My Wez made guitar is finally ready although I still haven't seen it in the flesh. It will be at least a week before I get my hands on it, it's going to be a long week

Riff Raff pup's, black limba body, spalted maple top, flame maple neck, ziracote fret board.
The inlay is the based on my pet lizard (desert iguana) called Smaug.
-
That's an awesome guitar! I hope you have fun playing and showing it off.
-
That looks absolutely excellent !!!
That week is going to feel like 3 ....
-
i'm soooooooo jealous, what is the lizard made out of?
-
Holy Sheeyat! Very nice.
-
Lovely job Wez. With all this great gear from you and Jonathan popping up on this forum I'm going to have to give myself a kick in the arse and start coming up with something a bit more exotic.
Cheers,
-
GORGEOUS!
Someday I hope to afford one of those with a few changes to the controls  .
-
i'm soooooooo jealous, what is the lizard made out of?
He is made out of reconstituted malachite.
-
:o Wow. That looks amazing. Love the colour though would prefer a satin finish. I want one of these again now  Better start saving..
-
Awesome - did you come up with the design? Kind of looks like an iceman but with a shorter horn on the treble side.
-
I just made a mess :(
Bloody lovely! Congrats to all involved :)
Roo
-
Congrats Sue. You've had to be very patient waiting for it. I hope you love it ! It certainly looks the part.
Nice work Wez.
-
thx everyone, i am really happy with the way this build went. Some superb wood on this build and it sounds awesome
I only strung it up properly this morning so want to give it a little time to setttle in before i let sue have it!!
The design is mine, i have done a few like this before and i think there will be a plain black one with solid paduak body and neck available at some point (blatent plug). It was based on the fernandes ravelle but most of the top half is different and everytime i make one i end up shaping it slightly differently to suit the wood
_tom_ : if you like satin bursts on spalted maple this is finishing tomorrow so someone could get a bargain:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270228335416&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=017
(apologies for the 2nd blatent plug!!)
really happy with how the inlay turned out, i had some grander ideas but in the end i think this suits the guitar better.
-
Yep I was watching that then realised I really cant afford it right now :(
-
I am very surprised you've had no bids on that one!
If I had the cash and it had a trem I'd be sorely tempted!
-
thats amazing!
-
I actually let out a loud "Ba-luddy hell!" at that guitar- looks stunning!
And the lizard is a very nice personal touch to. Good stuff. :D
-
Oh! That is lovely, I said 'Oh!' out loud when I saw it. A bit like I just did looking at Anna Friel on the Telly just now! :D
-
I am very surprised you've had no bids on that one!
its always more difficult to find the right buyer for something so unique. ... i wont mind too much if it doesnt sell and obviously i wont be making too much money if it does.
unfortunately i dont have the room to keep loads of guitars about untill the right person comes along which is why i priced it so keenly on ebay... if it doesnt sell there it will go to a local guitar shop where i wont make much more once they have had a cut unless we really push the price high.. which just means it will take longer to find the right buyer. catch 22, which is why i dont mind selling the occasional guitar off cheap if it means they get out in the world being played...
-
Aww that is the Sex, Wez! Very well done sir! :D
-
Wow.... just wow... :o
-
$%ing hell that guitar is gorgeous.
Any chance of a headstock pic?
As allways Wez - I abso $%ing lutely love your stuff.
-
NIce guitar!!! 8)
Wez has some nice wood!
-
Excellent guitar Wez, I bet she sounds superb.
-
Any chance of a headstock pic?
-
Oh and here is a pick of the whole thing.
-
Yeah, great guitar, beautiful wood.
I also love the stratty one on Ebay. I think that someone will get a bargain there, as long as they know what they're looking for...
I would imagine that it's pretty tricky being a smaller producer and getting your name known. Places like this must help a lot.
Mark.
-
i like how the headstock came out - its extra thick so i recessed the tuners. with them being locking sperzels less post is needed above the face anyway
the point in making it thicker was because i wanted an effect similar to one of those fat finger devices.. more mass at the headstock means it increases sustain as less string energy is wasted making the headstock flap about. Now i am not obsessed with massive amounts of sustain, you can buy a sustainer for that... but this really does work and was noticable from the first note i played on it.
-
Personally I hope Sue hates playing it... then I can play it instead
-
Gorgeous!!!
-
that looks awesome

