What's everybody got Wah wise? I run the RMC Wizard (Tim used it on the BKP demos) I sometimes wish it was a bit more vintage sounding....
Any ideas for a smooth wah, vintage wah and a more aggressive wah?
-
At the mo, I have 2. One in my pedal bag/board, the other for when I do any recording.
The pedal board one is your common or garden CryBaby GCB-95. Nothing to write home about.
The other was a bit of an eBay find, which kind of restored my view of eBay a bit. It's a ColourSound Wah-Wah, that looks more like a big red shoe shine box, but has a wonderful vintage tone to it. The downside is the fact that it is only battery powered, though if I really wanted to, I could rig up some kind of power connection, though I wouldn't want to damage/modify the case. According to the Harmony Central review, it has the dubious credit of being the Isaac Hayes "Shaft" Wah. Cool. ;)
-
I gig a standard Crybaby wah,on its own it sucks the tone really bad when its of,but i have a true bypass box that i kick in to bring the wah in to the loop.I did have a vox wah and regret parting with it but the crybaby is cool.
-
I don't own a wah! I originally had a Crybaby back in the day, and then had a Morely Pro Wah/Volume, but I never really used 'em, so I gave them both away.
-
JH 1 Hendrix wah that Dunlop make is on my board.........I've done a true bypass mod so it's pretty transparent.
I too have an original Coloursound Wah.........beautiful but a touch too microphonic for live so it lives in my studio these days.....lovely tone.
-
I have a Vox 847 wah that's been modified for True Bypass, it's had an external volume control fitted so I can balance the wah/un-wahed sounds and it's also got an external 'Q' control that slightly changes the tone and feel of the wah.
I like it a hell of a lot more than the standard Crybaby that I had before :)
-
the new Zakk Wylde wah is meant to be good.
can even alter the 'stiffness' of the pedal action etc
-
My guitarist has got the Mark Tremotti (spelling) Power Wah, it sounds damn sweet, switchless, and you can adjust the delay time so if you want the wah to carry on for a while after youve taken your foot off, or if you want it to stop dead.
I currently use the Morley Bad Horsie 2, but i might have a twiddle with smithys cause i'm considering switching.
-
I have an old Jen Crybaby that I use mainly as a tone boost. My main wah is a musitech tube wah - it uses a 12AU7 (I think - it is a while since I was in it). JJ Cale and Bugs Henderson both use it. It is a great front end to a valve amp. I also have an older Morley, but I find it is almost more like a volume pedal in some ways (and who thought it was a good idea to have bass 'down' and teble 'up' ). Last one is a sort of hybrid wah-volume, a Snarling Dogs 'Erogenous Moan'. It is supposed to be a backwards guitar sound.
I also have a Mu-Tron and E-H Dr Q envelope filters.

Vox 847.
Brow, you've confused me.
You modded your 847 to be true bypass?
Ok, I thought the test for true bypass was to take out the battery and see if you still get a signal through it?
I did that, and it does. So I though the 847 was true bypass already?
I cant see that mine being some sort of special edition having lots of little union jacks all over it makes any difference
Where am I going wrong?
-
I have one of the Crybaby Classic's - the Dunlop Crybaby's but fitted with the original Fasel inductors. Its really nice, but Im often tempted by a Teese Picture Wah.
Skybone, you wouldnt need to actually touch the case of your wah if you wanted to power it by the mains. As long as its a 9V battery, then you get adapters which fit into the battery socket, and draw the power from the mains. Zvex sells Power Plates, like this:
here: http://www.zvex.com/powerplates.html,
but obviously those are sized for his pedals. But I'm sure Godlyke or someone includes an adapter with one of their one-spot power source things, i think.

I've got one of those Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah's. It's got a high/low switch eq and low pots plus it can be used likea morley or a cry baby. Sounds wicked!

but...they look so...ugly  !

Hey I love the Weeping Demon - huge chunk of metal like it came out of a tank factory
Johnny Mac - Is it worth the money?
-
crybaby 535 Q for defin8... its an amazinly versatile wah and will do everything you need with the variable Q settings
-
Anybody tried a Keeley wah mod?

I only paid 90 quid for it and like you say it's built like a tank and i think it sounds great so yes!!

I didn't perform the mods. I bought the pedal through someone I know on another forum and he modded it for me, so I can't really answer your question I'm afraid :?
Sorry

The Coloursounds have sounded really cool whenever I heard people play them, and so I was bidding for one on ebay some months ago, but it just shot into stupid prices as the bidding closed up; I couldn't convince myself that I needed to spend more on used gear than new gear! I mean, I reckon that most of the "classic" players back in the day usually just got some wah pedal off the shelf, so why shouldn't I? :)
So instead I just picked up the stock Dunlop JH1 Hendrix wah as well (whilst in the States) to replace my "vintagely cool" but utterly knackered Thomas Organ Crybaby (which I bought used but cheap :) some 10 years or so ago). The JH1 sounds good to me, though I ought to do a true bypass on it. On the other hand, I'm most doing home recording stuff with guitar these days, so I guess I can just only plug it into the signal path when I plan to play it!

The battery out and see if bypass works trick doesn't allways give a corect result, some effects have the guitar connected to the bypass and wah/fx circuit simultaniously - and switch the outputs. That means that while the effect won't work without a battery, the bypass will, but it's still ot true bypass!
-
No worries brow.
HJM: then how the hell do you tell if its true bypass or not????

