Title: New track - Nailbomb on my ESP MII...
Post by: withoutwarning on August 29, 2005, 02:53:26 PM
Hey everybody...

I'm always tempted to say "it's Dr. Nick Riviera here!" after that! OK, I'll behave myself...

I managed to record a track thsi weekend with the Nailbomb on my ESP MII...the tone of the MII seems to suit the Nailbomb better then my Gajic. The tone is nice and thick, screaming harmonics, great overdrive, etc...I'm not altogether happy with the solo so have only included half of the track. I'll re-record the whole solo and post it at a later date...

This one's a pretty bluesy track (hence the name "Nail That Blues"). The rhythm gtrs are all layered up (6 rhythm gtrs in all so I'll give you a breakdown of what you're hearing...

Gtr 1 and 2 panned left and right about 90% using the Nailbomb bridge pickup though my Soldano Supercharger pedal only.

Gtr 3 and 4 panned left and right about 80% using the SD Cool Rails neck pickup (haven't gotten around to putting the Trilogy in my MII - my bad :O) through just my Digitech Bad Monkey pedal (warm blues tone)

Gtr 5 and 6 panned hard left and right, just the chord playing over the chorus…the left channel is the neck PU through the Bad Monkey with the gtr volume rolled off about 25%. The right channel is the same setup except I’m using the bridge PU…

The solo is all Nailbomb with the Soldano and Digitech pedal boosting the Soldano…

Everything is DI'ed into my computer via my POD 2.0...

I've included a short clip of just the rhythm section as well...zero effects on the rhythm gtrs. The recording was pretty dry with just a touch of reverb. The rest of the verb came from the mastering reverb...the solo was a one take (hence the mistakes and repetition...) with the delay turned on and nothing added later...minimal EQ'ing...just a touch here and there to eliminate conflicting freqs...

The Nailbomb rocks!!! :)

Enjoy...

Ooohh! Call it shred blues. Sounds great!

Very nice of you to think about us rhythm guitarists as well.

Hey Bird,

Thanks...I used Groove Agent to do the drums for this one...makes it so much easier to lay down drums...don't know what I'd do without it!

HJM...

The NB is a VERY angy pickup! The great thing about the NB is that it custs through everything so easily...I had a bit of trouble mixing this track as the lead gtr was overpowering the rhythm at times but a little bit os a boost to the hi freqs fixed that.

Good name for the track! LOL...I did go a bit berserk with those pinch harmonics!! Hehe...couldn't help it...the NB just asks to be abused ;)

I always think that rhythm gtrs are just as important as any lead gtrs...much more so in the contect of songs...I like playing and putting together rhythms just as much, if not more, then playing lead because you can layer all sorts of sounds, etc... :)

 I guess you're right! I was going for a bluesy feel with the rhythm gtrs...but the lead gtrs, you're right, my knowledge of blues is very Lynchified ;) A lot of it is pentatonic scale if that's any help!!!

Jay, another example of your killer lead chops!

To my ears, the rhythm track sounds a bit too chalky, tho; no real definition and the guitars seem like they're paper thin.

More kits (including a metal kit...bit OTT but fun), some heavier kit parts too -  old ones still there also. I think the upgrade is about £60 from Arbiter.

Thanks for the feedback Ben...much appreciated. For the rhythm gtrs I backed off on the gain because I didn't want max definition. I tried recording that way but it just didn't seem to work...the gtrs sounded really lush through my monitors though, but I'll go back and check that...any tips as to how the sound can be improved? Any pointers would be of help bro :)

Thanks for the heads up HJM...I'll check out the upgrade asap...£60 is a snip for upgrading the software...

I'd say a lot of it has to do with being sqaushed down to a 1.5 meg mp3 file. You're going to lose a lot no matter what, mp3s aren't much good as a measure of quality.

That is very true, Bird. Could very well be some aliasing from the compression.

BTW, did you get the envelope I mailed to you??

Haven't received it yet, but the mail can be a little slow crossing the border. I'm sure it'll get here sometime this week.

Have you had any problems with it dropping out. It seems to be a fairly common complaint with GA.

I've had that happen to me a few times, but what I tend to do is to use the Midi Export function to export the drum pattern to a midi channel and then assign the midi output as Groove Agent (disabling Groove Agent as the input source). That was I have the same drum pattern to work from and it eliminates the drop out issue...

It seems to come up on the forums quite a bit. And apparently Steinberg hasn't fixed it, at least not according to what I've read.

Guess I've been lucky this time!!!

I've just got Drumkit From Hell Superior.....you've got to program the parts yourself but the sound is out of this world! :!:  :P

I'm looking at BFD by FXpansions right now. Looks like a pretty good package.

I dunno man it sounded pretty sick in the Gajic but these sound equally good.... anyway you have inspired me to get a Nailbomb in the bridge of my ESP Custom Mirage.... or most likely, I'm still waiting for the Painkiller to arrive before I make my decision but I think you changed my overall vision of this guitar from being a screamer with a loud ceramic to having some balls and a balanced tone instead.
