Hey all, thought I'd share a clip of my Custom wound single coils.
The pickups are mounted in a 90 Strat+ with a standard five way and a 'Tele' switch. The bridge pickup is over 22k and the neck and middle around 13.
Starts with clean on all five positions (2 and 4 on the swtich are in in...er...Parallel I think making it a humbucker of sorts) the last is of the bridge and neck pups together.
After this we have a distorted clip of the bridge and neck then some noodling over a potted backing track. hope you like....cause I love these things :)
Okay, it still wont let me upload to here so please follow the link and click on the demo link :)

Bareknuckle ones :)
Tim custom wound three singles for me, very VERY hot for single coils but sweet as anything.

Thanks mate, I'd like to pretend the tone was in my fingers but.......

So those beasties are based on Trilogies then?
Andy!

Andy!
The neck and middle are basically Trilogies as I understand it. The bridge is a 25k monster which apparently has nearly as much wire on there as a Warpig humbuucker. 15000 winds or thereabouts. I have it screwed down so far it looks like the worlds first low profile pickup :D
-
Basically Hayden's got a customised Sinner bridge and Trilogy neck pickup.
The bridge is insanity...........it takes ages to wind but worth it! 8)

I wants it, someone please lend me some money!
Bleedin' Car Insurance!

That's why we have drummers in our bands isn't it???

My drummer has the same build as a stick insect, bless him.

Excellent tone and playing - have you ever heard of a dude called Steve Vai?
They sound great with distortion - very phat

Thanks everyone for checking it out. The Vai references are kind of funny for me cause I only own one of his albums, I guess what I have heard stuck fast though! :) All I can say is thank god I don't listen to the Maestro Alex Gregory too often

What a tone!! Impressive!
Tim: what pair of BKP humbuckers would sound like this Sinner Custom bridge and Trilogy neck? I ask because I have no room for the SC, but I have a HH alder guitar that would like to get the same tone ;-)
Ced777
-
the closest would be the Warpig its DC is 22K so the custom sinner isn't far off! It also has alnico V magnets like the sinner.
-
It would be nice if Tim could confirm Warpig have the same tone, because there is no clip of it for now.
-
I work for Bareknuckle. The warpig is the closest humbucker to the overwound sinner, it would just have a thicker tone, because it is a humbucker.
The Closest to the trilogy neck would be an Alnico V Miracle man, or a Nail bomb neck.
-
Ok Steve, sorry , I was not aware you work for BK....
Just an idea: would it be possible (and interesting or completly stupid?) to make a HB with one coil "fake" to have these single coils tone in a HB size? The SC has a particular attack and treble I think (diiferent fom a Warpig/NB neck HB)
I am asking for this because I have a HH guitar that would love this tone monster ;-)
Maybe just a stupid idea....

Thats ok!
A single coil gets its sound because of the bobbin shape and size, and because of the fact that the wire is wrapped around the magnets, not sat ontop of it like in a humbucker.
A HB with only onle coil would sound like a HB with a coil split, so it would be kind of like a single coil, but it wouldnt sound the same.
Dont worry, its not a stupid question. And anyway you only learn by asking!
-
Nevermind.
Thank you for the quick answer!
I will think about a Warpig set or Warpig bridge + NB neck...

Actually it's not such a stupid idea, companies like Dimarzio have used dummy coils in their designs and I've experimented with extreme coil offsets that sound very single coil like.
Steve is right though, any pickup derives it's tone not just from the wire and magnet type but the coil size and shape too.
-
So in general could you give me an idea of what the main differences are between a single and hummer given these factors?
i.e.
How would a split hummer sound if it were made of two single coils, and
How would a hummer sound different if it were made of two single coil like bobbins, rather than normal bobbins?
I say this as Im interested in copying the PRS 513 idea of using 5 singles!

Pardon me being thick, but I thought Ced sort of meant, a single coil pickup, but in a humbucker sized package.
Just using normal Strat / Tele magnets, bobbins winds etc, but with a suitable method of mounting in a HB sized hole (and perhaps some cosmetic additions to hide the extra space)
A bit like the MQ being a P90 in a humbucker size.

Wow it's been quite a long time since I last heard this clip. I've got a 2004 Fender MIA strat that still has the stock pickups in, this is a great tone and I'd be really happy to get this tone out of that strat. I'm leaning towards getting some trilogies in there - hmmm....
-
I have to say that I am a fool for single coil pickups.
I love P90s in Gibsons, to me they become more expressive, so I have always wondered what a 'regular' single coil would be like in a LP or SG.
I dunno about anybody else, but split coils just sound wrong, I can't put my finger on what is making it unpleasent (to me).
I'm sure that Tim (or somebody) will explain what is different, not electrically and magnetically (I understand those differences) but the sound itself.

Do you have any CDs out or can I see you playing live anywhere?
You got a very cool style going on there, reminds me of Steve Morse more than anything, just dirtyer and wilder than him, means: better

I should check in here more often!
These pickups are the greatest thing that happened to me, guitar wise, since deciding I wanted a Strat rather than an LP. I've been getting more questions recently so I'm going to post up a vid soon showing off more tones from the pickups.
To this day I don't know what Tim was talking about when he explained these pickups to me, all I know is I've never heard or played anything like them.
As for CD's...Not from me. I'm just a hack that enjoys playing :)
-
And one more thing... while i remember it:
What string gauge\brand do you use? :)
Whatever I can blag from the guys at Elixir usually.
Can't beat answering a post a year late!
