Title: Ultimate 80's 1 pickup axe
Post by: samoth2 on March 03, 2008, 07:19:34 PM
I'm always thinking of building myself a Warmoth, and now the $ is so low i might even do something about it.

Once i wanted the entire guitar to be exotic woods but i think i like a more simple look now.

I think i want a strat body with a reverse KWS neck. But i don't really know which woods. I'm guessing an alder body and an all maple neck would be typical 80's?
I would want a locking tremolo, however i don't know which kind is best, so i would like some recommendations there to.
I also don't know which tuning pegs to choose, so i could use help there to.
It will only have a volume knob.

Then there is the looks question, what colour would look cool?

To sum it up i need help on which woods, bridge, tuning pegs and pickup to choose. Plus how it should look.
When its done i would want a no bullshitee 80's metal machine, that would be  used for Dio, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Crüe, Priest, VH old Gary Moore and similar.

Thank in advance everybody.

My Warmoth/semi-warmoth creations:

Alder will be a great choice. All 3 of those guitars have Warmoth necks on em.

For a bridge, go with an OFR. I prefer using a standard nut with a locking nut behind it.

You MUST go reverse headstock or it won't be proper 80s, unless you're doing the Charvel thing like I did with Yoshi.

Good luck with it!

The must used body woods in 80 was Basswood... It would be the cheaper too. Korina and Mahogany are good choices too!
To neck could be almost anything...

For the colour I would say: ANY flake color of their site (if you want it looks like a 80's of course)

Bridge: Original Floyd Rose or Schaller or Gotoh... they're good floyd roses...
Tuners: Schaller, Gotoh... can't go wrong with that...

Pickups: I believe Miracle Man or Nailbomb... But there is many pu that would work: Holydiver, Painkiller, Cold Sweat.............

I looked through all your axes before posting to get some inspiration, and I don't think i want any dots, 'cause the clean look just looks so awesome

Forgot:
Perhaps, for the bands you said, a 24-3/4" scale lenght could work very well!

The two guitars i have are both mahogny, so i would like something else, but i have always thought of basswood as discount wood so i wasn't really considering that.

Plain white with black hardware and zebra or black pickups, or even plastic covers would be quite 80s I guess. ;)

BTW TO, do you order the necks for longer nut pocket to fit the normal nut and the locking one? I'm interested in a similar thing using the Khaler 5514 string lock (the one without allens).

Thanks

Sorry fot the hijack.

I would say it has to be A Holy Diver for that mid to late 80s sound 1983-89
Or a Rebel Yell would work well

I don't think it has to be a reverse headstock - although they do look cool

An old Charvel model 2 would be cool, or a Kramer Baretta

I would think ---
For most old school or NWOBHM, Holy Diver
For early power metal that spawned from the New Wave, Cold Sweat
For metal spawned in the LA area, Miracle Man
For the 'big 80s' splashy sound, Rebel Yell
For late 80s Shrapnel style shred, Nailbomb

What do you think, Jonathan?

Quote

Definitely not, but it does add a more instant, cliche 80s vibe.

What about a gunslinger or a Strat with buckers and an OFR? Nothing's more metal than an Iron Maiden strat!

Some sort of Baretta look-a-like in plain white with a simple dotted 'board would get my vote.

I'd go for an alder body, maple board and a Holy Diver.

And definintely a reverse headstock, preferebly white to match the body.

Damn I need another Charvel...

But dude - Maple neck + fretboard, Alder Body, Original Floyd Rose Trem. Then keep the neck and fretboard unfinished and get a White finish on the body, with either all black or all gold hardware.

Then send it to me  :D

oh, man, that's awesome. i'm not much fussed on reverse headstocks (that one has a normal one, which is cool)... i like either the strat headstock or the banana kramer one.

red chequerboard or bullseye on that white would be cool too.

plain red or yellow, with slanted 'bucker, is awesome too.

bah! i will jump on this thread ;)

more types of guitars than superstrats were available with one pickup in the 80s...!

The 80s were definately a special time - it seems everyone has a different memory and interpretation of it. Was discsussing abit with Jonathan yesterday.

Metal-wise I prefer the early 80s... Not so keen on the over-glammed late 80s period. But there was some great electronic music that came out in this time.

Not to be a troll, but I'm not sure I agree with this. I would pick a Riff Raff for that. When I hear the phrase NWOBHM, I think the 1979-1981 period - Saxon, Diamond Head etc etc. Maybe its a question of interpretation.

Still need to finalise string spacing and nut as well as giving the frets a final polish but it all seems pretty good so far.  Its a holydiver in the bridge and a kahler hybrid trem that can be locked off as a hardtail.

its a single volume control but i couldnt resist putting a series/parallel switch on the push/pull to basically give two power settings

the neck is a 5 piece, maple wenge and walnut neck and the tenon extends all teh way to the bridge pickup cavity... basically the thing is very solid

still wondering about things like a chrome pickup ring or a black scratchplate but that would take away from the 80's vibe - might try it anyway

TROLL! PDT_008

I don't think I need to state my interpretation of the new wave, it's pretty well documented what my knowledge base on the subject is.

Having both of those pickups, I will still stand by my original statement. The HD does most new wave tones. The Riff Raff will only get so saturated before it breaks apart.

Saxon, Angel Witch, Tokyo Blade, Elixir, Chariot, Maiden, Def Lep, Diamond Head ... will one pickup nail ALL of them?  No, of course not.

But the Holy Diver will do a lot more justice to it than the Riff Raff.

This is, of course, IMHO, IIRC, etc etc etc

Slash had a couple of those Jackson Firebirds before he got onto Les Pauls.  i think you see him with one on the inner sleeve of either Appetite For Destruction or Lies.  you can also see him with a BC Rich Warlock, another eighties metal axe!

IMO, i think holy diver is definately the answer for NWOBHM. I have a Fender Deluxe Stratocaster with some seymour duncan hotrails in. Cream coloured with a bright gold pickguard, and thats a pretty damned 80's sounding guitar, very iron maiden ^^

that sounds similar to the holy diver IMO, the holy diver being that much better though obviously :D

I've said for years that a Hello Kitty Strat fitted with a hot humbucker and a Floyd Rose would be the most rawk guitar of all-time.
