A while ago, there were posts on GAS. A few which I remember were PoshCollins' post on 'current GAS' and my post on 'GAS test', which were all interesting to know.
However, time to put it into reality terms!
After scouring eBay I had found at least TWO guitars, which currently I could afford. So - my question really is..
Would you? Do you already? Why not?
As a person with no annual income (YET) I admit I am pretty naive in thinking, I have money. I can buy that, etc. etc.
So, those with income - do you buy guitars left right and center? Do you buy guitars for the playability factor? Or just that it looks an absolute beauty and/or steal and you wish it to adorn your living room wall of guitars and/or other rooms of your house. Do you think it's a waste of money? A good idea?
When I do get a steady flow of income I do plan to buy guitars till my heart is content or my house has a maximum population of guitars and two people just to be able to pay mortgage. Objections anyone?
Just to summarise, in case no one wants to read through that:
Your view on buying guitars, one guitar and that's it? Or continuously buying with a reasonable amount of certainity of the guitar? (i.e. not a fake, etc.)
Your view on spending your income on guitars, are you crazy for guitars? Not so serious? Do you like guitars so much you are up sh*t creek without a paddle and your only paddle-like object is your prized 20 year old SG?
Hope this can become a worthwhile discussion.[/b]

I used to be bad. Really bad, but I'm reigned in rightly now. Frequently find it's the notion of an instrument/amp etc. I want more than the actual reality. I still have wee fancies for things, but it's mostly under control.
That being said, I'd love a Swamp Ash Les Paul, the 3 P-90'd beast tele I've seen only in my mind, a Fender Super-sonic and a few odds and ends of pedals. For now, though, Bob, Clint, Wobble and my wee VC-30 and assorted monkeyed up pedals will do the job.
Another good thing is having a good few musicianly mates and borrowing/swapping gear for sepcific purposes.
-
i usually kid myself with some lame excuse i need something, or if its a bargain/cool/unusual etc etc
the thing is though, i've been really feeling the effects of the 'downturn' on my bank balance. i've been collecting parts for a guitar. once thats put together it will be the last guitar thing i buy for quite some time..
-
For me, I aim to get what I want, i.e. specs.
But then when I have the mindset that I want a guitar, it usually just goes all over the show.
-
For the last couple of years I've been going through a phase of buying just about anything that takes my fancy. Largely as a result of being a member of this forum, I have to say . I discovered the wonders of Japanese guitars (after many years of being a strict Gibson/Fender USA man) and went a bit crazy. I also developed an unfortunate habit of finding a guitar I liked then immediately wanting a "spare" one the same (this from someone who only plays guitar - badly - at home  ).
I'm not rolling in cash, but my mortgage is small and I don't have any vices or dependent relatives. Even so, the guitar buying got a bit out of hand so I had to start selling stuff - this is good, I've jettisoned some dead wood (literally) that hadn't been used for years.
The result of all this buying and selling is that I've learned a few things, such as:
- "My" guitars are SGs, LP Juniors, Teles and the odd Strat or V. I won't be buying any more Les Pauls.
- Japanese guitars can be just as good as American ones.
- Cheap guitars can be just as good as expensive ones.
- If you're convinced you really really need a guitar, wait and see if you still really really need it after a month (or at least 2 weeks...).
- Buying 2 guitars in a week is almost never a good idea.
Anyway, I think I'm coming through the other side now - I find myself pretty much totally GAS-free :D . And like gwEm, I'm starting to believe there may be some truth in all these doomy gloomy economic forecasts... :(

I find that the fantasy of owning every guitar I've ever longed for is kept at bay by the reality of having very little spare money. I've got 13 or so Ibanez guitars and a handful of others. 8 or 9 amps, a hotel fridge-sized rack full of stuff I don't really use, a large shoe box full of pedals, and more cables than I know what to do with. I'm a touring musician, I have endorsements and am pretty well taken care of in the gear department, yet I still check eBay EVERY DAY when I'm home.
I'm constantly hunting for older Ibanez guitars, Ibanez bodies, Ibanez necks, obnoxious hi-gain amp heads, less popular shred-era guitars (hamer californians + diablos, robin medleys, etc), rack stuff, speaker cabs, LP's with factory Floyd's, anything Todd Langner or Lee Jackson ever touched, etc. Practically anything that was for sale in the late 80's and very early 90's is on my mental shopping list. I'm sure one day i'll end up building a garage out of ADA MP-1's and you'll have to stomp just the right presets on the Bradshaw floorboard to gain entry.
At the end of the day, there are lots of things I want that I simply can't afford to buy and that, friends, is how I deal (or don't deal haha) with G.A.S.: poverty.
That being said, if I were to all of a sudden hit the lottery or win a big poker tournament, you can bet your life that I'd have a room where one wall was made out of Metaltronix stacks.

