So after some time in hospital with only a copy of Guitar and Bass for company I noticed an ad for The Music King and their guitar kits.
Tele with rosewood neck for £69!? (http://www.themusicking.co.uk/build-your-own-electric-guitar-t-style-right-or-left-handed)
Now with a set of Piledrivers this might just work, but for that price I'm expecting a tinfoil bridge and tuning machines made from kit kat wrappers. Anyone had any experience with these? Basswood bodies seem to be a turn off, but it's cheap! But BKP content really polish a turd?

i started out with a similar kit quite a while ago. the neck fit was not great but overall it wasnt too bad. It was a good base for experimentation. mine ended up completely hollowed and capped off with spalted beech, new pickup, tuners and electrics to make a thinline esquire. At that point it was actually quite a nice.. and very playable guitar. The chambering had changed it from being very lifeless and uninspiring into something quite usable
More recently i added a resonator cone.. possibly a mod to far but fun all the same and its nice to have cheap stuff that can be mucked about with

Do a search for reviews on Saga kits (which is probably what these are or somethingh very similar) and you'll get an idea what they are like. I've never built one myself but it seems people that have built them had to replace all the hardware and electronics and the quality of workmanship of the wood pieces leaves a lot to be desired too. It's that cheap for good reason. With the costs of finishing the body (doing a good job is not cheap even if you do it yourself) and replacing all the hardware and electronics, you might end up with a playable guitar. Or not. Depends largely on your skills, the luck of getting a reasonable kit (variability is high, so I'm told) and how much money you sink into it. In my view, it's not worth it and you'd be better off buying a project neck and body off e-bay and using those as the starting material rather these cr@ppy kits. Could be fun though. If you have low expectations and want to try it for fun, go for it but what most people would term a 'nice' guitar is probably unlikely.

Well the idea was for this super cheap kit with some quality high output pickups, that can be used later in a 'proper' guitar 8) Don't think I'll bother with this kit though, a quality body and neck and decent hardware seems a much better route.

For a few quid more, http://www.axesrus.co.uk/ might be a better bet... never used them, but at £50 for a body and a little more for a neck it sounds like a pretty good deal...
