Heya there guys im a complete noob to these forums. Hope i got the right section. Anyway ill get to the point.
At the moment i own a epiphone iommi SG, which i find to be a pretty decent guitar, but i am starting to crave something with a double locking trem now, and something more versatile. So being a lefty i am pretty limited for choice. But i did find an ibanez rg1570L which seems to be a pretty decent guitar. Everyone on harmony central is saying it plays like a Jem 777 but the pups are pretty pants. So i have just emailed Tim asking about pups so forget that for this moment in time and just give me feedback on the guitar. Anyone had any experiance with this guitar? And whats the edge pro trem system like. And anyone got any other high end lefty guitars they know of? Because i also emailed legra custom guitars and with the specs i gave them its aroundd £1700 which is outa my price range. Would have to work solidly for 1 year on almost £40 a week. Which for a 15 year old is insane!. But if i got this RG and put some BKPs in i believe it would be just short of a flawless guitar. Anyway gimi some of your oppinions. Cheers!

For you i would say get the Ibanez and change the pickups, nobody needs a custom at 15 years old for 2 reasons that i can think of really:
1) It is ludacris to spend that much when you're 15
2) You are at an age where you don't really know exactly what you like yet, also you can easily grow out of it at this point of your life because you will get bigger etc. and could regret it in later life when you realise you have a custom guitar with the wrong specs.
Ibanez are very versatile you can get pretty much any tone you want with some good pickups and h-s-h setup. I would definatley go try them first though because it will be a lot different to you're Epiphone.
Also i'm sure more people will chime in with a variation of left hand locking trem models, there's way more than just this Ibanez i would have thought.
-
LOL, how many guitars did you impulse buy when you were 15/16?
-
0 at 15 and 1 when i was 16 which wasn't anywhere near 1700...
-
It seemed like more

And they're very easy to sell, if you regret it someday (at least here in my country  )
-
If you've played Epiphones I would NEVER recommend an Ibanez to someone without doubts...
They are VERY different the guitar you are used to - Super thin necks - if you want Japanese I would aim for ESP - Much more friendly necks to those who learned with a little more chunk.
-
We are selling this off for £795 and it already has Bare Knuckles in (nailbombs and a Slowhand middle single coil)
I know its a non trem model , but that does allow for detuning and rock solid tuning too.
Price doesn't include a case but we can sort one out at cost if need be

Indeed, I think I remember reading that Tom Morello had a custom guitar made for him when he was young and he hasn't stopped changing it since.

just one piece of advice - make sure you get an Original Floyd Rose rather than a cheap licensed one, or it will be a throughly depressing experience.
trems are fun, it can be nice to have one in your selection.
-
In my opinion, that is an obscene amount of money for a 15 year old to drop on a guitar.
-
Varkunus....pull the trigger on that Feline guitar.....it looks very Nice!!. I'll bet it sounds awesome too...
-
Yeah, out of the two - I'd sooner spend half the money and get, by all accounts, twice the guitar from what Feline owners here say.
-
Custom all the way!! I have 2 and they are so awesome. It's nice knowing that when you pull your axe out that no one else has them. You will have a life long guitar then pretty much.
Go for the Feline if you can't afford to save up for the Legra or what have you. That feline will sound really good.

This would be absolutely BRILLIANT. If you're certain you want a trem though, then I still say look at things like the LTD MH-1000 which is an absolutely great guitar.

Hey I was looking for a lefty trem equipped guitar myself and really my two choices for a nice playing guitar (I don't trust purchasing a random stocked guitar from an e-tailer too many awful stories I've read) was to buy a RG1570L from Rich Harris @ Ibanez Rules...
http://www.ibanezrules.com/new/rg1570l.htm
..or go custom.
I went for a Legra JEM Lefty with mirror top which was about £1500 incl. case+del. mainly because of the BKP option which I could not get from Rich among others
Cheers & Good luck.