I think most of the regulars on here know about my GAS
I've always wanted lots of guitars, ever since I learnt to play when I was young. I've always liked lots of different tones and looks, and the way to achieve that is to get lots of guitars. For example, nothing else sounds or looks like a Tele. So I needed a Tele.
As an aside, through all this searching, I was also after 'my tone'. Yes, that Les Paul does the Les Paul thing really well but am I a 'Les Paul person'? It turns out that I'm not.
Like PhillyQ, I've fairly recently started to work out what really floats my boat. Basically, I like solid body guitars made of mahogany and in particular korina. I don't really like maple tops as it makes the tone too cutting for me, plus I like a longer scale length as it gives a bit more room for my long, thin fingers. I can't get on with the bodies of semi- or full acoustics like 335s or Casinos either, they're just too big. I've recently 'got' PRS-s and discovered that they're 'my' guitar. They're not for everyone, but they're certainly for me when it comes to feel and tone.
So I've had a bit of clear out recently too and got rid of a few duplicates. I'm now left with 22 guitars (gulp!) but they cover a lot of tonal ground. I have some cheaper ones that are purely for gigging, and my Gibsons/PRS-s that won't really leave the house as they're for my enjoyment only and I don't want to risk them being damaged/stolen. I also have my Ibanez collection which is just that - a collection - plus a few sentimental guitars that I just can't sell.
I'm actually still GAS-ing for a few things:
1) An original 1987 Ibanez RG550DY for the collection
2) A white single pickup superstrat
3) A new 50w custom built amp, based on my modified 120w (clean!) Laney Klipp
So even when you've spent a fortune on guitars, GAS never completely disappears as there's always something else you'd like. GAS just slows down and your taste gets more refined. And expensive......

