn't have any idea what the guitar was, just that it looked very pretty - But for some reason the first thing I googled was Yamaha - And I now remember seeing this guitar a while ago - Talk about subconcious direction!

And about the pickups - Those are pretty, I'd just get them rewound.

oh, it's that new yamaha.. it does look pretty good
and one of the very very few guitars, on which LSR tuners dont look out of place

I had a go on one of them a while ago. Felt allright but it sounded pretty cr@p, and the switching was annoying. Really light, it didnt feel right to me.

its the construction that interested me... basically a balsa wood core (as far as i can tell) with a hardwood cap front and back.

its a very untraditional instrument and i am glad makers like yamaha are willing to give it a go - especially at such a low price

the switching is a gimmick, but at that price all gimmicks are good and some may find it usefull

... and i reckon P-90's would fit and if not alternative covers could be made

Agreed, P-90s should fit if these are the same size as the DiMarzio Q-100s Yamaha used to use.

And we should expect to see this Yamaha appearing to represent the UK at Eurovision...

If they lost that horizontal line leading to the bridge pick up i might like it.

But that line is REALLY badly placed, i just photoshoped it out and now the one going to the control section just looks like a nod towards a Telecaster and seems to fit in.

Though none at all is even better...

Ace looking guitar though, would be great for Daft Punk! haha. Areodynamic solo!

I'm getting one from eBay right now, I hope those pickups are rewindable (is that even a word?), I fear they are epoxy potted :(

If they're the same as the DiMarzios, the covers are removable and inside they're just smaller-than-usual humbuckers.  But yes, they might be encapsulated in a load of goop.

I think I'll have the bridge rewound as a Warpigs then  I barely use the neck pickup and it sounded fine when I tried a RGX-A2 a few month back :)
I'll get back to you guys if I win the auction.

Needs a black fingerboard (Ebony or Carbon), but otherwise beautiful. Not keen on the lightness or the tone of it though

What advantage or difference does this type of construction have over a normal guitar?

lightweight wood can be quite airy and resonant, but its not strong enough to withstand much abuse or hold a scew very well.  They have gotten around tht by adding hardwood caps and also making sure the bridge is connected all the way through the body so it is nice and stable.

The closest thing i can think to the yamahas body construction is a spruce parker fly at 10 times the price

A shop that's selling them seems to like them... Go figure...

But either way, quite an informative review.

I'm not sure "hideous" is a word I'd use, but it made me want to yawn just looking at it !

And there was the Les Paul Studio Lite, with a "chromyte" (that's gibson for balsa   ) centre block:

http://www.gibson.com/products/gibson/LesPaul/StudioLite.html

I think they also used "chromyte" in a Howard Roberts Fusion model and the strat-ish US-1.