i would just like to say thanks alot for the speedy replies guys! And woogie i know you off MSN :P hey there. And to that feline i would like it but in this new guitar i am really seeking to have a trem. So i will have to turn you down im afraid. And just to put this in perspective guys this customs legra im talking about is really pushing the boundaries. Mean i would be in part time work for over a year. And even with the RG to get it equiped with BKs i would be working although summer holidays, plus more. So this is a lot of money for me. And the only reason i would see the need to go custom was if the RG would be significantly worse.
Now i know that the epi and ibanez necks are miles apart. But i actually find it easier to bend on my old squires 25.5 scale length than my epis 24.75. Thats why i though the ibanez would be good. Also i am hearing lots of good things about the wizard necks and why is it all the shredders use em? So i assume they must be quick.
Also just a further question... With a floyd rose style tremelo (in this case an edge pro, feedback on this please) Can you have the action redicously low and still be able to pull it up? Or do the strings just catch? Because my mate who is a bit of a ponce has his gibbo les paul action redicously low! Like less than 1mm at 12 fret. And on my epi i can get it pretty low but i am finding there are a few dud frets. Only 1 or 2, but this stops me putting the action any lower. So with the ibanez are all the frets really even?
Anyway guys thanks again keep the posts coming
Also ill have to mention im pretty established in what music i like, Ive been playing 4 years. And what would you say on the front of the BKPs? I sent an email to tim so i guess i will wait for his response
-
Any pictures?!
I will have come mid-June! 8)
Actually Bob promised me some pics soon so I might make a thread and post them up.
Nailbomb - IT - NB + Push button kill switch also.
Varkunus I'd just like to say I considered Rich as I have no pro near me to do a guitar setup etc.
Where you would be able to turn a decent RG into a great player if you're nearby Legra, Feline, Wez etc.
-
nothing is better than JJ Guitars, they sound much better than any PRS, as the body is almost 2x thicker, they look a bit ugly but the sound is the best I have ever heard!

and what about pups
-
and what about pups
oh yeah and fit it with BKP's of coarse! esp mules + BKP90s. I know it's off the subject but a real Fender Jaguar is only £600 and a Mustang is only £400! they look pretty decent too, I saw it today in Dawsons, yet another option to consider for you, and not too expensive.
-
tim said painkillers in neck and irish tour middle and cold sweat neck. Im pretty sure of them all just the bridge. I basically want a really big almost mesa type sound. Like big and drivey like black sabbath, but also needs to be able to do anything up megadeth and anything down to t-rex
-
tim said painkillers in neck and irish tour middle and cold sweat neck.
Crazy, how are ya fitting two neck pickups in at once :P
Anyway, sounds like it would be a good combo
-
sorry typo lol. Anyway I am still having problems with the bridge i want a really drivey tone but still bit good clairty and decent amount of bass. Im considering painkiller on tims recommendation, the holy grail. the war pig, the miricle man etc. Could you guys steer in the right directions and tell me how these vary in sound. BTW i have checked the sound samples
-
also guys on my epi which has 24 frets. Sometimes the frets seem a little small, not by much but sometimes enough. But i assume on the ibanez with longer scale length and jumbo frets this problem will be easily solved.
And also im thinking of trying to save up for a single recto. Anyone got feedback on that? Or maybe a VHT. I have major gas but think a new guitar will go down better with parents + its cheaper. And im really seeking a trem
-
There is almost certainly no way that you should get a custom guitar yet. You'll know when the time is right to get one. For now, get a decent "branded" guitar. Other users here have mentioned the Ibanez vs ESP vs... points about neck styles. The only thing I would add to that is that you should get down to a guitar shop and try out as many different types of guitar as possible (in a wide range!). Make a point of saying to the staff in the shop that you're in the market for a new guitar, but that the purpose of your visit that day is to see what styles suit you and what styles don't.
I did this very recently, making the point that the purpose of this particular visit to the shop was to try out guitars to find out what I wanted (the inference very strongly was that I wasn't going to buy that day, though I didn't actually say that!).
Most shops are okay with this - if they treat you well, hopefully you'll buy from them when you're ready to get it!
The up-shot: don't drop loads of money on a guitar now! You will still be able to get a custom/expensive guitar later, and you'll appreciate it more!