As someone who has severe AS (not just guitar stuff, but CD's, stereos, LP's and computers), I am the wrong person to tell anyone what to buy and what not to buy! I currently have over 60 guitars, about 20 amps and more recording gear than some studios! I used to play and have very limited money, so I would constantly trade gear, which ended up in me getting rid of some very nice guitars and amps (not to mention a great 1962 P-bass).
Once I started to make some money, I started buying without selling or trading other gear (though I have sold some recently, but that was to get some original guitars - I sold custom shop Firebird 1 & 7 to get an original 63 Firebird 3). At this point it probably is crazy the amount of stuff I have versus the space I am trying to keep it in. I was once a full time gigging musician, but that was over 30 years ago. Having said that, I can't imagine not playing. One of my friends gave up when he had a family and I still can't figure out why he doesn't want to play every day. I am lucky in that I don't have kids to worry about and my wife hasn't given me gyp over it. I still think of things I would like to get if I had the money, but original Les Pauls are out of my range! Over the last month I have picked up 3 new guitars, one Bravewood Strat that I waited about 15 months for, a 5 sting custom Will Scott bass that took about 4 years to come to life and a strat with all base plate equiped Apache's that I put together from Warmoth parts.
If I was rational about this I would trim it down to 15 or so guitars and 10 amps, but I am not, so at this point I am looking to get a bigger house! Over the next year I already know that I have another 5 or 6 guitars coming that are being built for me. I also have my eye on a couple of vintage instruments that I would like to buy and I am seriously thinking of picking up a PRS Mira! Antd that doesn't look at the amps and recording gear!
Beware because once you start down the path it is really hard to stop (though if I had bought some expensive vintage guitars in the late 1990os rather than investing in the stock market, I would be a lot richer!!).
-
i don't have money for any of it so i ask my parents to buy me stuff for the old birthday or christmas occasion, which actually never really works out anyways. I could care less about gear at the moment though, while i lust over a lot of stuff, i am much more worried about my musicianship at this point. Practicing clean is really my best resource at this point, i can hear the distortion in my head so i don't really need a nice amp or high scale pedals - those come later.
-
I went for ages just owning one SG at a time and not really thinking about the other choices. I love SG's, and if I had to only have one guitar, it'd be an SG. However, after discovering this forum when looking for new pups for said I realised there might be more to guitar than Angus' axe ...
So I now own a PRS SE Singlecut and a MIM Baja Tele too, and played an Ibanez something or other (is it me should Ibanez put more effort into naming their guitars? ... this was an HSH guitar) recently and now I want that too :) The Tele was a real impulse buy, as people have said its kind of about covering tonal ranges and feel and the Tele filled a big hole there. TBH I could spend a lot more than I do. I also find myself thinking things like "Hmmm, a P90, sounds nice but I have no where to put it" which creates further GAS ... but I always try to sleep on it and think again in the morning, or go and play the guitars I do have and then decide if I really need another one. The PRS SE helps there because its freaking lovely. I do need a HSH Ibanez though I think ... :P
My current GAS is however all Amp and Effects related. Amp GAS I find easier to manage because they are hard to impulse buy and carry home, but effects wise its all too easy to buy on the internet! Currently trying to decide between a Blackstar Dual thingumy, a Fulltone Fulldrive, maybe a Tubescreamer too as everyone seems to like them ... should have a Wah ... &c. It all seems cheaper compared to guitars, but it adds up fast!
-
Like some others here my gas started when i found this forum and is now fuelled by it.
I came across it by accident after following a link on another forum. I then spent ages searching the forum trying to find the perfect pickups which i got (blackdog and mule) but havent stopped spending ages on the site since.
My girlfriend has given the site a nickname "the blackhole". I spend way too much time reading the posts and getting drawn into all the gear people discuss + its black screen + it seams to empty my pockets on new toys i keep buying.
I have made lots of minor purchases since then and am going to be making lots of new investments this year as i am struggling to control the gas.
I am holding off until post London guitar show when i know what new guitar and amp i want.
I really want a new guitar and have been looking at Teles recently. I really like the Baja and am thinking its not alot of money so its not a waste if it doesnt end up being a keeper.

Little off my own topic but I officially hate my parents.
They won't let me order online, or from someone overseas (as they find it untrustworthy)
So on eBay I found someone who lives in Northern Ireland! Selling a PAUL REED SMITH! FOR CHEAP AS CHIPS COMPARED TO RETAIL PRICE (around £800)!
Guess what they said..
NO.
For $% sake.

Bad luck there Jonny. Have you still not got a bank account, or they are preventing you from spending your own money on it :?

Bad luck there Jonny. Have you still not got a bank account, or they are preventing you from spending your own money on it :?
I have my bank account open. But with only £1000 (yes, I meant only as in I can't buy that PRS)
But even so, they are saying that I can't buy anything. No joke.
RANT EDIT: Seriously. My parents can and have been such *beep* tards. But it's all balanced out, but seriously REALLY - when I want a guitar, and it's beneficial to THEIR standards (not overseas, no scams, etc.) and it's something I want, I don't see what's wrong!
When you say "I'll only do it by these terms" and if those terms are met and you still say no. That is just being *beep* .. BAH! *beep* sake.
I felt inclined to censor everything with *beep* seeing as I found myself saying it a lot.

I haven't bought a guitar for over a year and I've had the same amp for all the years I've been playing electric guitar. I still consider myself a victim of GAS, even though it's not as severe as with other guitarists. I don't have a high income, but I don't have great expenses either so if I saw a guitar I liked (within a reasonable price) I could buy it, but I have to limit myself to one per year. I do have several guitars in mind at the moment that I waaaaaaaant  My girlfriend plays guiar too so I don't have the problem of justifying gear purchases to her, more so than I do to myself. And I like to think I've got pretty good selfcontrol. I could live with one guitar and one amp if I was suddenly in financial trouble, but we'll see if it comes to that.
I don't think there's anything wrong with buying what you like when you like it, but it can become a serious problem if the price of your GAS is that you can't suport yourself or your family. However, I haven't heard of anyone that this happened to. Lots of loaded guitarists around I supose.
Then there's the musical (down)side to GAS. I used to play in a band with someone who'se musical philosophy was that he had to work a lot in order to buy gear for himself and the band (PA, studio stuff, mics etc). But the more he worked the less he practiced so in all the time I was in the band, we never got good use of all the expensive gear. I would have prefered if we had more time to write and practice. Luckily, he changed his priorities and he's writing better music now.

