How does the Korina compare to the Mahogany of the Mira? I've only ever heard an Epiphone V korina and that didn't exactly sound that great    no fault of the korina though.

If you do get a green one, change your name to Tripletfan.

really nice guitar Dave, but it's slightly worrying that just when I think you've shown us all your guitars you post pix of another one I've never seen before, ha ha.  never seen the red one before either.

is the Korina one a 'silly money' PRS or more on the affordable side? - I'd like a PRS in my collection but won't cough up £2k for one.

Very nice indeed but a strange spot for the toggle switch.

The red one is a Mira, HTH.  I've posted it before on the site.

The McCarty is reasonable money I guess - £1800.  Yes, that's a lot of cash but the guitar is SERIOUSLY good.  I absolutely love it.  So much so, that a major cull of the guitar collection is imminent.  These two cover a lot of bases, especially with their coil taps.  The Mira is an SG/Tele and the McCarty is a Les Paul/Strat.  I'm a complete PRS convert

The best way I can describe the tone differences is like this:

Mira = Angus Young on the AC/DC "If You Want Blood" live album (think 'Bad Boy Boogie')

McCarty Korina = Brian Robertson on the Thin Lizzy "Live and Dangerous" album (think 'Still In Love With You')

Ahhh damn you, everytime I see a Mira, I like it more.  :x

Sorry.

The korina looks sweet. Is this what they call "white korina"? (as opposed to black limba which is sometimes also called korina... very confusing) A Mira in that wood/color would be schmex.

Yep, it's white limba that gets branded as 'korina'.

If PRS make a korina Mira in the future, I'll buy one  ;)

Ditto, but maybe only if it's a 22-fretter.

The McCarty looks great, Dave, I knew you'd end up buying it!

It's awesome Phil - as good as I thought it would be.  I couldn't resist it.

I also played a McCarty Artist Pack with a rosewood neck @ £2999 but the korina suited the tone I was after better.  The McCarty AP was a bit more strat-like and a good all rounder but it I wanted more of a contrast with the Mira.

Plus I didn't have 3 grand!

It's interesting looking at the two guitars side-by-side and comparing the 24-fret with the 22-fret.  I like the way they compensate for the two extra frets by moving the bridge rather than re-sizing the body or making the cutaways deeper.  Neat.

Post by: Twinfan on April 25, 2008, 10:19:51 PM
Yep, both are very comfortable to play.  I'd say the McCarty just feels that bit better to me, and I think it's a 22 fret thing.  They're both awesome guitars though.  The wife has named them "Caramel" and "Fudge"

I've got 4 others currently earmarked for dropping at Sounds Great on Monday for commission sales.  Great guitars, but I'm just not going to play them any more...

White Tokai SG Special
Tokai Love Rock Relic

Ooh, those last two are surprising!  Does Mrs J get anything in return for sacrificing her bass?

She's had a Yamaha electric piano recently  ;)

The Gibson SG is great, and rare, but my Epi is more 'Angus' for gigs and the McKorina is better for me for bluesy stuff.  I like the extra clarity and feel of the longer scale length.

Your wife plays bass??

I CANNOT get my wife to play bass

Can't rid of her though - she keeps buying me guitars!

Great looking PRSs by the way. Luckily (for our wallets) I've yet to try one that I like, or that I can justify spending that much on a guitar (when I want to keep all the others as well - and I don't even play live anymore!!   )... but... your recent conversion and your posts about it are slowly starting to get to me though

They are sweet looking love prs just never spent over £1000 on a guitar yet.....been lucky with some that should have been that but reduced.

Think if i do spend £1000 or more would have one made(although them mira's are tasty)

Twinfan, I had a feeling you'd end up buying that McCarty! You've made my PRS GAS come back though.

Seriously, it looks lovely, and I'm guessing sounds absolutely great!

