Following on from a couple of comments in another thread (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11831) got me wondering:
What's the oldest guitar in your collection? Who are the vintage aficionados in the BKP forum? I know Phil King is going to "win" this one, but anyone else?
My only vintage guitar is my '65 Gibson Melody Maker, just a little bit younger than me. I did have a '64 SG Special, but never really got on with it - and I managed to sell it at a loss  .

Why do you think Phil King is going to win? Or did I just sound like a silly little uneducated child?
-
Mine is my '83 JV Squier Strat. It's also the first electric guitar I bought, with my saved up paper round money. It cost £200 in the late eighties.
I don't lust after vintage gear - this is just old because I bought it a long time ago!

Those of us who've been here a while know about PhilKing's extensive and vintage guitar collection....
-
mine's 18 this year
-
Gibson LP XR1 from 81. Its vintage to me, as its older than me :P
My amp is the same age as me, and god knows how old my MXR EQ is
An old enough rig for me
-
MIJ Stratocaster...
About 21 years old, I bought it 18 years ago, second hand (I think) lent it to someone about 14 years ago and got it back at the end of 2006...
-
My oldest guitar is a 1917 Washburn Parlor guitar. In electrics it is the 1953 Les Paul conversion, followed by the 54 goldtop. The guitar I have owned longest is my Ovation, which I bought in 1974 from the Rose Morris rep when I used to work at JSG in Bingley.

Yeah. You won.

I would advise you search Phil's les pauls, Phils Strats, Phils Teles, Phils basses in the forum Guitars, Amps and FX. Its a mighty collection

i have an 1880's banjolelle if that counts!!
other than that it would be my teisco spectrum bass which is mid sixties.. and both are in the long list of things that need restoring
the bass looks like this but metallic blue and in very bad condition because i have had it since i was 16 and its been a victim of my learning curve

oh.. i forgot.. i also have a hofner thinline single cutaway body sitiing in the workshop that was never made into a guitar... when i got it it was stuffed with german newspapers all dated around 1962 the plan is to make a nice neck to fit it and give it a real rockabilly vibe.. maybe a 50's flame paint job...
-
my oldest is a 1985 Gibson Alpha model Q3000. not a brilliant guitar, and i've nearly sold it a few times, but it's sheer oddness has made me hold onto it, and every so often i take it out and play it, just in case it's magically turned into a thing of wonder while i wasn't looking
my oldest SHOULD be a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, but it's been at the repair man so long now i've decided i don't currently own it :(

Get it back!!!!

my oldest is a 1985 Gibson Alpha model Q3000.
Must admit I had to look that one up! I don't remember ever seeing one of those before. Have you got a pic of it?
-
my mum has an old acoustic she had from when she was younger. it's not very good, lol, but it's pretty old. probably late 60s i'd think.
as for decent guitars, i have an early 80s tokai goldstar strat that I got off ebay recently. I think it's around 1984 or so, so should be vintage in a year or so (if not already).
-
I have my first ever guitar-a Yamaha acoustic made in 1972. Of my electrics, I have a 76 Strat and a 77 Precision bass.
-
My oldest guitar, both in terms of age & the length of time I've had it, is my Charvel Model 5 - built in approx 1987, I've had it since 1992.

i'll get one up tomorrow. i've only ever seen mine and a black one with three p90's which i think was a Q300. mine's red with three single coils (possibly stacked humbuckers) and a Kahler.
-
My oldest is my Charvel Model 4M, made in '88- the only year they made the 4M model :)
-
oldest guitar I've owned was a '67 SG jr, great resonant guitar, but the action made it pretty much a slide guitar and the intonation was iffy too.
my oldest right now is my trusty '91 Les Paul standard that I've had since '93.
-
My oldest is still only a baby, a 1998 Fender Custom Shop Strat. My oldest bits of kit are the NOS valves in my amps, and the transistors in my Fuzz Factory.
-
We should have an "oldest that you have had from new" thread........ but then again, perhaps not.
-
Its a white 1981 Greco Flying V :) Pimped with gotoh locking tuners, CTS electrics, fender knobs and a A5/A4 mule set. Its a fine guitar.
-
Since I sold my Greco yesterday it's my 2004 Ibanez S :P
-
My 1976 Gibson S.G. Standard.
In the flesh it looks identical to Henk's 1973, except mine is a rosewood fretboard and Henks's is of course ebony.
Currently has original 'tar back' pickups fitted in case of re-sale. Otherwise it's Stormy Mondays all the way for me in this guitar.
I bought the guitar in 1978/9.
:D
-
That's a lovely old SG Derek :)
-
I have a Dean V from 1978, the second year of production for Dean guitars.
-
I've got an old acoustic called Milner. It was known as a Cello Guitar for it's similar design but it's in a right state. My Grandad bought it in the 30's second hand and gave it to me as a 3 year old to play with! I wouldn't mind having it restored but not sure if it was a good guitar in it's day or not.
I've got a 1979 25th anniversary strat.
-
My 1964 SG Standard

1973 LP deluxe- bought second hand in 1982 for £300!

Ok PhillyQ, you wanted to see the Gibson Q3000? here it is!

very interesting pics blue. 'sweet axe' as they say! :)
-
That's just weird!!!!
-
thanks Gwem, and yes Twinfan, it is weird! being a mid eighties rock axe with a whammy you'd expect a fast, slim neck, but no! chunky, rather awkward neck. i've no idea what it's made of, but it's very light which, with that rather large headstock, makes it quite neck heavy. i think the bridge and/or string clamp needs attention, as it just will not stay in tune, even with ordinary string bends never mind any kind of whammy abuse.
but, it's weirdness is the reason i still have it
-
What the hell - A gibson super strat? :D