Easiest is with a true bypass box, stick the effect to be tested in the loop but bypassed, and switch the true bypass box, if the effect is true bypass you'll hear no tone change.
Can't think of another way, except comparing the direct to amp, then putting the effect in the chain on a short lead and have a listen.
Nothing's ever easy :!:
-

HJM, i have the crybaby with keeleyīs mods. It sounds great!!! No tone sucking too, since itīs true bypass now also. Robert doesnīt only convert it to true bypass, but changes a lot of components that make the tone come alive. He also puts three trim pots inside that can alter the pedalīs volume, bass response and vocal feel of the wah. I remember you liked how it sounded on that clip i made with the irish tours. If you want to listen to it again, itīs the one called irish tour bridge clip.
To me it works wonders, but thatīs just me. I hope you can find what you want!!!!

Thanks Balde...I remember that clp now...thanks!!

Dude that is sick your band rule :o :D
I love all the heavy stuff as i told u in my other posts and yoour stuff is brill

i currently have a bad horsie 2, but i dont find it gives a squelchy enuff wah. what would be a great squelchy and bassy wah, much like that sound used on the solo for vengeance by yngwie malmsteen? Is this just the general crybaby sound, or will i have to buy one of the more specific models? like the zakk wylde wah or nasal classic wah etc? or even one of those Real McCoy ones?
-
I used to play a Teese RMC3 (great wah), but the wah-mods a fellow Brit is knocking out are just THE BEST in my opinion, checkout this guy...

Thanks - I've heard of them, but never from anybody who's used 'em!
-
Anybody tried a Keeley wah mod?
Yep, I got a Keeley modded Vox wah - with Bass Switch/Inductor Switch and Midrange dial. Sounds lush. A wide range of tones, but I generally go fo a Bass boosted "red" fasal inductor tone - sounds so evil and can get some nasty low notes, especially when using my strats whammy bar. Lush!
-
I have a Bad Horsie at the moment that I am very happy with, although I don't use a lot of Wah. I got it because I really like the idea of just treading on the pedal to get going without having to click forward.
Back in the 80's I used to use an Ibanez WH10 that I thought sounded great - but being made of plastic, it was not up to gigging night after night and the pedal snapped!
-
I got a basic bog standard Ģ59 Jim Dunlop one, and it's not great, but for a quid shy of Ģ60 I shan't argue, it needs a true bypass though. I shall have to look that stuff up and dust off mr soldering iron.
The wah sounds I really dig are on "Band of Gypsies" and "Electric Ladyland".
-
George dennis, orange coloured wah. The guitarist in my band used one and it was awesome, it had a really deep sweep on it, almost had to dislocate your ankle to get all the way up!!!
-
Morley Bad Horsie, I like the swtichness but when the heel is all the way back it gets really quiet and sometimes the spring doesn't spring all the way back, I'd like to change it for something different but having owned a CryBaby, I was really put off.
Andy!

I'm gonna get beat up bad for this I know, but the board needs to rag on me sometimes....
I just bought the Ģ30 behringer HELL-BABE HB01
(http://www.behringer.com/HB01/HB01_medium.jpg)
It's a total plastic rip off of the Dime "Crybaby from Hell" and I'm having a blast! Great Fun for the money! PDT_009
OK Hayden.. I'm ready for my ass-whupin' be gentle...

-
I'd let 'em off on this, everybody copies each other when it comes to wahs! it has a zero return spring or something to bring the pedal back to the same point - at least they've done a bit of R&D!
-
Pheew... That wasn't too bad.
You let me off lightly...

i don't have a wah :( i guess i'll get round to getting one after i've got my hotplate, and 2 full sets of BKP  i'd actually be living it up if all money didnt go on guitar gear!!
-
Gotta have a wah, dude! (Well, I think so anyway :)). If I could only have one toy to add to the guitar+amp, it'd definitely be a wah. Egregious and flagrant wah abuse always pricks up my ears when I'm listening to music. :)
I remember on one of the first demos I was recording, lo! these many years ago, in some studio in Boston, and when it came time to overdub some lead I thought, "Gee, I oughta back off on the tastelessly over-the-top wah blasting and show some mature restraint."
Then I thought: "Wait, this is my demo, and need please no one but me! Let there be wah!"
And there was, and it was mighty fine. Or I liked it, anyway
-
And on the 7th day, the Good Lord Jimi said 'Let there be WAH!'
Andy![/i][/b]

LOL truly, truly scared words there.

And I've just swapped my Morely for a CryBaby, a mate of mine can mod them and I'm going to get him to get all silly on it :D
Andy!

what kind of sound are yu going for when yu say silly? or yu just want ever mod done? does anyonce know of any good wah's that don't use LDRs, with true bypass, that sound any good?
-
Morely Bad Horsies sound ace, I just couldn't get on with the spring not returning all the way and the lack of volume when the heel was down.
Andy!

I've been thinkin about getting one of those for a while now. Is it true/very good bypass?
-
ive got a dunlop crybaby ( the cheapest one i cant remember what its calld) and i would advise you not to get it, it ruins the amps tone and the rubber pads on the bottom come off very easily.
-
yeh i wouldnt get a cheap crybaby thinkin it might sound like hendrix, for that kind of wah you are probably better off with a vox, as thats what hendrix used on songs like voodoo child ive been told