its just im finding my squire affinity strat easier to bend on than my epi. And even though the action is higher its easier to press down on the frets. I think its scale length. Also I am lefty so which models are similar. And i live on the Isle of Wight, and theres only two shops here, none stock ibanez. So ill have to go to the mainland, but each time i do that the ferry is over £40 sometimes £80
-

Would you say Gotoh is a bad licensed FR? That's what i have on mine, and i am thinking of swapping it out. What do you think?
(sorry to hijack the topic)

The floyd on my Maverick is a custom run Gotoh. I barely have to tune. Ever.
I'd say that bodes well for their quality.
Are you sure it's set up correctly?
-
wouldn't describe the gotoh one as 'cheap'...
-
has the ibanez got a 5 peice or 3 peice wizzard neck im reading different facts on the net. And how well will the edge pro stay in tune
-
Guys dont let this thread die please, well not yet anyway. Could someone clarify about the neck, and how well does the edge pro stay in tune
-
I would deffinatly say dont go custom. Ibanez seem to make really great guitars around that price and you can always mod it if there something you dont like and still be saving money over a custom.
i thought i wanted to go custom but i got a peavey v-type. Its far from a great guitar but a few mods and it plays nice, sounds sweet(miracle men set) and i am always pleased to go home and play it everyday.
I have a miracle man and those bands you said seem to match up pretty well to there sound, they have alot of punch and attack and tons of clarity, and they have really good bass that is really responsive to your playing.
I think the low pro is probably really good, my peaveys "liscensed floyd rose" was IMO quite bad, but after a while i learnt to set it up low action good intonation and the tuning doesnt go out.
It takes perseverance but i dont think floyds are that bad even the cheap shoddy ones.
-
well tim recommended alinco V warpig in bridge, irish tour middle and cold sweat in neck. Would you guys agree, i mean i know tims the man, but whats your feedback on the pickups?
-
I speak for myself, but I'm also fairly sure that others will agree with this:
If that's what Tim says, then that's almost certainly the very best setup for you, based on what you told him! I for one could not add anything to his advice: he knows this stuff better than pretty much anyone else ;)

-
well for bridge he did email me back saying painkiller at first but then changed his mind to warpigs. This is why i was unsure, im set on the middle and neck. Its just the bridge. Basically i want a big sound which can go from t-rex levels of distorion, to sabbath, to zepplin, and right the way through to a big sounding megadeth type sound. But also the cleans/light overdrive needs to be decent.
-
lol, @ "right the way through to a big sounding megadeth type sound" - man you crack me up with that!
All of the BKPs are very well-made. You'll be able to get very good cleans from all of them, although in some cases you might have to roll back a touch on the volume. That said, I use a miracle man (pretty high output), and it's got a cracking clean sound when I want it to sound like that. If you were to get an AlNiCo V warpig, the cleans will be 'better' than, say, a ceramic pig (and possibly better than my [ceramic] miracle man, but I can't confirm that without first-hand experience).
Basically: Stop worrying about the BKPs. Just go for whatever Tim suggests once you've settled on the guitar you want, and if you're not happy (heh, extremely unlikely), you've got a cool-off period anyway, and you'll be able to swap them for something else.

ahh so tim lets you return the pups if you dont like, well thats a relief not so much sweat now :P!!! And i havent asked tim yet on this, but i will. Basically i dont know if this is possible, but i really love the sound of fendery neck pickups, although i still need a humbucker in neck for leads in metal and stuff. But is it possible to get a single coily (david gilmour) neck style sound but in the middle position? And if so what pickups would you recommend
-
so whats basswood like?
-
quite transparent - it doesnt really bring much to the mix but doesnt take it away either
-
I personally would've gone for the Feline anyday...
-
hhhm but i really want a floyd rose, style trem. By the way, you know the fine tuners on a edge or floyd do they get in the way when picking? Well like i said if you guys can find me a better lefty guitar, go for it
-

