Title: Which HBs for new Warmoth build....?
Post by: jordan on April 03, 2008, 11:16:59 AM
Hey all,

To set the scene a little: I currently have a Warmoth strat (hollow alder with maple cap, and maple neck) which has a set of Apaches in. For clean work and medium grunt, I couldn't be happier with this guitar. Definitely a keeper.

However, now I'm thinking about building another Warmoth, and going for something heavier sounding (think EVH, Randy Rhoads, Nuno etc.....).

My plan for the guitar so far is:
Body = Hollow mahogany with maple cap
Neck = Indian rosewood with Ebony fingerboard.

On the face of it the mahogany/maple body should do the trick, and the relative warmth of the rosewood neck should balance with the brightness of an ebony fingerboard.....

So I'm thinking a set of VHIIs would do the trick. Are they suitably heavy for the kinds of sounds I'm after?  And would they suit the guitar woods? I think the Mules might be a little underpowered for the heavier stuff? And I don't want to go down the Warpig/Nailbomb HEAVY route....somewhere in the middle I think.

So, what say you? Would VHIIs work well in a guitar of that construction?

Cheers
Jordan.

I have a similar construction warmoth (korina/maple cap body and rosewood/ebony neck), with a Miracle Man set on ot and it gets great sounds.  The MM neck is a very bluesy-rock pickup and both of them split well.  I have the megaswitch-P (giving the PRS 5-way settings) and also it has a Wilkinson trem.

How do you like the wilkinson trem? I'm tempted to make this guitar a trem-guitar (the strat is hardtail), but I'm not overly familiar with any of the trem systems that warmoth offer, and I definitely don't want a Floyd.

I have 2 guitars with Wilkinsons - my Pacifica 812 and my Warmoth Soloist. They are very good trems - easy to adjust, solid, tonally very good, and if set up to float with a decent set of locking tuners, you can get away with a fair bit of abuse.

They also have the advantage of having a tension adjustable collar for the arm.

I like the Wilkinson's, they are well made  and easy to set up.  I have them in 3 guitars.  I have Sperzel machines with them and have no tuning problems (then again I don't dive bomb much!).