How was the store to deal with - helpful etc? I'm asking cos, as you know, they have what I'm after, and I'd be buying mail order? (Sorry for the hijack).

Congrats man, that's a fantastic axe.

Thanks guys.  I'm a complete convert as the 25" scale length just suits me perfectly.  I always found 24.75 a touch cramped, and I know it's not a lot different but it's enough to make the tone (and my playing) that bit clearer.  I find both guitars soooooo easy to play - they just work for me.  These 'plainer' PRSi are also much more to my taste as I don't do bling.  Just give me nice wood, in a well built guitar.  Job done.

Simon - Mark at Guitars4You is a top guy.  The McCarty is the third guitar I've bought from him.  I found his site when I bought my Martin J15 acoustic as it came up in a Google search.  I called in one weekend and bought it.  I bought the Mira sight unseen knowing how Mark looks after his guitars.  Everything in the shop is treated as if it was his own.  Once played in the shop they're wiped with a cloth and put back on display, plus they're in tune wearing decent strings.

If you read some of the 'rants and raves' on his site you'll understand his approach to guitar sales.  He prides himself on customer service, and it's top notch.  With the McCarty:

* I emailed an enquiry asking when he was getting some in, mentioning I'd recently bought a Mira from him
* Swift reply said to give him a call as there was one available in the near future in blackburst if I was interested?
* I told him I wanted a natural with moons and could he let me know when one was available
* A few weeks later an email popped up saying one was coming soon and was I still interested?
* I confirmed I was, the guitar was earmarked for me

When it arrived it was visually checked (briefly) and put back in the box.  It wasn't put on his site, no-one else knew it was there and when I turned up at the shop on Friday he had to remove the final bit of packing before tuning it for me.  This was the first time the guitar had been played since he'd had it.  He even made me a brew while I demo'd it   :D

I can't recommend him enough.  If you want a PRS, he has a very good relationship with the importer and snaffles the good stuff early.  Mail order is not an issue - the guitar WILL be great.

Wow someone is stocking up serious gear it seems, congrats TF! This proves once more that you always ned 2 of each to be happy.

I also looked at the g4u site before, they have a pretty big stock of PRS and good prices. Did you by any chance play a 245 as well?

I am not sure if I want the wraparound bridge or rather a Tremonti trem kinda thing. But guess after all the raving, I should give the MIRA a check against an SG. I also like that yours has birds, always loved birds and they are something even my uninterested GF recognises positively (oh rare occasion).

Maybe I should also clean up some stuff to get some new quality gear.

At the moment I am GASing at:
-SG Angus Signature
-Gretsch Silver Jet 6129
-PRS Singlecut Trem
-Gibson Firebird

By the way, are you considering to replace any of the PRS stock pickups with BKPs?
Title: I guess I need a green one now...
Post by: Twinfan on April 27, 2008, 10:14:20 AM
I didn't play a 245 Hunter, no.  I was after a guitar with great top fret access, so a Singlecut wasn't even on my list.

The PRSi are staying stock - sorry Tim    They're fantastic as they are.  In my opinion, PRS really knew how to match up guitars and pickups in my case.  They sound great right out of the box.  The Mira/SC245 and McCarty pickups are very well respected for vintage flavour tones.

Maybe I just got lucky?  I dunno.  These two are easily the best playing, sounding and feeling guitars I've ever played.

Cheers for that info TF, he sounds like a retailer who takes pride in his work. The fact you were happy to buy the Mira sight-unseen says a lot, I think.

+1

In my very limited experience, Mr Smith knows what he's doing.  When I first got the Mira, I was contemplating a change just out of habit, but there's actually nothing at all wrong with the sound (I wish the pickups were covered though).

Of course, if you were going for a radically different tone then that's another matter.

Exactly Phil.  The Mira is supposed to be SG-like and it is, executed very well.  The McCarty model is supposed to sound like a good Les Paul, which it does as it has a thicker body than a Custom 22 or Custom 24.
