Following on form the recent 'Edwards guitars appreciation thread' here,
http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11766, I now have a serious case of GAS for an Edwards Les Paul.
I did a bit of research following on from that accursed thread  and found that Edwards are highly regarded and considered by many to be on a par with Gibsons.
So ... now I'm stuck with a recurring GAS for a black Edwards LP, like this;
In my minds eye I have a set of Rebel Yells (black with gold screws) already in it.
Someone help me out here and tell me that Edwards guitars are actually rubbish, or my GAS will overcome my wallet .. again :D
-
Just think of the rumour of a certain % of the guitar coming from China, and imagine the most awful Chinese guitar you can! (or was it Korea)
C'mon.. what about the lemon drop nitro standard they do, now that is pretty :P
A comment from Wez the other day referring to ebony fretboards being stained black as they are not high quality should be something to take into account too I guess
-
/em comicbookguyvoice
... Not .. working ... (gasp)

nah, the stain is great stuff... even PRS and gibson use it
personally i have a botle standing by just incase, but in most cases i prefer wood to look like wood

Noooo Wez that's anti-anti-gas! Wrong direction!

yeah i know... not my job to cure GAS is it

Bingo! That's the right mindset right there. Not your job to cure GAS. It's not anyones job to cure GAS!
Woop.
I'm slightly hyper for some reason. Apologies.
-
thats a well tasty paul machinehead... mmm, would be great with a set of rebel yells.

i tried alot of edwards guitars when i was in tokyo, and they're fine. wouldn't go so far as to say they're all gibson quality - but i'm sure the high end ones are better than gibson
-
ooo shiny
-
I did a bit of research following on from that accursed thread  and found that Edwards are highly regarded and considered by many to be on a par with Gibsons.
They're not (on average) as good as a really good Gibson, but the key is value for money - and for the money (even including VAT, import duty etc) they're ridiculously good.
And they seem to have access to really lightweight mahogany (or far eastern equivalent) so if, like me, you find the average Gibson LP a bit porky, they're a godsend.

My GAS is still a rampantly raging unbridled Stallion of Lust... :D
I need to hear more negatives
-
^ ...
I heard Edwards were all pieces of shitee!
Is that okay?

Getting there :D

Stick a poll up. But we all know you should get one. :D

I think it would be a very one sided poll :D

My GAS is still a rampantly raging unbridled Stallion of Lust... :D

OK, here are a few proper negatives:
1. The finishes aren't nitro (unless you go for the more pricey models)
2. The figured maple tops are just veneers over plain maple
3. The pots and switches always need replacing
4. They (probably) won't appreciate in value as they have the "wrong" name on the headstock
....that's about it.

1. I can live with that. I'm very careful with my guitars. They're either round my neck on a good stand or in their case.
2. I can live with that as well. I'm eyeing up an ebony one and tbh even if it was a figured top, it would make no difference to me. Tonally it would be the same?
3. I would get that done when I put it into my tech for the Rebel Yells.
4. I probably won't be around when my Gibson starts to go up in value, so that's not going to bother me.
Oh wait ... no more negatives ... damnit :D
Cheers Philly

In my experience the next best solution to negatives is alternatives. More alternatives means more decisions to make, and ultimately prevents you from actually purchasing anything (in the short-term at least)! :D
So:
Alternative number 1-
Get a Signature instead. 8) 8)
-
just do it.
Nike
-
Yeah Indy is right-life is too short.Always room for another guitar.I am sorry if this does not help btw.

That's an interesting concept there.
I'm about to have (I hope) some spare cash. I recently bought a Patrick Eggle Berlin and as nice as it is - it isn't really suiting me for size. It plays great and sounds excellent but I'm just too big for it now ....
It's going on ebay shortly - which will leave me needing a backup for my Gibson LP - for live work.
All joking aside I can't really afford to wait too long after I sell the Eggle. Gigging with one guitar is just fraught with danger :o
-
^Well if you can FIND a Signature, they're usually around the £300-400 mark, so probably noticeably cheaper than an imported Edwards (and you'll get it quicker too I suppose).
-
Hmmmm
Looking for a Sig now ... brb :D
-
:D Good luck finding one!
The nature of the word 'signature' when it comes to guitars, and their rarity, means it can be a total pain in the arse finding one.
Music Ground in Leeds still has one for sale but for £499. It's been there for YONKS though so might be able to haggle them down.
Happy hunting! :)
-
I've just drawn a blank on Signature guitars.
What am I looking for?
-

Urmm...
Well....
what do you mean?
-
Aaaaahhhh.
I see now :D

  !!!!
Do you? Have I missed something?

