Title: Are epiphone finally making good guitars?
Post by: apmaman on March 03, 2008, 09:41:18 PM
Well I gots an email from epiphone saying they have a new line of guitars coming out. The "prophecy" line. I went to look, and was astonished. Although they are set for the hard rock/metal scene they do come as standard with ORIGINAL Floyd Roses and real EMG set pickups(not everyone's cup of tea but hey, its a start right?)

Take a gander and discuss here.

http://www.epiphone.com/

(it opens a java window so cant link directly, although there is a big advert with a big Explorer shaped guitar there, so pretty hard to miss :p)

It would be nice to see that LP with a Floyd though...

Epiphone didn't stop making good guitars....the elitist line is very good by all accounts :)

They are certainly (IMO) very good looking guitars. How good they will be in terms of fretwork, quality of fretwire, etc remains to be seen. If they are to be sold at around the £400 mark, with all that expensive hardware, something is going to have to give - they'll have to save the money somewhere. If they are more expensive, then the quality might be very good, but they'll be less good value for money.

Prophecy guitars are just normal les pauls with extended 2 frets (I think)

EDIT: I'll rephrase. It's exciting to see a Les Paul with 24 frets, etc. and EMGs but I can hardly play a normal Les Paul let alone this one, so really it's not for me even though I wouldn't mind one.

What I really like about this new Prophecy range is the consistency of the designs - black or red, black or gold hardware, EMGs or Dirty Fingers, maple tops, 24 frets, fancy knobs.  It's a good strong image which isn't just a budget version of Gibson.

I'm not so sure about the EM-2s, they don't quite fit with the other models.  But it's good to see the M-III shape making a comeback.

I thought that Epiphones have always been rather good.

Thosed designs are nice. But I am more for the traditional stuff ... wondering what those Gibson USA Dirty Fingers Pickups are like. The name is cool for sure ...

Someone said that they're like Gibson Cold Sweat. That bloke in blink 182 had them in his signature gibson, so that should give some indication of the sounds.

These new prophecies look very nice, but I can't help thinking that they're just going after the ESP LTD market? Wouldn't they be better off making decent Gibson copies for lower prices? (it could be argued that they do that already, but I reckon that they should concentrate more on using traditional gibson woods consistently, even if they're eastern varieties. They should also change that headstock, as it's pretty much the only thing i dislike about epiphones aesthetically)

Delonge really didnt get an accurate sound from them lol.
It was exactly the same as when he used to use an invader.

And yes theyre meant to be like a cold sweat

i agree it's good to see the MIII shape back, but it hasn't got the original's novel electronics and to me it doesn't look right without a reverse headstock.  i'm still tempted by the Floyd Rose one though!!

I love the knobs on the prophecys - Are they made of rubber on the sides?
Title: Are epiphone finally making good guitars?
Post by: Philly Q on March 04, 2008, 09:31:33 AM
They do look a bit rubbery in the pics, but they look very similar to Q-Parts knobs, which are metal with pearloid or abalone tops.

I ordered a set for my Tele, but they seem to have got lost in the post.  :(

The great thing about these is that they look great, they've got a decent spec and they're CHEAP!!! You can get a Les Paul GX for £311. At that price who cares if it may need a bit of a fret dress?
I have to disagree with Indysmith, part of the reason I haven't looked at Epiphone recently has been their slavish adherence to the Gibson pattern. I'd be very interested in a cool looking Les Paul with a fast neck, and TBH these look better than any sub-£500 ESP.

Gaaah. Enough of the Epiphone Prophecy already!
Everywhere I look lately - there they are.

Anyway, I've got an SG GX on order, so I'll let you know what I think.
Thin neck, 24 frets what's not to like. Especially at the money.

I look at the price and wonder "what's wrong"... a guitar that cheap I would always be suspicious of until I've held it and played it. Plus then you don't know what's up in the body with that dodgy neck tenon and the horrid cavities/pockets in the body.

Yeah, I agree with you there, they seem substantially smaller, well enough to notice, but it is entirely fair, it is then impossible to make an epi headstock appear like a proper Gibson.
But damn, I love the real pointyness of Gibby corners

My Korean Epi LP Custom feels better to me than my Pearl MIJ, so its not like they're bad guitars to begin with. Cant say I like the look of any of those Prophecy series guitars, all very ugly and tacky imo. The only thing I dont like about Epiphone is the headstock.

