Righty I want me some p90 pickups. Not as easy as it sounds, your typical SG/LP with '90s wont do. I have criteria... I need a 25.5" scale neck and love the feel of a telecaster.
Basically I want a tele with P90s. Ignoring the Squier custom II thing (I want a good guitar, money aint much of an issue here) what are my options?
I'm thinking either:
A 72 tele thinline or deluxe, new scratchplate and MQs (sounds very sexy...)
Getting a custom tele body knocked up with some traditional p90s, classy and I love the 'standard' tele set up.
What else is out there?
-
Sounds like a Feline job :P
Get to work Jonathan
-
Fender did a mahogony-bodied Tele a few years back with P90s, that would fit the bill if you can find one (Peter Cooks would be a good bet)
-
Oh yes, the Tele Jr, that was a lovely looking guitar :) . I can only find this pic, but most of the ones I've seen were natural (or maybe cherry) finish with a black scratchplate. It has a set mahogany neck, by the way.

Ohhhh :o
Pretty!
-
Oh god. I just made a mess. I'm starting to sound like Mr Ed, but I just spuffed.
I'll try finding some info on the tele jr. That looks so sexual. Either that or wait a while and either build one myself/get a custom job.
-
yeah i just spiffed or spuffed or whatever too. that tele jr. is awesome!
-
it will not be complete without BKP90s, stock p/ups are nowhere near as good tone.
-
Going down a slightly different route, you could probably mod a second hand Telesonic. I can't be sure, but I reckon those DeArmond pickups aren't a million miles away from P-90's in size.
It's six of one, half dozen of the other, really, between it and the Tele' Junior. The bolt on neck might give you more of a Tele' feel, but then the switching's all wrong, and neither has a particularly Tele' bridge. Ah, decisions, decisions
-
How about a Strat-o-sonic or whatever they call them?

The Aerodyne Telecaster had a P90 in the neck and they were fit.
-
+1 for the Telesonic. Excellent guitar. The pickups (DeArmond 2k's) are very similar sounding to P90's and there's still plenty of Tele twang too.
-
This one comes out in May. I'm thinking about getting one. P90's & a TOM :D
-
If you want to make it yourself, you could get a Warmoth body routed for P-90's and any one of their necks. They build everything for 25.5" scale (even Les Pauls).
Wez is building me a 25.5" scale P-90 guitar, but I'll let him give the details when he is ready!

I've always said that Tele's would be 134521 times cooler with a T.O.M. instead of the standard Tele bridge.
HANG ON! Do you mean Jim ADKINS, from Jimmy Eat World?! I had no idea her was getting a signature Fender!
-
That's the man. He played a red one & a black one when I seen them on thier current tour. 8)

You can HB sized P90's (not sure about BKP's though). That might open up some options.

hey i'm always willing to talk about guitars
phils is a through neck SG with two P90's. The neck is a 3 piece, 2 large chunks of mahogany with a centre strip of wenge. The body wings are korina. Nice ziracote fretboard with birdseye maple binding and no inlays
as he says it is a 25.5" scale with 24 frets. tall and wide for 1-12 and tall narrow for the rest to stop it getting cramped up the top end. I have the bridge (schaller wrap-around) in the same position as on a gibson SG so it still looks right and allows full access to all 24 frets. that gives the guitar quite a long neck but the through neck construction and dual Carbon fibre neck reinforcemnt with two way trusas rod should ensure neck stability. The neck join is carved in a similar way to a John birch to take away the heel which isnt needed on a through neck anyway. The headstock is also shorter than a gibson so the whole guitar is about the same length
I moan about SG's quite often but i think i have taken care of a lot of the issues i have with them. Obviously the neck stability has been dealt with and i have also moved the top strap button to the back of the upper horn which should help with the balance which could have potentially been worse than a gibson because of the longer neck. As it is it seems like the blance will be spot on and it wont tilt forward the way Gibson SG's do
Its going to be finished black and the hardware is nickel - including two special P-90's with casino style covers made by Tim (currently my profile pic)

just about ready for finishing now!!
so why go on about this in a thread about tele's?
i think it shows how you can take something quite standard, that will still look relatively standard at the end... but completely customise the spec to what you want, and more specifically to something that isnt easy to find on the open market.
So obviously i would say go custom, not necissarily me as there are loads of good builders in the Uk at the moment and Jonathans name has already been mentioned - you couldnt go wrong there!!
Warmoth is also a good idea because of teh number of options they offer on relatively standard stuff like this
PS... if you do go for one of the fenders change the pickups quickly.. I had some fender black doves and whilst they didnt sound awfull they were not inspiring and the construction was the worse i had seen. Warped bobbins, very untidy windings and the wires from the coil have to travel through 5mm of open air to get to where the lead wires attach.. i am suprised i got them in a guitar without snapping them!!
-
Oh first port of call will be a phonecall to Tim to get some proper pickups in it...
Really like the look of the JEW guitar, not a fan of the finish though, to me teles look best when they are a block colour or just the boring wood grain...
Loads of options, and Wez and Feline are good ideas, just that they are bloody miles away, kinda removes myself from the custom process. I'll see, plan to get something like this by xmas-ish anyway.
And Wez, that SG is amazing. I want one. That and your TOM strat thing. Damn you.

Phils a bit further away than Glasgow!!!
and no more SG's this year.... well certainly no more than 2 more.. otherwise i will never get around to building the stuff i want to experiment with

WTF? America is further away than Glasgow? LIES!
And I doubt I'll ever get a custom geetar, right now I think a thinline or deluxe might be for me. Just need to decide if p90s will be right or just a rewind from Tim will do... Decisions!

If thon Adkins Tele comes without too much in the way of obvious signature-y features, I'm having one. In that Black finish, too.
-
Gorgeous Wez!
I LOVE your stuff =)
-
Meh I don't like the Jim Adkins tele, had a proper look and I'm not taken. Back to the drawing board. Though a '68 thinline tele is top of my list right now, mmm single coils.
-
Oh god! What a SG!
-
that SG Wez posted should come with a GAS-alert (damn you!!!). how much you knockin' something like that out for Wez?
also, I forgot about that Tele with the DeArmonds - don't discount DeArmonds, they sound really cool (I had a Harmony semi years ago with three of those babies, they were seriously nice).
-

+1! :D
The only thing I don't like is the Schaller bridge, I just find them a bit clunky. But that's a very minor detail.

I like the look of a wraparound bridge better too, but that Badass-type bridge looks cool too.

Same here. 8)
-
The SG is supposed to be more john birch than gibson - the schaller bridge is somewhere in the middle i suppose.. and its being partnered with tone pros studs to stop it tilting up as they sometimes have a habit of doing
oh and price... a damn sight cheaper than a john birch one, even one of the new ones.

It seems almost a shame to paint that 'SG' black I really like the look of the through neck on it

I'd stain that cherry for a classic SG look.