I was looking on Google and ebay and ... zip. Nothing.
I assumed it was their relative rarity that was the reason they were suggested.
A GAS stopper
-
Indeed- it's a double-whammy of GAS-stopppage; gives you an alternative to think about, and will take you yonks to find one! :D
The one in the Music Ground shop is also actually on ebay.
Search 'Signature LP', and you should get it.
-
what with the pound devaluing due to the credit crunch etc., they aren't as good value as they used to be.
how's that?
-
^Indeed. That's another score for the Signature- they're in the UK! 8)
-
Umm...not sure if this is helping with the Gas at all

Woooo! nice find!
:)
-

yeah. i'd be wary with the current fiscal climate to be honest... there's nothing to say the pound won't drop further, and often there can be a wait of several weeks, if not months, with those edwardses.
Don't get me wrong, mine's great, but I'm glad i got mine before the pound devalued... i'd be a bit scared to order one now to be honest. I am ultra-cautious, though, I must add. But at least you don't often get caught out that way. :)
-

I think this is probably the only context in which the term "ultra-cautious" could be described as an understatement.

Nice find Kev.
Ok ... So are Signature LP's a better guitar than Edwards LP's?
-
I can't say as I've never played an Edwards.
Ask Twinfan- he has/had an Edwards Jimmy Page relic I believe, and also a Signature LP.
Dakine also had a Signature... not sure if he's played an Edwards though.
EDIT: The one certain factor however, is that the Sig's tend to be noticeably cheaper, and are in the country (not an issue if you can find an Edwards in the UK I suppose). Two definite advantages.
-
I have an Edwards 98LTS and a Tokai 85F both of which I bought after a lengthy and ultimately failed search for a really nice Gibson Les Paul standard. Both of these guitars I've found to be as good as any Gibson LP STD I tried, and at less than half the price, although I have to say that I found that I needed to replace the seymour duncan pickups that came with the Eddie. I also buffed it up to a gloss finish, fiited a faber tonelock tail stop, and replaced the pots with an RS Guitarworks set and orange drop caps. It really is a very fine guitar indeed now and I cannot imagine that anyone would regret ever buying one.
I now have a Gibson 1959 Historic reissue and this really is the guitar that I've always wanted a Les Paul to be (although I changed the pots and caps and pickups and fitted a tonelock tail stop on this too) so now my Eddie and Tokai are sadly soon to be up for sale to help fund the purchase of a Fargen mini plex.
Many Regards

I'm really interested in finding one of these. But all I find are artists signatures.

I've had an ebay search on signatures LP's running for quite a few months now, and this is the first I have seen in the last 2 or 3 I would say, so getting a Signature is not easy...which means they may have better investment potential.
My Edwards is fantastic, and really excellent value for money, I would not have been surprised if it was double the price, and being new, I could choose exactly the model I wanted, which was a key element for me (and it will only be infused with my bad influence :) )
My 5 pence worth - if you saw a Signature you liked the look of you won't go far wrong from what's been said on this board...but if that GAS is eating you up then I would wholeheartedly recommend an Edwards.

true, but then again the federal reserve didn't just cut the interest rate by a whopping three quarters of a point because of people like me.

I think it's an awesome guitar overall. VERY well built, sturdy and heavy as hell (in a good way). The satin nitro finish looks and feels really nice.
Definitely the best value for money out there in my opinion. The only thing I really don't like about it are the "historically correct" knobs which will be replaced with some black speed knobs soon.
And of course the JB/'59 has already been taken out and I'm waiting for a set from everyone's favourite pickup maker...
Upgrade to some CTS pots and better caps will probably happen too but it's a great guitar stock.
-
^ that's very nice :)

The other being the one I posted before...
How's that GAS holding up?! :)

Ohh that one looks like the same colour as mine. Nice.
Nice Edwards, Hansi, as well!