Wez, do you believe it can be done with any tuner? (thinking in copy your idea :P  )
Have you worked with Planet Waves Auto Trim tuners?
I don't get tired of say: this is an amazing guitar!!! Lady, you'd better watch for it, if a fat, strange guy appear in your street, better kill him before he gets your guitar! :D
-
it should work with the planet waves, you might not even need to recess them.. measure the tuners and draw an accurate plan
-
I think this guitar is my favorite of all WezV's stuff. Superb job man!
-
My Wez made guitar is finally ready
You are one lucky prozacbear. If that guitar plays and sounds half as good as it looks (and I'm sure it will!), that's going to be a real killer guitar. Congratulations.
The inlay is the based on my pet lizard (desert iguana) called Smaug.
Great design, and a stunning piece of work.
-
I think that in it's own right, it's a beautiful guitar.
A bit too minimalistc to my taste, and it has some feats i wouldn't want, but as i said, a beautiful guitar nonetheless.
congratulations
-
minimalistic??? :P
-
mmmm am getting gas for a wezv
-
I love that guitar, the shape is awsome, and the woods... The woods are beautiful 8)
-
minimalistic??? :P
No, it's got all the controls you need!
I really like the way the spalt (it really is spalt this time, isn't it?) looks almost like a stylised flames pattern.
-
 looks like the bridge has an afterburner the way the spalt goes
-
mmmm am getting gas for a wezv
Get in the queue
-
Beautiful in a very "rough" natural sort of way. You need to take it to the woods for some nature pics.
-
I would :o
-
yeah definately spalt this time philly... although kind of not as well.
its been acrylised, its a special process involving acrylic polymers, high pressure and a curing process to make it completely solid and stable... but still very woody. technically it doesnt need a finish as it can just be buffed up but we wouldnt have got the burst that way
it actually contributes to the sound more like it was rosewood or something like that and its a great process for expanding the choice of fretboard woods. like this spalted maple fretboard on an ACG fretless bass
http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Gallery/137/
-
Wow, congrats to the both of you, that is an incredible guitar! Looks really awesome, i like the way the shape has evolved from your first guitars, Wes, it suits that wood choice and the finish perfectly :)
-
Collecting on Sunday 27th April 2008.
6 days to go.....
-
I know you've got a few guitars, but have you really resorted to storing them in the bathroom? I'd make sure he gives it a good wash before you pick i up
Lovely guitar mate, I like it a lot. Also, I see the other one sold (although i couldn't see the pics as my computer decided to crash) nice one PDT_003
-
its in my kitchen for the pics- not bathroom... since its recently decorated and had the best lighting it seemed a good choice.
i sold the stratty one on ebay last night... didnt get what i hoped for it but it all turned out ok. the guy has over 50 guitars and started talking about having me make one especially ( and at a proper price too).. he may have to wait though. paid in cash and picked it up within an hour of the auction ending

Sounds good!
Its a shame you didn't get much for it - But a potential customer is good!
-
i got enough, just not the ideal.. cant complain
-
I know you know the score better than I do, but that amount of money for a builder who is relatively unknown is good. Surley you must be fairly happy. £2,000 and guitar mag reviews must be round the corner soon
-
yeah i'm happy at this stage
all that matters really is that they are out in the world being played and my prices are heading in the right direction
the guitar shops keep telling me i should be pushing prices much higher but i would rather not have them sitting about in guitar shops
-

If the guitar shops in your area are anything like the ones around here Wez, their mark-up pushes the prices into the upper stratosphere; and then of course they've got all the clowns who walk in off the street and say "yeah but I could buy a FENDER for less than that". They're looking at adding at least 50% to what you can reasonably sell it for.
What do you think guys; would you rather pay an extra seven or eight hundred quid for the "benefit" of buying a hand made from a high street outlet? Methinks not!
Why work work your nuts off for some retailer to retire on the proceeds?
Sorry for the rant :)
-
yeah, i completely agree Bob. It would definately push the prices to a range i dont want people paying for my stuff yet

PMT by any chance?!?!?!
I live in Hockley, and sympathise!!!
Personally I'd rather go to the source. Places like this help - you develop a relationship with the craftspeople before ever meeting them, and that can only help with the end product that you're after.
Mark.

I have to say it's kinda weird when you tell people that you are having a custom guitar made, you can see them thinking 'But you could buy a Fender for that'. I seem to keep having to explain that a good custom build will make a stock Fender look like a bag of sawdust.
But kudos Wez, no-one I've shown the pictures to has been unimpressed, or went away thinking Sue was mad to have it made.

I still have the image in my head of that Strat body that was comprised of 6 or so pieces of wood...
Ya pays for a name...

minimalistic??? :P
No offense ment Wez, it's just that i like my guitars with 2 tone pots, 2 volume's, and a lot less of a "natural" look, finish wise.
It still looks like a lovely guitar, and i bet it plays wonderful, but it's simply too minimalistic by my standards.
(i'm not entirely sure minimalistic is the right choice of words though, but i seem to be at a loss as to how else to describe it)
-
nah, no offense taken.. i can see it might be minimalistic from a controls point of view, although its still got more than most people actually use
i think its definately not minimalistic visually so wondered what you meant

5 days to go......

the guitar shops keep telling me i should be pushing prices much higher but i would rather not have them sitting about in guitar shops
There MUST be a better way of getting such workmanship and design to the attention of those who want to buy such instruments.
Retailers certainly have their place and I absolutely don't mean this as a total criticism of their place and role in the market.
But for the small builder, they either (a) add a large mark-up, making prices uncompetitive, or (b) serve only a small local market, or (c) divorce the maker from the player, or (d) all of the above and more besides!
There are plenty of small independent builders, most suffering with the same problems ... and there are (I believe) many potential buyers who would like to sample "different" brands that they don't see in their local store.
eBay - with all its faults and problems - isn't the answer, it's just a necessary evil.
So ... what is the answer? This should probably be a separate thread!

