Title: Feline Guitars
Post by: gibsongaz#1 on May 03, 2008, 04:53:25 PM
Does any one own one? (I note the man himself is on here so he may be biases...LOL!) But I really fancy a custom build based arounf a Les Paul and the Lion looks the ticket!

See, i'm thinkin I would love a Les Paul with the Norlin neck from the 70/80's era, with M Queen in Neck and Mule in bridge in the same colour as this Eggle:

That would be a sexy guitar! Mmmmm!

You wouldn't regret it.
Mine is 99% ready, hence, I can't tell you what it plays like.
However, the whole custom thing is a route that I would recommend and it's great choosing all the finer details along the way.
Sometimes it's actually difficult working out exactly what you want given so much choice, fortunately you have the benefit of Jonathan's knowledge to help you weigh up the options you're considering.

The guitars I tried in Jonathan's workshop were all top notch.
I tried out the aqua-marine Lion which is on his website..... I've played lots of guitars, but that set the benchmark for singlecuts for me.

If the current owner ever wants to sell it (and he won't) I'd buy it straight away!

Although I don't own a Feline, I've played 3 of their Lions at length (along with much of their other recent stock).  They are very nice guitars & it's only through extreme self-restraint that I didn't buy the korina lion in marine stain - a truly gorgeous guitar.

Also, in the last few years they've done work on several of my guitars, including 4 refrets, a major rescue job on a Warmoth assembly that I botched  & all sorts of other small repairs/modifications.  Their work has always been top notch & they will be seeing more business from me...

Thanks guys! roughly what sort of waiting time is it? I would need to sell my Gibson LP deluxe to fund it which will only leave me with a Blade Tele for the said period!

Its funny - I have only ever really considered custom acoustics. It has just hit me like a steam train that I can get THE guitar I want built for me! D'uh!

I believe Jon is trying to get it back down to 10-14 months again.

dont forget you can pay him in installments... so if you can get the deposit together you can wait a bit before shifting the Gibbo

Jon makes great guitars and his fretwork is amazing.  If you get one you will be able to specify everything you want.  It makes a big difference if you know what you like and what you don't.  The Korina Lion at LGS last year was a brilliant guitar, as are many of his others that I have played.  I know his fretwork first hand and it is probably the best around.

I would go over to visit him and try some of the guitars he has in the shop.  That will give you an idea of what you want (and how much it will be).

Thanks guys
I would be a bit biased in what I would say but I'm glad you guys all seem happy.

Fretwork is something that I am very picky about - I think it is the most important thing with a guitar.
Thankfully as well as making custom guitars we do a lot of fretwork as repair work so we do get lots of practise!

Lions with archtops and inlays start at roughly 1950 (allow more for fancy tops) Build time has gotten a bit out of hand over the last 9 months but I am reigning it in again now we have regrouped after losing Chris.

As Will said I am hoping to bring the build times back to a 10-14 month range
Thanks to the guys who have been very patient

Our payment by instalment scheme does seem to work really well

i believe jonathan's fretwork perfection borders on some sort of disturbing fetish.

when i picked up my feline V jonothan did a set up on it for 11s and lower action. he did a test of the most of the frets with the new set up - no buzz anywhere of course, and i couldn't help notice jonothan let out an evil doctor style laugh to himself while he was doing it.

he fretdressed my Epi Goth V, great job naturally, and showed me his special jig for doing such fretwork with what was a deep and genuine pride.

I've had two guitars refretted by Jonathon and the difference as to how they were before is just jaw dropping! I had Stainless Steel ones fitted to one, when i first tried it i found it amazing. I've played a lot of the guitars at the LGS and his workshop and you will want one instantly like i did!  :D

Title: feline customer service, tops!!
Post by: ThorpyFX on May 08, 2008, 08:23:48 PM
I'm relatively new to the forum (posting wise anyway) and i thought i would add my tenpence worth about jonathon and feline guitars..... Without a doubt the best guy and guitars out there, i own the purple feline lion that has been listed above as an example of his work. Due to being shipped off to afghanistan 7 months ago jonathon ensured that i got to play the guitar before i went away (otherwise it would have been nearly two years since ordering before i got to play it). This was despite it not being 100% to his satisfaction, he offered to let me keep it for a while and then on return from afghan he would sort it so it was 100% to his and my satisfaction. This is just an unheard of level of customer support. add that to the fact that his guitars are unbeliavably good, his payment system works without getting any banks richer and he is a really knowledgable and decent individual. I cannot speak more highly of this company and jonathon. so before you buy that gibson or fender, look to feline-much better allround (and he uses bkps mainly too).

Glad to have you back in one piece from the front line .
Will get the purple beast firing on all cylinders........was playing it earlier and tone wise it slays!

Hey, I'm selling my Feline Tabby Classic Electric Guitar (Custom Telecaster Style) with Hardcase.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Feline-Tabby-Classic-Electric-Guitar-Custom-Telecaster-Style-with-Hardcase-/121000592974?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c2c32864e

It's a great guitar given to me as a gift from my guitar tutor. I'm only selling it as in desperate need of the money.

Thanks

Nice guitar!

Haven't tried a Feline yet, but from what everyone says, you should have no problem getting an impeccable guitar. I am however getting a custom guitar built here in the States, and like Matt77 says, it's really really cool choosing all the parts that will eventually make up your dream guitar that no stock guitar could ever get you.

I can pitch in here. I have a custom Lion from Jon and its just simply an amazing guitar.

Nowhere else could I get a Les Paul style korina body, with bolt on 25.5 scale maple neck and ebony board with MIDI, body contours, quilt veneer coloured for my personal preference and neck profile copied from my fave Washburn N4.

Plays amazingly easily, sounds awesome, looks superb and there's only 1 in the world ;-)

I'llk just add to the praise too.  I have a neck that Jonathan revived and made fantastic and I've just ordered one of the 20th anniversary Lions.  I've played many of his guitars and all of them have been great.
