Which I am thinking, rather seriously, of getting
Do I sell my beloved Jackson?
I dont play it so much these days
But I did most of my early-days learning on it
But its got the best non-use to money-I-can-get-for-it ratio
But it was my only good guitar for years
But a custom, though good value, is pricey and my bonus doesnt cover all of it
But its my second most playable and comfortable guitar (after my Legra)
$%
What is a guitar-a-holic to do? Sell his first proper guitar as a contribution to his next custom shop, or suck up the cost and have more guitars than his flat can hold?

How many other guitars do you have?
I'm pretty much a 1-guitar-at-a-time man. I have a backup guitar, but I never ever ever ever play it (which is a good thing as it sucks BIG time!). If I were to get a custom, I'd keep my lovely Ibby as a backup, but I know I'd never play it. Then the old old one can go.
That said, I was most annoyed when my parents sold my first guitar (okay it was a rubbish quality squire strat, but still...) without asking me whether I still wanted it. Now that I DID want, as it was my only guitar for over a decade!

Hmm, go the custom route then think about it. Do you have other guitars that can go first?
My first decent guitar was a Jap Jackson - I've still got it because it's been thrashed - but I shipped out a couple of USA Jacksons last year which I never thought I'd do. My usage changed after acquiring a custom... so I bought a couple of Carvins as backup, and now they're gone too hehehe.
The first guitar that you sell kind of feels bad, like selling a family member. However you definitely get used to it especially if it's to fund a monster! ;)
Look at selling a decent guitar on as a good karma act. Give someone else the pleasure if you're not using it yourself.

... like selling a family member.
Who in Gods name does that!?
-
Keep it if you can. I've kept all my guitars that have sentimental value.

I would if I could get anything for them!
Personally I think that if you get a custom built then the rest of your axes should be very much secondary anyway. I know there's a few views on this, but I think that a custom should be the absolute pinacle of the collection, otherwise what's the point.
Saying that, I'm basically of the opinion that a custom is the sort of guitar you should want to be buried with, it should be for life and should be the raving dogs bollox.

Haha, I had guitars sitting around that I hadn't used in 15 months, that sort of thing... One of them I'd regularly gigged and rehearsed with for 7 years. Sending that one off, to Belgium of all places, was weird.
My point is that putting something like that towards a custom is worth it. And if you look at selling the guitar as passing the good vibe on it, well, that helps too! ;)

+1
Plus if it stops have sentimental value you can sell it then :P

+1. I have sold many guitars and wish that I never had done.
-
I don't see what's wrong with a wall of guitar cases :D don't sell your guitar!
-
Never sell your first! I could be homeless and scr@ping pennies for tesco value slop, but at least I'll be there in the gutter with my trusty Warlock strapped to me. :D
-
Wise words. (Telling me what I want to hear!)
The Jackson goes nowhere.
-
You know it makes sense.
-
My Epiphone explorer, on the other hand, is outathere. Hopefully.
Wont get as much for it, and it sounds great and has a nice 'none more metal' character (its the modernised, hetfield-a-like 'beast' model, with some (reverable) personal touches of mine)
But zero sentimental value.
Bye bye epi beast!

And that 7 string I never play?
Well six is enough!
It can sling its hook too.
-
I feel better now.
Getting rid of guitars you like but mean nothing to you >>>> getting rid of one guitar you can get much more money for but is an old buddy.

EXACTLY! What do you need that High E for anyway? :)
-
sounds like you did the sensible thing, mark.
what new custom are you going for?
:)
-
Another legra.
When you find awsomeness, you get (well, I get) nervous about trying anything else in case it doesnt measure up to the awesomeness you got before.
Cant really talk specs at this stage: I have my ideas and Bobs thinking about how to do it best and its not finalised yet.
-
ah, nice! let me know what you decide to go for when it's finalised! :D
-
You don't play your seven string right? Sell that shitee!
EDIT: oops, i didn't read the whole thread...