Probably a small builder consortium of sorts. Wouldn't be too difficult or expensive, I'd imagine.
Ooooh, imagine the gas!!!

Started a separate thread so as not to hijaak this one!

I love this guitar, I like the slight Iceman details on it.
I've been fancying a 7 string extended scale through-neck iceman/mockingbird hybrid lately. I'll have to drop MR V a line once I have a some funds 8)
-
5 days to go......
Any finger nails left. Last month I got a new car for the first time ever, the wait's bloody horribe. It's gonna feel like a long way from Southampton to Burton - well it is a long way - but it'll feel even longer. Train or car, at least driving you'll have somthing else to concentrate on.
EDIT: But on the train you could cuddle it all the way home.

might as well make it multiscale as well!!! (fanned fret kicks ass)
-
you're a monster Wez, you hear me? A monster! :)

Someone is giving me a lift so I guess I can cuddle it in the back seat. Getting it home and plugged into the old Rockerverb 50 will be when the fun starts 8)

i did do some quick videos on my digital camera - just straight into the little rock with the treble and bass set at 12 o'clock
god awfull playing as always
http://uk.youtube.com/user/wezv
i was going to do some higher gain stuff, the guitar does it well but my camera doesnt!!
-
love the sound of the fanned fret guitar
-
yeah, so do i... i still havnt finished it because i might be tempted to sell it if i do!!
-
what pickups in that one and did you sell the padouk one?
-
that one has a manhattan/mule combo
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/test4.jpg)
the paduak vendetta is still in for re-spray.. not really i priority project but i think nath is doing it at the moment when he gets chance as there is another guitar being sprayed black at the moment... hopefully neither of them will be too much longer
-
thats pretty like that combo of pickups whats going in the padouk and what colour finish
-
still havnt ordered the new hardware or pickups for the padauk one - it will be black!!!
-
what the paduak is black
-
the paduak was red but was turning more brown... it needed a respray anyway.. we were doing black... its going to be black :D
-
block coulour or kinda see through(see the grain)
-
its a nearly completetly black - you might see some grain in bright lights
i'm actually really interested to see what the shape looks like with just a block colour - most of the ones i do are decidely woody
-
looking foward to seeing this....is it going for sale afterwards?
-
WE GOT IT!
We'll post up some more pics soon, but I just have to say a HUGE thanks to Wez for a really great guitar, it looks spectacular, and feels really nice to hold. It's probably my overall favourite guitar at the moment. That might be because it's new, but what the hell.
It plays really well, even with my playing, fantastic clean tones (I guess thanks to Tim are in order here too) the Rif Raff neck is a beautifully well rounded tone. The bridge rocks up nicely with a little gain, and holds it's own up to some pretty heavy distortion.
I don't think there is much hope of Sue not playing it so I can have it, guess I'll have to get my own...
Thanks again Wez, it really is awsome. If you are ever in these parts do drop in, I think we owe you a coffee at least, and the chance to play it through the Rockerverb, which works really well.
-
Excellent- I bet that seemed like a long week. A week may be a long time in politics-its an age if you are waiting for a new guitar.
-
Actually it's not been too bad as I've been busy at work, but last night seemed longer than normal :)
-
thx rich, it was great to meet you guys and finally put faces to names.
just make sure you both keep me informed of how its getting on... its a bit easier letting them go when you know they have gone to good homes!!
its been an especially fun project for me, cool inlay, fantastic woods, great finish and one of the favorite of my designs (kid in a sweet shop)... all capped off by a really amazing sound which made the long wait to the finish line worthwhile for me
-
wanna see finished project
-
the first post was pictures of the finished article...

I'm just resting my limbs after giving the new guitar a good, long workout. I'm very happy with my acquisition, it looks stunning (and unique), and is VERY easy to play. The tone also has real depth to it and is very different to anything else I have (loads of bite).
I must admit to a fair amount of fiddling, truss rod, action, pup height, etc. But I'm a fiddler by nature and whenever I get a new guitar it takes me a few weeks to dial it in to what I eventually settle on, and to honest that’s half the fun :D
Thanks very much Wez :band5:
-
Ugh...
Jealous =(
-
Oh! :o
-
Great work again Wez, I love the spalted tops with black burst, great combo!
-
gorgeous guitar - I've said it before, but I love the shape and the top on this one is really nice. PM me with a ballpark figure on how much one of those would set me back so I can get saving, ha ha.
-
Very tasty. Congratulations!
-
:D ... i knew you wouldnt be able resist fiddling with it!!!
-
sorry had hijacked meant the paduak when doen

Congratulations indeed! Fantastic news for all involved :)
Oh, and a bloody LOVELY picture of the top, too - that's one hell of a finish on that baby!
Great work, Wez :)
