Title: PRS singlecut trem - amazing
Post by: PPPMAT on March 11, 2008, 11:25:13 AM
Forgive my inane ramblings but I have to tell people who 'understand'

Well I went down to PMT yesterday to extend my tonal quest for a guitar to match the vintage modern.

I was looking for a slash like tone which the VM has loads of and of course this led me onto the guitar - which would have been a les paul.

I had 4 hours of guitar heaven trying out pretty much every les paul you can think of. I summarise as follows:

Les Paul standard - too bright with the burstbuckers and VM

Les paul deluxe - you would need hands like shovels to get on with this

Les paul classic - the best of the bunch tonally - hot pickups that get a lot of a slagging generally but for high octane rock they do the job well

Les paul classic antique - tonally similar to the standrad but lower output slightly and warmer but we are talking degrees here.

Then I tried a PRS singlecut trem - I do use a trem a bit in my playing and was worried about losing the feature from the les paul but hey......what an amazing guitar - tonally in the les paul ballpark but less mids more bottom end and note clarity far far superior.

But the best bit is the feel of them - the neck is incredible - feels like my deluxe strat which has the best neck of any guitar I have ever played. Build quality excellent as you would expect.

If I'm being honest the tone of the les paul classic was closer to what I am after but I just can't really get on with the gibson neck and I end up playing around it if you know what I mean. It was a tough decision but my first ever prs is on its way to me.............!!!!!!!

Blue Matteo Satin is what I went for - I think the satin is a love it hate it kind of finish but I like it.....

I now need to sell some stuff - anyone want a 57 hot rod strat - one careful owner?

Matt

That'll be the scale length change that does that.  I find a similar thing with my Mira compared to my SGs.

I totally rocking my Mira   :guitar4:

I never thought about that - played a few Mira's - very nice alternative to the sg[/quote]

Nice choice, congratulations man. I used a Singlecut trem satin (in blue matteo, thinking about it) when I was testing an amp last month. It's a great sounding thing. Neck was a little too fat for me, but I could have got used to it, I'm sure . It certainly convinced me I must have a PRS guitar.

Most PRSs have different neck shapes for the same model so you could be reacquainted with a Singlecut trem!

I also like my PRS SE a lot through the VM. Indeed the amp is bright and you gotta be careful - so it's a wise thing you went and looked for a matching guitar.

With the right guitar/pickup/cab combination, the VM is hard to beat. Congrats to your SC Trem, I am GASing for one since I first saw them. But I am GASing for too many things.

Tell me about your VM. 100W or 50W or Combo? What cab/speakers/FX are you using?

VM and PRS =  :good:  :stupid:  :headphones5:

Well, it's very simple, whenever I play the Shiva or the Budda, and then plug into the VM, it's just more alive, more punchy, more complex, more fun, so what is not to love about it?

Takes time to dial in, but since I took back treble and dialed in some mids/bass, it's just as good as it gets.

And with the band, it's just the most amazing tone I ever had and I can even hear myself  :D

Well they both arrived this morning - pics tomorrow I'm afraid as I didn't have time to take any snaps!

The top on the prs is fantastic - its not a 10 top but way better than you would get on a stock bibson. Blue Matteo was definately the right choice as its light enough to let the grain really show through. The guitar is absolutely stunning - im gassing bad I know but still.........

I will start a new thread for the VM hunter (any excuse) :D

Dakine,

very nice!

which do you prefer the singlecut trem or the 245?

PPPMAT also very nice, unusal top but very very nice. Tight grain. almost like a modern eagle style in colour. lucky guy. where did you get it from?

245 NO contest.
Prefer the scale, layout etc. Although love the neck on the SCT.

I will get some better shots done - that one doesn't do it justice at all. It is a one piece flame top yes - i never thought about it being unusual as every PRS i see seems to be quite different but unique in their own way.

I bought it from Andertons - they were cheapest by far and their service is excellent if anything goes wrong  :D

I will sell my 57 hot rod (reluctantly) if anyone is genuinely interested PM me and i'l send some photos

Cheers

matt

You bought it from Andertons? If it was the one they had on the shop floor, it's the one I played to demo an amp with. It was so nice I nearly said, 'sod the amp, I'm buying this'. But I had an attack of something I believe is known as 'financial restraint'. It's not something I'm that familiar with.

Either way, it's such a sweet guitar. That single piece top is a work of natural art.
