Yup... another n00b here trying to find the Bare Knuckles that suit me and my Edwards LPC best. :) I currenly have the stock JB/'59 set in it and I'm not that satisfied with the JB in the bridge because its low end is somehow way too flabby for my tastes and the highs might be a tad smoother.
I already bothered Tim by asking him advice on what might fit the style of metal tone that I'm looking for which is mainly the trademark rhythm tone Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer. Sure enough he recommended me that I try the Black Dog or Riff Raff humbuckers because those are the ones that Jon also loved and I really am leaning heavily towards getting a calibrated set of Black Dogs. My only concern is that (as I'm not JUST a blind Iced Earth fanboy) whether they can also do different stuff like Edguy, Evergrey or even Opeth...? I also love the kind of tone that Magnus Karlsson has on the Russell Allen/Jorn Lande albums (A few songs here (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=299700714). Do check them out anyways people, they're AWESOME!)
Now Tim did already assure me that they dirty up really well despite having a bit lower input but I wonder if I'll need more power to achieve that than just the Hughes & Kettner zenTera modeling amp that I'm currently using...
Damn this turned out to be a LONG post but anyways... Black Dog users, do they work for heavier stuff too and what would you BKP veterans choose in my shoes for the stuff I'm looking for? :D

the Black Dog has quite a dark low-mid tone and does heavier stuff really well - I've got one in my Explorer at the minute (replacing a Nailbomb temporarily) and it sounds pretty cool.

No one knows the pickups better than Tim, and you can always bother him more
Oh yeah the Allen/lande albums really are awesome.

I have an ESP LTD EC-1000 with came stock with JB/59 set, i changed them to a calibrated set of Black Dogs and it sounds great, growly pickups with plenty of power!

^ That's nice to hear... So there wasn't that big of a drop in output between the JB and Black Dog?
I'm seriously thinking about pulling the trigger and ordering a gold covered set of Black Dogs today :D
-
No not really, if there was it wasn't drastic and i didn't notice it, in fact i was surprised at how powerful the Black Dogs were when i first put them in.

notice the Rebel Yells in Schaffer's les paul :D
great substitute for the JB without losing power
if you want more output, then holy diver or nailbomb (both similar to the rebel yell too)

notice the Rebel Yells in Schaffer's les paul :D
Are they definitely RYs, and not just another model with purple bobbins? (I'm not arguing, just don't know either way)

Well I had to pull the trigger so I can see for myself what this praise about the BKPs is all about... Just ordered a calibrated set of Black Dogs 8)

Nice, i'm sure you won't be dissapointed :D
