Title: A guitar I'm going to have built
Post by: Perandor on April 13, 2008, 12:55:05 AM
Here is  a guitar that I'm getting a luthier in Colorado, USA to build to my specs.  The body is Hawaiian Koa.  The top is flame redwood.  The bridge will be a steinberger r trem.  The neck will be mahogany with a monterillo fingerboard.  I'm hoping the pickups will be a Black Dog bridge and a Mule neck, but the dollar's value is low now; not sure when I'll buy 'em.

Oh yeah, the theme is the desert, so hopefully I'll get flamed chrome covers.

More pics.

Monterillo pic is too big, but you can pretty much see the same thing at jonsbasses.com

I really need to go to bed. I sat looking at the picture of the top for a good 3 minutes thinking 'why is it in the shape of a brontosaurus'. I then realised that due to tiredness my brain was playing tricks on me.

God i love redwood - even that picture wont capture the sheer 3D depth it has in real life.

My interesting (to me) fact of the day about redwood is that the figure is caused by the weight of the tree.  The giant redwoods are so big that eventually the bottom 3rd actually becomes compressed like this.  This is not the same for figured maple.  And for anyone worrying about chopping down giant trees for a guitar, i know the redwood i have had came from trees felled over 100 years ago for road clearance and stuff (cant speak for all of it though).

anyway, looks beautiful

I am much of the same mind, Redwood curly, Redwood quilt, Redwood burl are all so incredibly godly!  I can't wait to build a guitar out of Redwood - hopefully a Redwood burl!

Alright mates, here is another update for my project guitar.  I ordered a beautiful piece  of Honduras Mahogany off of ebay, and it arrived today, so I'll have some pics of it up.  I should have the neck cut and routed for the truss rod any day now, and then I have to radius the fret board, glue it, and fret it.

Looking good there.

I missed this thread first time around. That redwood is going to look awesome on your guitar. Hell ... it looks awesome just sitting there  :D

Are you going for the 6 in line headstock, as per the template on the mahogany, or a 3+3?

Well actually, this is going to be a headless guitar, so I'll just cut the headstock off.  I'll make the other neck normal and sell it though.

regarding the trem, why not fit the new XS-Trem from Headless Research instead of that R-Trem? It should be alot nicer quality?

cool top  8)

Not to argue, but out of interest - what is your problem with headless guitars?

I'm with Fernando - I have an inherant fear of headless guitars.  They just look at bit wrong to me.

Still each to their own  :D

I like headless designs on super-modern guitars. I think this baby's gonna look sweet!

+1 on the fear/dislike of headless guitars.

It's obviously down to Perandor to do what he wants but I just thought that if the headstock had a matching top - same as the body - it would look even more awesome when finished.

Having the guitar headless might even detract from the seriously beautiful redwood top.
