Now - I love Locking trems - But I hate locking nuts.
If you have a neck which is fitted with a locking nut, and you don't want to have to lock it - What options do you have?
Can I just take the clamps off and install some locking tuners?
Can I replace the locking nut with a more ingenious system?
-
well.. you can take it to a luthier to take the nut off, tinker with the shelf for a while, install a normal nut and then you either installa behind the nut lock, or a set of locking tuners
-
Locking tuners sounds like a plan.

Will Sperzels keep in tune as well as a locking nut?

Don't think machineheads could lock as well as any locking nut, if they could, there would be no locking nuts anyways.
But I could be wrong.

Not to sure, but also is it not preferable to have down pressure, as to stop strings jumping the nut slots?
irrelevant if you have string tree or the like

Which I do.

These wont work unless you shave off 1.5mm f the fingerboard as the roller is set back from the line where the nut should start
It would ruin your intonation

Any alternative suggestions? Or would taking the clamps off be fine?

Yes - take the clamps off
OR USE AN EBANOL REPLACEMENT ONE

I suggested that nut the other day. Are they any good Jon?

The ebanol floyd replacement one is possibly the simplest replacement add some locking tuners and it should be nearly as stable...
it'll be like using a wilky or very good vibrato with locking tuners just more range...
Good luck and let us know how you like the new setup schaller locking tuners should fit most normal tuning setups, however lots of people take out the sperzel pin and just tighten the nut on the top...
