Title: sudgestions on a new amp
Post by: Deano.UK on April 28, 2008, 10:52:23 PM
Hey guys,
just need a bit of advice on buying a new amp.

my main amp is a Marshall 100DFX which is great for what i use it for.

however, im now in the market to buy a smaller amp, as this one is getting to big to lug around to places where its not really required.

here are the models i have been looking at

Vox AD30VT
Orange Crush 30
Line 6 Spider iii 30

out of these 4 models, im highly swayed to the Line 6, for versatility as i play a wide range of songs, on a wide range of guitars (acoustic / strat / tele / Les Paul). on-board effects im not too bothered about, as i have a Line 6 X3 Live for all that.

all of the above seem ok to lug around, an im planning to go an try them all out at the weekend, but i would value any input from you guys or any alternatives i should be looking at.

Cheers  :D

Personally the only amp I've particularly liked in them price ranges and that size are the Roland Cubes. I really hate Line6 Spiders (so muddy and undefined), not tried the Orange Crushes, and the Vox ones always seemed so dark to me.

The AD30VT is perhaps the ideal home practise amp, as it can dial down to whisper level using the built in wattage regulator. It also nails the Vox amp models - as you would expect.

As chance would have it, I'm about to list my AD30VT in the seconds out section and then ebay if no one wants it here, as I have just bought a couple of amps. It's 4 months old and is boxed/manual etc with a cover.

Feel free to PM me if you want a decent price on it.

Also consider vox da5 quite cheap in soundcontrol at mo...don't look like much but a big sound(for a practice amp)

since you have the Line 6 Pod X3, which already gives you all the amp sounds you could need, how about something like this:

http://www.tech21nyc.com/pe60.html

here's how much it costs:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/tech_21_power_engine_60.htm?partner_id=79570

and it means you can change your amp modelling unit any time while still having the speaker and power amp.

Sam can be said with one of these:

http://www.atomicamps.com/

Which has a tube poweramp - While the Tech 21 seems to be a solid state poweramp (couldn't find any mention of tubes).

Ask Jonathan (feline) about them, I think he has one.

cheers for the input guys, all very helpfull :)

im torn between the Vox and the Atomic 18watt... the atomic seems to be exactly what i want, just a giant good quality speaker... no real need for an amp sounding amp.

however, ive googled for about 5mins, and can find nothing but good reviews, but no where that stocks them in the uk... anyone know a dealership?

Normally you order them straight from the manufacturer I think.

If it helps, there is one in stock at Electro Music near me, they dont have it on the website, but it was there when I bought my Engl last Friday

http://www.electromusic.co.uk

Give them an email or a call (might be best a call, as it took em a couple of days to reply to my email) and find out what they say :)

Cheers, sent emails both.

ideally want to get it from the uk, as id rather not have the hassle of shipping from the US.

if it proves to difficult to get hold of... ill be playing one of the vox's over the weekend, and might drop some cash if i like it :)

If you get the Vox, then the Marshall 2 Channel footswitch works with it and it's half the price of the Vox one.