one Bravewood Strat that I waited about 15 months for,
and that little thing has been responsible for my strongest attack of GAS since i started building them myself...
Never really been much of a strat man, or been that keen on red ones tbh... but phils bravewood strat blew me away and i seriously started to consider gathering the funds for one.
Now that has to be GAS at its worse because i have no need of one, can hardly play, and can make most of the things i do want to have a play with.. but somehow i found myself trying to justify why it would be worth it
strangely i have also been GASing for Danelectros recently - but thats the other end of the scale.. it was the shear perfection and authenticity of the bravewood i would be hard pushed to copy... its the cheapness of a danelectro i would struggle with - always be tempted to put a flamed maple top on instead of the hardboard and then its missing the point!!!

I think me and my wife (prozacbear) have a pretty poor reputation on here. The problem is we both get GAS for different things, and when the other is suffering an attack we don't say things like 'No it's probably not a good idea', we say things like 'I bet that sounds awsome', which really doesn't help.
The result is I'm pretty much broke, but we have some nice gear now, and I actually suffer GAS less now as I think we've got most of the bases covered, but I still get it (I know of a certain Marshall JMP up for sale that sounds interesting...)
-
I'd say I'm the opposite of gas, I spend time planning on buying things but never actually getting round to buying them, when I first started reading this forum, I would dream of having an engl fireball and got so close to buying one, but having never played live, logic finally kicked in
I spend too much time practising on my Jackson RR3 with amp emulation software, but I keep learning new things to improve tone and trying them in guitar rig and amplitube and usually they make a difference, my tone is pretty fixed now, so I can't see it improving much more without buying some real gear
right now I've been meaning to get a vox valvetronix xl combo for the past 3 months, then I'm going to get a tube screamer, then change the speaker for a vintage 30, then mod my RR3 with a real floyd, locking tuners, ceramic warpig bridge and coldsweat neck and a kill switch
I've tried lots of other peoples guitars but I've always liked my flying Vs best, some other guitars just feel huge when I sit down with them and don't have the high fret access of a V, I'm too used to the classical position for playing sat down as well
now if I won the lottery, I've pretty much decided already what I'd get
4 custom electric guitars, all rhoads Vs, two 6 strings, 1 in C standard, other in drop D, 7 string, 8 string
dean accoustic ML
engl powerball
peavey 5150
marshall dsl (to mod the hell out of)
bognor cab
orange cab
engl cab
a million different speakers to play around with
tc electronic g-system
tube screamer
some other pedal I can't remember the name of
wireless of some kind
power conditioner of some kind
random stupidly expensive cables
2 sm57s with other recording gear

I used to have huuuuge GAS for guitars but then realised that I disliked them once I seen them in lefty form. We just don't get much choice!
I still love JEM's in lefty style though and Bob is now on the job :D
I found myself GASing for loads of stuff that I never really had time to implement such as a new speaker and tubes, whammy, fuzz... and I just kept in my bedroom with my Microcube instead of going out to play on my VC30 in the garage. Lets hope the warm weather and a Legra stocked with NB's + an IT will change that!

