Title: Replacing my Warpigs

Hello all,

I haven't been on this board for ages but have owned a calibrated set of alnico warpigs for over a year now. They really are a fantastic pickup and nothing I have heard even comes close...

BUT!

I'm after something different now and have decided to go lower output, vintage with a decent balance across all the frequencies. Emailed Tim a few times (thanks Tim!) and have come to the conclusion that The Mule is the pickup for me.

Basically, I just need to decide which covers (if any) to go for. I have a music man axis (no trem) in vintage sunburst + rosewood fretboard. Any ideas?!

At the moment I'm leaning towards either open/black or covered/nickel

Hmmm, don't have the means to do that myself yet. No camera. I'll get a pic of my guitar though... just a sec!

I think it looks fine and dandy with zebra 'buckers, no cover needed.

Yeah, it does look good with uncovered PUPs but I'm wondering whether the tonal difference would be enough to justify getting covers. According to Tim the tone with covers would be "warmer and open have more presence by comparison".

If its not much of a difference I'll go for the uncovered option but I have little experience of comparing covered vs uncovered.

Someone on here once said that the difference is very, very minimal... that if you were to look at tonality on a numerical scale to show bass, mids and treble, 1 being low and 10 being high that adding covers would maybe take the treble from 6.5 to a 6.

Something like that.

So if you're expecting massive tonal differences... apparently, don't.

Great, just wanted to confirm that. If the difference is that marginal I'd rather not have the cover purely for the sake of aesthetics  :D

Right, I'm off to the shop - will report back when I've swapped them out and had a crank
