Hello all. As mentioned in previous posts I now have my '57 reissue strat loaded with Apaches. They sound sooo nice that I don't even touch my early/mid seventies tele any more. It just sounds lifeless and unexpressive compared to the strat (a few weeks ago it was the strat that sounded lifeless compared to the tele :) ).
The options I have for the tele are as follows:
Sell it and use the cash for GAS
Get a set of BKPs installed
Get the pickups rewound by Tim/BKP people
I need a bit of help on what rewinds would do for the guitar. I have never had this done before so would appreciate some insight in to what rewinding a set old pickups does.
Really hope one of my fellow forum members can give me some good pointers - I love my tele and don't want to get rid of it or not use it anymore!!
-
Personally, I'd go for new pickups.
-
New pickups. Everyone needs a Telecaster in their household.
-
Only one real question here.
Even with new or rewound pickups, will you continue to use your Tele? If the answer is yes, then do what is needed to get it back in your good books.
-
Or two... I'm actually planning my third tele purchase. Other guitars feel puny in my hands, MEN play teles.

Perhaps ... But REAL MEN play LP's :D

Pah, short scale neck and pussy 'easy' humbuckers. Get a 25.5" neck and some heavy strings and single coils. REAL men dig deep for tone.
Anyway, think the rewinding is a cheaper option, you get to choose the specs too. Best bet is to phone Tim and see what he recommends.

I'd only get a Tele with a Humbucker in the bridge.
Don't know where I can find one though, don't want a H-H Tele.

Oh yes. The tele will be back in my good books one day . I will probably go for new pickups, wiring etc and keep the original stuff intact and safely locked away in the case.

Voila (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v148/unsubtle57/?action=view¤t=30082007.jpg) not that good a picture, but you get the idea. Country Boy pickups and a 4 way switch, tone to die for. I love it.

Cool. Never tried a tele with the 4 way switching - is it a good idea? I may well be going for some BKP tele pickups in the future and assume that Tim can take care of the switching if I ask nicely?

All of a sudden i really like telecasters...
Oh god, not GAS again, PLEASE!!!! :(

Didn't you have to route that though?

I have parents, so really there is no cure for my GAS. :P

I routed it myself with a hand drill and a chisel. Felt like the manliest man ever doing so. Results are totally worth it, rocks harder than a fat strat due to the larger mass of wood. Also the new MIM teles have a humbucker route at the neck, something i noticed AFTER getting my blank pickguard...
As for the 4way switch, it gives a nice fat tone with a hike in volume. Mention it to Tim and he will add the extra grounding cable you need.

Most definitely go for a 4 way switch-gives you the standard tones plus the extra series option.

+1 on that.
I was sceptical everytime 38thBeatle said this until I got a Baja Tele a few weeks back. I don't tend to use the extra position a lot yet, but it's definitely worth having it there, and it is a very usable sound.
The two worries that I had are not issues AT ALL (is there a big volume jump? - no. Will I accidentally switch to it instead of the neck? - no).
-
Teles rule - save the original pickups and get some BKPs, you'll be glad you did when the 70s Tele prices start going through the roof.
