Title: I wants a delay!

But I know nothing  :?

For leads (loomis style. Not playing. Nowhere near as good. But sound of delay) and post metal, Isis, rusian circles stuff.

Ideas?

I think the guy in Russian Circles uses a Deluxe Memory Man and a DD6, but im not certain.

I recently got a Boss RE20, its amazing and i highly recommend it, but then it is the only proper delay i've ever owned.

I've been through many delays, basically had

T-REX REPLICA
Diamond Memory Lane
Danelectro Reel Echo
Lecicon MX200

and have settled on the TC Nova Delay.

Reasons:
1. Has a reasonable price of 220 EUR (agains 399 and more for some others)
2. It sounds as neutral as the Lexicon, but can handle both levels (-10 to +4 and more) plus it adjusts itself easily with a 5 second operation. Once set, it's good. So works in low level and high level loops!
3. It does the clean digital stuff and the fat analog/tape stuff equally well
4. It has great options to set the tempo (footswitch or by hitting the strings in rhythm which is REALLY cool and very easy to use.
5. It has those rhythmic modes for quarter, triplet, etc modes
6. It has a big display which shows delay time in ms or bpm

I do not recommend the T-Rex as it's a one trick pony and not very flexible for levels. Even if David Gilmour uses it.

I do recommend the Danelectro for it's really nice spheric sound, but no tap tempo, poor build quality and it sucks a bit of tone on bypass which is annoying.

The Diamond is cool but darn expensive, big and heavy ...

When i saw him live, thats what he came out and did as an opener... just seeing that double neck put my hairs on end with excitement!

He's so good live...

yeah if you wanna do the detune and go crazy stuff, an older style unit is preferred. Neither the T-Rex, nor the Danelectro, nor the TC have done this. Though my old Ibanez that died on me in 93 was unbeatable for it.

IMO, a DD-20 is almost unbeatable as a general, flexible, do-it-all delay.  The Nova Delay is a very similar unit, and of similar high quality. Both units do excellent hi-fi digital, analog and lo-fi tape delay-type sounds, as well as modulated delays and other funky things.
  The benefit of the Boss is that you can set it up to change delay settings with just one stomp. With the Nova, it is a bit more fiddly, and requires at least two stomps.
  The benefit of the Nova is that it has more programmable delay settings. With the Boss, you can have 4 saved settings plus a "manual" setting. this really gives you five delays to use. The Nova has 9 (I think), but please correct me if I'm wrong.
  Personally, I chose the DD-20 for ease of use in a live setting, and quick memory changing. You can add a cheap tap tempo switch unit, and connect it through the external switch jack, giving you one dedicated footswitch for TT, one dedicated footpedal for delay ON/OFF and one dedicated footpedal to shuttle between the manual and chosen memory settings. Hitting both footpedals together scrolls through the 4 memory settings you will have programmed. THe Nova can't touch that level of live user-friendliness. Oh, it also does both  -10 and +4dB, so is good for most loops, as well as in front of the amp.

Thanks for the advice guys, especially hunter for your breakdown of a few pedals.

Looks like its between the nova, DD3 and DD20

I know what to start looking at now, cheers.

Check out the DD-6 as well, right between the DD-3 and DD-20. I used it for years and it's a great stompbox delay.

The new Rocktron delay looks very good to me. Affordable too. I don't think I've seen tap-tempo and a selection of presets in any other >$200 pedal.

i have a dd6 and i realllly like it, though i find myself playing with the knobs more than playing my guitar.

However, you can definately just set it and start playing, and use the reverse and warp functions for reallly cool layering effects.

If i ever got rid of this delay, i'd probably go for one of those EHX stereo MM with harazrai. check out this video (2 parts)

it can do everything the dd6 can, but can remember presets and lots of rediculous stuff. Man EHX never fails to amaze me.

I have a DD-6 which I could not really complain except for the fact that it's not what I want.

It does the delay thing really but it's too modern for me. The stereo mode is great and the reverse mode even has some uses

So I'm considering for an old analogue delay to replace it with (though the Space Echo moddeler sounds quite close to what I want)

Haha, well to be fair, I did not test many of the recent higher priced alternatives, such as the Eventide, Line 6, etc. Would be nice to be able to compare them, especially the Eventide, and see if it justifies for its higher price and demand of real estate on the pedal board.

Anyone have the Eventide Time Machine who can comment?
