Howdy guys,
looking to get a 1 or 2x12 cab for suitable bedroom volume etc - will be playing through a laney gh50l and using a jackson rr24. any ideas on a decent cab to use? needless to say i play pretty much mostly metal :P i was thinking maybe something like a marshall 1936 2x12, but with the abohrence of marshall here at the bkp forums, wondering if anyone has any decent suggestions
-
I had a Marshall 1936 with my GH50L, it was good but speakers were pretty poor.
It depends on how much you want to spend, a Framus 2x12 from Thomann would be a great option, or if you want to spend more then an Orange 2x12 would be ideal.
-
ive heard good things about the framus stuff, but, if im honest, with them and the orange, im not a big fan asthetically. especially with cabs that are wider than they are tall :/ i know thats going to be a problem if i get a 2x12, but it seems less of a problem with than others
-
stand a 2x12 on its end then, problem solved!

haha interesting solution  what about 1x12's any suggestions?
-
Orange, ENGL, even Mesa?
-
cant say im a big fan of orange stuff *awaits barrage of abuse*, but ive looked at getting an engl 1x12, is it worth the money etc? And mesa...well any opinions? i've never used any mesa/boogie stuff before so im not sure what their cabs are like
-
I have a fully enclosed, Tolex covered 1 x 12 cab with side handles and castors that I built with a Celestion G12T-75 in it. You can have it if you want to pick it up.
-
whats wrong with it bob? :P
-
Orange cabs are alot better than Engl cabs...
-
I would guess that Bob had a spare speaker laying around that doesn't have much second hand value, makes a cab?
-
Orange cabs are alot better than Engl cabs...
are they? ive not had much experience on either, but aesthitically, i cant say i like the orange cabs.

You can get a black tolex version they don't have to be orange if you don't want them to be :P

The black tolex orange cab's are the best looking cab's i've ever seen!

Can't explain how good it sounds either!
-
I've not got much experience of different cabs but based off other people's opinions for a 2x12 cab for metal I'd say something well made, closed back, with vintage 30 speakers, I'd suggest orange, engl, or bogner, (I only have experience of the engl)
-
i have to say seeing that black orange cab - it does looks suprisingly sexy. hmmm its orange or engl i suspect at this point. very hard to decide
-
I can't recommend the Orange enough. It has a very full and tight sound, which should work nicely with the bright Laney.
-
is it easy enough to get a black orange?
-
Well, any Orange dealer can order them at no extra charge, but you may have to wait a bit for them to actually make it. Mine took a little over a month to arrive.

I'd seriously have a look at Matamp cabs. About the same price as an Orange cab. Very, very nicely made, and you can choose your tolex AND speakers.
Martin at Martamp (http://www.martamp.com/) may be able to get you exactly the same cab, but slightly cheaper. It's worth a chat to him - he works at Matamp too by the way.
I have a Martamp (but made by Jeff at Matamp) rear-ported 2x12 (very similar to the THD cab). It's a very nicely made cab, and sounds great.
The beauty of a rear-ported design is that you can get the "thunk" of a closed- back cab, but in aslightly smaller, more portable package.
-
whats wrong with it bob? :P
You suspicious sod; :) There's nothing wrong with it except for the G12T-75. It's just gathering dust and taking up valuable space.
-
ooo ok - well can you wait until around the 20th for me to pick it up?

Sure, no problem. Get in touch when you're ready.

I'm thinking about getting a second 2x12 myself so I can use one cab if I'm short of space in the car or both if I'm not.
Has anyone tried the flat-pack cab from here...

Thanks for the link. I had no idea they existed. Anyone know where they are in the UK ? Those flatpack kits look very interesting, espec the 1x12 - nicely oversized. Great price too !

Let us all know what it's like when you get it. I quite fancy putting together a purple tolex covered 2x12

This 2x10 5F4 Super I did is in one of those cabs, originally supposed to be a 1x12. They're excellent, and a bargain for the price:
-
That's very cool...
-
mmm gives me an idea for my amp head *S*
-
Thanks.
Blind dovetail joints, so a bit of PVA and they're together.
Covering's another matter though!
