Title: Nagging question about Michael Angelo's picking.
Post by: silentrage on April 05, 2008, 07:47:34 PM
Ok so I went to check out a local guitar teacher and basically got my playing completely torn apart.
So now I'm going back to re-examining my technique, mainly picking posture, economy of motion, rigid thumb/index finger, etc.
And I thought the most efficient technique I've ever seen is MAB's, so I looked through the shrapnel and starlicks videos and got kind of confused by his picking hand.

I know how gliding on top like he does probably results in less resistance but how the hell is he keeping those string muted if he's doing a lick that spans 6 strings and his palm never even touches the strings at all?
I know most ppl use the tip of their index finger to mute when going up but that only works on the string you just moved off of and it does nothing for resonance noise.

Maybe a cranked noise-gate?

I'm pretty sure that I have seen a video with him having something to dampen the strings near the nut. maybe it was just for that video, does he use open strings much?

from what I rememebr years ago after seeing him at a clinic, its just incredible technique-he did a lot of palm muting..had the double guitar with the string dampeners as well....about 10 hours of practice daily will help
-funny story..after the clinic, my buddy who hosted the randall clinic took MAB out to a local redneck bar for beer and laughs...the local country band let him get up onstage and play a few..they didnt know who iin the hell he was.....after the first few bars of the solo, the band quit playing and watched as he damn near melted a pick-no one clapped but us .....they were too shocked!nice guy(this was in 88 or so..)

That's one of the best celebrity (if MAB can be refered to as that) stories ever!

also remember him doing the 2 guitar neck thing...I was about  20 yrs old at the time...he played the rhythm of "Purple Haze" with one neck and the lead..spot on...on the other
..one of my friends, obviously looking for something to validate our "normal-average" guitar skills, asked him during the question-answer segment if he could"play the blues"...we hit him in the back of the head...and,yes,he turned the pentatonic minor a few times (on the double neck,no doubt...Scott never spoke out of turn again...)

I think he only dampens the strings when he does the double X, he doesn't use a dampener for his normal super fast alternate picking stuff, and that's what I'm wondering about. If you watch closely his picking hand hovers above the strings supported by 3 fingers while only the pick touches them, no palm mute, no noise.  /scratch head

He should play with a metal pick and after a song, light a cigarette with the pick, or the strings. :)