I'm very very tempted by this Les Paul with the Dirty Fingers....... good lord am I!

Not sure whether to opt for one of these or a genuine Gibson - obviously though, the price of these looks great.... how close would the sounds be I wonder  :?

And also if I'm too snobby

I think the 24 frets will make quite a difference to the sound, because of the placement of the neck pickup.  Other than that, who knows?

Surely they will sound more like Gibbos (I'm after that John Sykes sound... so this could be a good contonder) due to the hardware over the standard Epiphones.

Still I don't like the headstock.

Yeah, that would be cool!

I remember they did do a run of them a few years ago but they had a terrible Epiphone designed locking tremolo made out of black tinfoil. Not exactly good shall we say.

I have played a couple of these at Thomann, the Les Paul versions.
They play just like Epiphones. Good guitars. Felt comfortable.
I jammed around on the GX, liked the Dirty Finger pickups. Hot, biting tone, didn't like the cleans though. They reminded me of the Seymour Duncan JB. Quite typical of Gibson pickups actually, I always seem to like one aspect of them but just can't live with the other.
Also played the EX, which is basically the same but with an EMG 81/85 set. Not really my thing, don't like those pickups. Still, very cool option.
Some things I did notice that were definite bonuses:
24 frets
strap locks
graphite nut
push pull knobs for coil tapping
The neck was also quite comfy. Very smooth and fast.
May look at the GX for a future buy. I envision a pair of Mules going in there! 8)

that pretty much describes my Epi Korina Explorer, but it doesn't stop it from being a really cool guitar with a fast/easy-to-play neck and a really fun guitar to play.

initial impressions:

-website looks like a trailer for some dodgy hollywood blockbuster...

- they actually look quite nice.

- those floyds don't look recessed (not a problem, just pointing out if you like vai-style up-pull)

- are those ping or schaller OFRs?

thanks for the link though, i was too lazy to look at them before, but i just about managed to click a link. :)

On the epiphone site you can enter a give-away for a Futura EX.

If I win it, you can expect a full review from me.

I am a big fan of the original Gibson Dirty Fingers.  I have a set in a 335 Studio; woody and organic when played clean and when pushed they sound like a hydrogen bomb.

This guitar was made in '89.  Supposedly the late 1970's-early '80's Dirty Fingers were even better.  By all accounts the RI Dirty Fingers are at best a pale imitation.

that pseudo-Explorer does not sit well with me for some reason... I think it, in part, has to do with that disgusting scratch plate; totally unnecessary IMO.  The shape is a little odd, though i shouldn't talk considering my self build

If it was a regular Explorer shape, it would have looked better. However, with that elongated upper bout it will probably better balanced. If it would have been a normal Explorer shape, my GAS would have gone through the roof.

I'd be happy winning it but I wouldn't buy it (just yet).

Any photoshop wizards here that can make a Prophecy Explorer EX in black cherry?

I find the Explorer a bit easier on the eyes than the Futura.

Although the Futura shape is beginning to grow on me wich, in turn, feeds my GAS.

Well, I said I would, so
Ok, this is just a first impression.
1. Looks. Do you prefer flame or quilted maple? I'm not sure - but the translucent finish and the dark cherry colour is very nice. The inlays look ok too...
2. Neck. Niiiiice. The back has a matt finish and it feels smooth and comfortable.
3. Controls. Shame about the lack of knobs, and while they look nice, I'd prefer numbers on them...
4. Sound. LOUD. I had to plug it into the other input on my amp - I haven't had much chance to try it in overdrive yet, but the clean tone is ok to good. I could certainly live with it, which, after some of the Gibson pickups I've heard was something I was worrying about. They're certainly better than the 57 Special pickups that my SG Supreme came with... Oh yes, and I haven't tried the coil tap yet (d'oh)

Recommend? Yes. Especially at the price. In some ways it's Epiphone's version of the SG Supreme (maple cap, slim neck, ebony fretboard, 24 frets...)
