Post by: Adam.M on March 07, 2008, 12:20:03 AM
Hey guys,

I've decided that google is cluttered full of too much cr@p so i'll ask you guys, what websites or forums are out there that you use and are actually any good?

I want to make a list of the decent sites out there, i know of a few such as The Gear Page forums but not much else!

Post away ;) i hope.

for modders and builders like me:

www.projectguitar.com - sometimes a bit harsh with the newbies but generally good natured

www.mimf.com - very informative with a great library you can access by signing up for free.  Some people find it a bit strict but that helps to keep it so usefull

there is also a nice little UK builders forum at - seems to be building up momentum at the moment

I was there for a while. Its dire.

There are a handfull of knowledgable folk swamped by a deluge of complete morons that think they know it all.

Mmmm, doesn't sound very appealing.  :!:

There is that forum that Dave (Irish Dave) mentioned a while ago- The Tavern or something. I joined that but never stuck around.

The tavern is an offshoot of UG. Those that were hacked off with UG went there.

Likewise, I'm registered, but never go there. Could tell you what its like.

Same as me.

Check out http://www.sevenstring.org. It's a geeky but ridiculously friendly board, that caters for a lot more than seven stringers. Some very informative stuff on there.

If you're looking to improve your technique, and generally talk shred, http://www.ibreathemusic.com has a good forum with some top-notch players giving advice. There are some really good articles as well, though they haven't been updated in years. Strictly no gear discussion, and spending too much time there will turn you into a technique hyperchondriac though...

I generally steer clear of Harmony Central, but there are a lot of guys with ridiculous rigs there, so it can be a good place to get feedback about obscure gear.

there are plenty of good guys at UG. i'd say it's definitely getting better, just the problem is it's more a site for beginners. most people who go there have a question to ask, basically.

of course, it doesn't help that a sizable minority don't know when to shut up when they don't have a notion...

but i appreciate that you guys think i know what i'm talking about... im not convinced yet!

:)

i haven't been to HC much in the last while, but from what I could see it was getting worse? seemed to be a free-for-all in the amp forum at least. I don't mind the odd off-topic post, but when 90% of the posts in the Amp forum are off-topic...

oh, rig-talk is pretty cool. www.rig-talk.com. Kind of to HC what the tavern was to UG. But it took off more, and has some manufacturers' forums (diezel, HBE). I don't check in all that often, but it's a good place.

:)

Yeah, I gave up trying to help the n00bs at UG.

I mainly got sick of the atmosphere there though: its full of nobs so its really authoritarian. The mods are little hitlers (or were last I checked)

HC is just a big slanging match. Its a laugh, but its really, really useless. Ask a legit question and you get an 80% mix of one-word posts, abuse and derailing and 20% fairly knowledgable people that arent really willing to put the time into typing any detail.

I go there for a laugh, primarily. I visit for the OT stuff.

This may be blasphemy    but the SD forum is pretty level headed and informative.

This is just for soundclips, but www.netmusicians.org is an awesome  database of loads of different amp clips. You can upload your own stuff for free as well :)

I'm not actually a member, but the Telecaster forum seems very good (if you're into Teles, obviously).

http://www.tdpri.com/

Lots of real serious tonehounds on there.

i don't think UG is as bad as it was (it's definitely not perfect, though), but agreed about HC. it's just mental. I know i was all in favour of more laissez-faire moderation on UG, but HC (the amp forum anyway) is too far the other way if you ask me... you sorta wonder why some of them are even on a guitar forum, half the time...

I see it more of a guitar and music themed internet pub environment.

Though if HC were a pub, it'd be a $%&#ing dive. You'd have a handfull of old codgers, the 20,000 post guys, sitting at the bar talking really loud, and a load of raucus regualrs, then new people would come in and they'd hurl abuse

"N00B!! Fosters?? You want the ERDINGER! Custom beer, made by belgian elves at gunpoint"

"YOU SUCK"

"You dont stand at the bar like that, you tw@t! You gotta lean like this"

And on it'd go till you learn to give it back, and then......well, then youre one of them. Firmly planted in place opposed to in-depth discussion and post counts less than 500.

HC isnt that bad. The Amp forum and Guitar Jam contain a load of off topic stuff but Electric Guitars is a good place if you want guitar advice.

Another vote for the T.D.P.R.I here.

Plenty of input about Strats, Amps, Stomp Boxes, Playing/ Technique / Bass e.t.c.

There is ( unfortunately ) a degree of 'anti-Gibson' snobbery, but it is a very busy and informative place. It is my third choice after BKP and  The Gear Page.

wholenote.com

The user forum is rather meh, but the articles and lessons are fantastic. Some class stuff in there. A good place to spend hours of "alternative practice" when you can't play guitar for awhile because you've wacked your finger with a hammer or having wrist pains from too much... uhm...yeah... you know... speed-picking.

I lurk at a few places, but the BKP forum is the only forum I still go to frequently. petrucciforums.com has some very theory-savvy people that will answer just about any question, and it's a much more friendly place than people expect from prog fans. I'm thinking of joining sevenstring.org, as I've been lurking there a few times and it seems like a nice place.

well, the forums have much better information than the user reviews, if that tells you anything.

Personally i only look at gear reviews to see if the product has excessive reliability issues, i think that's the only thing that these review sites are good for.

Right, I am going to give this thread a bump.

I haven't posted in this forum for the last few months, because after reading this thread, I strayed into UG's "the pit".

This was a bad Idea.

I have now spent hours reading moronic posts, have started saying epic in real life, and seen some horrific, horrific, shock sites.

And found it funny.

This evening, I received the best email ever.

Hello plastercaster,

We're sorry to inform you that your account has been banned by FrenchyFungus. There are two basic reasons for the bannings: you have two active warnings already, or you've significantly broke Ultimate-Guitar.Com website rules.
Exact reason for this ban:
2 warnigns

If you believe that we should take off your ban right away, please visit this forum and post as much info as possible.

This is your first banning. Please note, that this banning will have been taken off in 30 days, starting from the current date.

So, in an epiphany that surely has biblical parallels, I have realised my wrongs and shall seek sanctity in the warm bosom of the BKP forum's knowledge and friendly aura.

Do you forgive me guys?
Tomorrow, I am going to fire up my orange and do some sinner clips as penance.

Glad to be back :D

PS. On top of all the three letter acronyms and stupid memes, I learnt a single cool thing on UG.
Go start -> run -> type:
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

There. That's it. For all the mental and social ruination brought on me by this stupid sight.

Goodnight and see you in the morning.