Man you got it bad!
So have I my GAS levels are reaching the new precedent of, 'Testarossa Bullissimo Rampaging Tone Guerrilla' with raw steroids seeping from its adrenal glands!
Get one or you won't function properly!
-
I haven't functioned properly for years :D
-
according to xe.com (and you probably won't get as good rates with your credit card), £1 will only buy you 198 yen now. To compare, when I bought mine about 4 months ago, it bought you 238-240.

There are plenty on eBay though, selling in $ - and it's still nearly $2 to £1 (although I must admit, some of the Japanese sellers have raised their $ prices a bit in the last couple of months).
-
i just brought something in dollars... pounds dropped a bit there too :(

I may have a cure for my GAS, but not what I thought it would be ....

Am I missing something?

Jeez ....
It looks like a BIG dog has had a go at it :o
-
what a gimp.
"guitar has been scratched to give that "aged" look - a one off"
his cat blatently got at it
(http://i18.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/e6/12/bb5c_1.JPG)
-
Damn that would look GORGEOUS without the silly scratching :(
If it stays VERY cheap, then I will buy it though.
I can't imagine anyone bidding over £100 for a les paul copy that virtually no one has heard of, that some twit has taken a compass to. So might be able to snag a bargain! Even more than the last one at £275! :D
-
"guitar has been scratched to give that "aged" look", my arse :? . You'd have to whack the hell out of it to take those huge chips off the side. I reckon that's had some kind of accident (which also shattered all the knobs, presumably). And I'm wondering if the neck joint's intact....

Didn't you decide you don't need two LP style guitars, Sam?
-
There's another one for £499 and the dinged one is still there. Hmm..
I wish...
-
Sambo
I reckon that you did such a good job of talking up the last one that you might have a few 'competitors' from the BKP forum after it!!
Mike
PS - any idea how much a refinish costs?
:-)
-
Didn't you decide you don't need two LP style guitars, Sam?

About that....
I've recently decided that whatever I decide, won't be my actual decision at the time that the decision is put into practice.
Mike-
Yeah I was wondering about a re-finish cost as well! Ship it off to Feline to get some one-off paint-job done on it to get a real oddball LP copy was my line of thinking. 8)
Although just reading the part of Phil's comment about the neck joint has put some doubts in my head... :(
-
I've recently decided that whatever I decide, won't be my actual decision at the time that the decision is put into practice.
The ultimate escape clause!
Although just reading the part of Phil's comment about the neck joint has put some doubts in my head... :(
Yeah, and I was being serious... in fact if you look at the sideways-on pic there's something visible along the neck-to-body join. It might just be dirt...
(Edit: I just noticed "The back of the guitar still has the stickers on....". Good to know the finish is being protected! )
-
Well he got just over £200 for it!!
-
not just the cost of a refinish either - the binding and purfling looks to be actually missing and that would all need redoing on at least the upper half of the guitar to get it looking new. probably gonna be at least £300 done properly.
-
I'll probably regret this one day, but is anyone interested in buying my Signature Les Paul? I don't need three LPs and I could do with the cash towards another PRS........

Oh, the GAS is strong in this one... the twitching fingers, the bloodshot eyes... the slender bank balance...
(Don't think we've seen that picture before, have we Dave?)
-
-
Hang on - I've got £1.57 in my pocket - that do you?
Mike
-
That white Signature is back on eBay again..... perhaps someone worked out how much a refinish would actually cost!!

Don't do it!!!
:o
If I wasn't about to order an amp (TONIGHT! YES!) I would buy it right now!
And the white one is back on ebay?! Ha.
-
Well I PM'd HTH earlier about his Black Dog for sale - I may use the Sig as a pickup testing station ;)
Get that Plexi ordered Sam!
-
NOOO I PM'd HTH about the Black Dog too!
Dad just got in from work- Plexi ordering here we come! :D
-
Nice one Sam :)
Maybe I'll take his Emeralds instead then ;)
-
Yeah you can take them... that's fine.
-
Looks like I got in first for the Black Dog. Sorry Sam :(
-
No worries! :) It's probably a good thing really as I shouldn't be spending money when I've got to still pay for the amp
EDIT:
WHICH HAS NOW BEEN OFFICIALLY ORDERED! Get in.