They had some seriously weird guitars in their catalog in the 80s. I vaguely remember this one & have often wondered if anyone actually owned one - now I know!
Not surprised you have tuning problems. The Kahler string clamp always sucked IMO (though the trems were great) - I had one on a Charvel & it did become unreliable after a while. If it was a guitar of little value, or something that I played a lot, I'd be tempted to get a Schaller locking nut (like you typically see on Floyds) fitted.
-

they did try! there was the WRC, in conjunction with Wayne Charvel. it flopped. there was this Q3000 and it's variations (different pickups and bridges). they flopped. they got closer to a good guitar with the U2, but it still didn't exactly set the world alight. they finally, in my opinion, got it absolutely right with the MIII, but by then it was too late, the guitar hero was a dying breed and grunge was the big thing. if they'd built the MIII in the mid eighties instead of faffing about half heartedly for seven or eight years i think they'd have had a big hit on their hands. it did most of what a PRS 513 did fifteen years later for a fraction of the price and without the need for a security guard and an insurance policy to play the damn thing!
these days there's a new reissue Les Paul every twenty six minutes, and that seems to keep them happy. but given the resurgence in rock guitars and the revival of the MIII shape by Epiphone, maybe we will see a new Gibson version.

i was thinking of getting something done, maybe just a replacement clamp and a new nut, but i had thought of a floyd style nut. i'd just be a little afraid of major surgery.
-
I would love to have a Gibson MIII; I just looked on google and it is a gorgeous piece of guitar design.

Do you remember Gus who worked in Electrohill? He had a tasty Gibson SS.
-
i have four of them! my red standard was my first "good" guitar about fifteen years ago. the other two standards and a deluxe have come to me via e-bay over the last few years. i love those damn things

Yeah, I guess I'd be a bit leery of any major change on such an unusual guitar - it only takes Dave Grohl to be seen with one & you'll have buyers queuing up to offer you a fortune :)
Basically, it's a flawed design because with the string going over the nut, unless it's aligned very precisely, the string has to be pushed down slightly to be held by the clamp. In other words, the string wants to lift to make a straight line from nut to machinehead & has to be forced to sit at the bottom of the clamp. With time the clamp just doesn't hold it tightly enough.
Then there's also the problem of the string grabbing slightly in the nut - even though there's only ¼-½" of string between the nut & clamp.
A Floyd nut solved this as the string tension holds it flush to the surface of the shelf, so the locks only serve to prevent lateral movement.
-
My oldest (and my first guitar) is a Spanish Classical guitar. Was given it in '85.
The oldest electric I still own is an '88 Ibanez RG550 that I bought new. Was real tempted to buy one of the reissues they did recently.

Quirky and cool. :?
The Gibson Q3000? here it is!

Just how many guitars have you got, Blue? I reckon you've got me and Twinfan beat.
I like that Gibson! :D The body shape is a lot like the Victory bass, which must have been around the same time.
-
i thought i had about 20, which is quite a lot! but i just did a head count and scared the hell out of myself! 28 :o that includes a couple of basses and a traveller guitar, but still, i feel a little embarrassed by that
-

All I would think about 28 is how would I evenly display them so it would look FREAKIN' AWESOME!
-
From the 70s I think, whenever Pearl made those MIJ Les Pauls.. Whether I keep it or not remains to be seen though, because last time I played it I couldnt get it in tune but I hope thats just old strings.
-
Yep, you got me and Phil beat, blue!
I think for collection size its:
PhilKing
Blue
PhillyQ
Twinfan
I've slipped out of a medal position ;)

I'm sure there must be a few others who secretly have enormous ones. Collections that is.
(The terrible thing is, this is making me feel competitive. Thinks: Maybe if I buy a couple more....  )
-
Well! Think for that way: when I start to build that great guitars in my mind, perhaps you'll get dozen more guitars added to your list :D
Just kidding!
-
(The terrible thing is, this is making me feel competitive. Thinks: Maybe if I buy a couple more....  )
Well, I have to admit that I'm a little embarrassed by the number of guitars I own, I certainly never intended to have so many. Discovering BKP hasn't helped - I've acquired at least 3 guitars solely as vehicles for BKPs
On the other hand, BKPs have "rescued" a number of guitars that I didn't play much. Every one of my guitars is now an instrument that I enjoy playing & am glad to own.
The worst of it is that I can think of at least half a dozen more guitars that I'd buy without a second thought if space & money permitted   but at most I can imagine being willing to let 3 of my current collection go (& even that would be a wrench)
-
Blimey, my missus complains that I have 6. T'would be good to really wind her up and buy another 20 odd.
-
You could play a pretty evil prank Beatle- just commandeer the help of Antag, Phil, and Dave and their collections, and tell Mrs. 38th you've bought the entire stock of a guitar shop that was closing down...
-
Hmm, I like the cut of your jib Sam. I think, though, if I did it would be as if the Sh*t Creek branch of Paddles R Us would have run out of stock-in other words, she'd kill me or worse.
-
  Probably not worth it then...
-
If you tride to rob my colection, I'd have a pop at you as well!

Yeah, likewise, I could easily come up with a "wanted" list (although there's nothing I desperately want at the moment) but there are probably only a couple I'd sell (plus a few more which wouldn't be worth much, so they're keepers if only for financial reasons). Crazy, isn't it?

I have a guitar from the 60's an acoustic, kind of like a Gibson Dove korean clone, but it sounds absolutley amazing, I've had it for 9 years since the age of 13 and it was my first guitar so it's very special to me. I'll post a picture of it as I would love to know what make it is and model, esp the year.
