Title: Newbie Question - Mule v PG Blues
Post by: ToonLP on March 21, 2008, 07:52:22 PM
I have a Les Paul 58 VOS and am thinking of a pickup upgrade. Can't decide between Mule and PG Blues - looking for that classic blues/rock tone (think Beano album with a '59).

Would also want to stray into classic rock territory (AC/DC, Thin Lizzy etc).

Advice welcomed.

Also - potted or un-potted?

I love the PG Blues for the old classic Les Paul sound.  They come unpotted and I don't think you have a choice on them.  I also Like the mules, but they are a bit fatter tone.  I am just putting an AV Mule/AIV Stormy Monday into a Zemaitis Pearlfront Clone, which will perhaps give  the sounds you want.  The neck will have the slightly thinner blues tones and the bridge will have the fatter push.

first thing that popped into my head when i heard the beano album stuff was, stormy monday. With the thin lizzy stuff it depends quite alot on the which player/songs you were thinking of to be honest, but the stormy monday (potted) should do the trick for the main part. And it will cover ACDC without any problems aswell

The PG's are much sweeter than a Bluesbreakers tone, but they are very versatile and I have found that I get whatever tone I want with them if I take time to eq the amp. PG's are amazing, I'm now a big convert to alnico II's as a result. I doubt that any BKP's in the "vintage" range will disappoint, the attention to detail is phenomenal.