They're on the other side of the bridge - The tail of a stoptail doesn't get in the way on a les paul - Likewise in this situation.
-
so any other recommendatons
-

The Ibanez RG1570 has a 5pc Wizard maple/walnut neck.
For the rest of this topic. Take Tim's recommendation over any other.
The whole custom guitar decision. You're pretty young, and stereotypically putting it, you don't know what's the best out there. So, in my opinion, I wouldn't go for a custom. For me, I went from a Stratocaster copy (good God those were the bad days) then to my Indie, which in money terms was fair.
Now with current prices your Iommi SG is ~£350
In this topic you're thinking of a custom guitar, which is ~£1500-£2000
Bit much?
The RG1570 is, in my way of thinking, just at the top of the band of guitars that are for you, it is ~£500. However, I think you need to set your standards before picking ideas out of thin air. Yes, the first option is that it has to be left handed but there are Jacksons, Ibanez', Deans, etc.
Prefer thick necks? Thin necks? H-H configuration? H-S-S? There's a lot and I feel you haven't said everything that could be helpful. As well as you commenting on that a longer scale length seems better for you, even though it's 0.75" difference I think neck profile is a bigger issue. Breaking down your first post, it would be:
"I want a guitar for the summer, I'm looking at a Ibanez RG1570L. I want BKPs too."
You'll need to say more. I think you have the EMB (Expensive Means Best) syndrome.
There's my two cents.
-
I'm not much older than you. Or in fact you might be older than me but Jeesh I've been through a lot of gear. By the time I was 14 I had already owned a MM Petrucci, Charvel San Dimas, Ibanez rg 550, Fender MIJ strat, Maverick F1 (First Gen) etc... And I ended up with a Custom strat which I would'nt trade for anything.
If I were you I'd wait till LGS and try some stuff out. As Jonny pointed out EMB syndrome does suck ass in reality. If I were you (I've been there) I'd wait till LGS and form your opinions some more.
Do you definatley know what you like? I'd get something cheap and of which you'll have money later on to decide which gear you'd like most. Get something that would keep you off getting something for about a year and then with the left-over money I'd consider a custom and believe me... it is worth it.
If only I had the money at the time of LGS or else I would've bought Feline's BC RICH PDT_010.
In essence I think time is the best healer(?). If you're definatley sure of what you like then go ahead. But I was hasty and lost about a grand on mistakes through selling.

I hope it's still as I remember it from last years LGS. I bet you'd still recognize me

OK - here is an absolute bargain on ebay from one of the forum members.
It is a lovely guitar and already has a BKP Miracle man in it.
Johnny Mac would love this - but he already has something similar
Somebody here should snap it up.

well im not sure on anything, obviously i will have to try it out. But where i live in order to try out any guitars really i have to pay £40 to cross on the ferry (i live on the isle of wight by the way).
But im posting early (almost 6 months in advance) so i have a long time to get feedback and advice, and also hopefully wont make any hasty decisions. As for pickup config, i woul really want a HSH and as for necks, i dont really mind to be honest. But if you guys could suggest, what you consider good lefty guitars.
Thanks
-
I wouldn't say there is much of a difference between leftie and a right-handed guitar in terms of quality :? .
In all honesty I think Jon's Feline would be the best option considering that it is similar to your other choices. Good quality build, the best pickups in my opinion money can buy as well as it's other properties.
Just as an obversation ya know. If you really want a floyd (Get an old Ibanez one PDT_015 Lo pro edge pro.) than perhaps Jon can fit you one on the Feline if so you decide to choose it.

I'd imagine he built it with an angled neck due to the TOM - I think that affects the idea of installing a Floyd.
Or I might be making it all up.
-
well how much would it cost for a feline guitar to be made with a a 25.5 scale length, a floyd rose style (low pro or w/e) and no pickups. Or with the one tim recommends, which is warpig a5 in bridge, cold sweat neck and irish tour middle.

Send FELINEGUITARS a PM.
His website too as well would help you. I think his website would help a bunch too.
My MSN is there, feel free to add me if you want and I'd help you if you want :D .