Put the VC30 in the lounge, much more practicle and I can't think of a better use of space

I seem to go through different phases of GAS. I've had guitar GAS in the past - now apparently over. I've had effects GAS, also now apparently over. With guitars it was always pretty much a "one in and one out" situation. Settled on a Les Paul, and that's been my only guitar for about 9 months now. I have occasional minor urges to buy something with single coils and/or better high fret access, but these seem to be very controllable.
My pedalboard is now pretty much finished (and full !). With pedals now it's still a "one in and one out" philosophy. I ALWAYS sell anything I am not using. I have one guitar, one pedalboard and one amp. It's the only way I could financially cope.
My wife is a huge help here. She's actually usually very supportive with me and guitar stuff, because she knows how important playing is to me. But she is also a voice of reason at times.
Amps are my real problem. Sorted on the cab, but the GAS for amps seems unabated. Ridiculous really, as I already have pretty much the perfect amp. The way I run it these days is to buy another amp, compare the new one with my current amp, and then sell one of them. It's the only financially viable way of properly getting to try out new amps. I haven't got badly burned yet, and have always been able to sell off amps at similar prices to what I bought them for (or with a reasonable small loss).
Living entirely on benefits is another good reason for my "one in and one out" policy on pretty much everything. In fact, considering our income, I am very blessed to have the rig I do.
As we all know, forums are bad for our GAS. But having said this, if I hadn't started being involved in guitar forums a couple of years ago, I'd probably still be playing a POD through a Marshall MG30 (tone to "die" for - yes, seriously so bad, you would desire death rather than listen to it !). Instead I now have awesome gear and tone, and enjoy my playing more. Now what else could I have done with the £3-£4000 I've probably spent on gear in that time - interesting thought.
-
I have bouts of GAS which are short-lived, but all-consuming.
Much of my spare time is looking into "the best computer components", "the best high-gain amps", tonewoods, effects, cables (someone mentioned these above - can i recommend not buying expensive cables, but getting ClearTone cables from Award Session instead?!) etc etc.
I've always been a 1-guitar-man - though I have a really bad spare guitar as backup for gigs, which doesn't really count! I'm looking at getting a new guitar which has more of the features I want, and it has taken a LONG time to get me to that stage.
I was bad for speakers for a while, but it's all to go in ONE rig, no spares or secondary rigs required - all about the MAIN tone.
Now I've almost completely nailed that tone, I don't have GAS for any other amps, cables, effects, speakers/cabs etc.
That makes it relatively easy on my bank balance, because I don't end up buying huge amounts of gear (and we are gigging, although now we've lost our vocalist so we won't be gigging for a while...).
Also having a financially responsible wife helps enormously!

For a long time I've had a case of GAS that has been rather crippling.. once I added up how much I had spent on my ever-revolving collection of guitars, and it was far, far too much. I've let go of some guitars I really did like, my Musicman JP7 was one, to get guitars I ended up hating, like a ESP Custom Shop SRC7.. but on the positive side, I know what I want from a guitar now :D and hopefully I'll be able to slow it right down.
Other things I've realized - USA guitars usually aren't worth the premium since a good tech can set up a high end Japan made guitar to play just as nice.. they can all sound very good if you take the time to try a bunch and find one that sounds just so.. and so on.
-
I only have GAS for a decent acoustic now. I have two wildly different electrics (errr, neither of which I can play at the minute) and my acoustic just doesn't suit me. Been thinking about selling my old one and what ever else I can lay my hands on to get a Stew Mac Dreadnaught kit.
Other than that, I don't think I'll have any serious GAS until I can play the bloody things better.
-
I have GAS. I've got two Strats and a Discontinued Dean. The deans my baby, one strats got by BKP and my first guitar, a peavy Raptor, which has it's third coat of paint on it. I'm about to re-paint that baby and test out my mad airbrushing skillzzzzzz I'm also considering getting an Epi Les Paul and replacing the broken neck, air brushing the entire guitar and maybe try some more. I hope to start getting some imported guitars, painting them, then selling them to shops to stock some eye poppers. as is... I need more wall hangers.... and walls....

Then there's the musical (down)side to GAS. I used to play in a band with someone who'se musical philosophy was that he had to work a lot in order to buy gear for himself and the band (PA, studio stuff, mics etc). Luckily, he changed his priorities and he's writing better music now.
This is a very good point! I think I am too guilty of spending more time feeding my GAS than actually practising/playing.
And I am not happy with my skills. To be honest despite all the gear I have, I am also rarely happy with my sound ...
Now on the positive side, on the rare occasions when the playing goes well and the tone kicks ass, life is unbeatably great, which more than makes up for it.
But I guess disabling the internet in my home could help my abilities as a musician a lot!
At the moment I think "just one last time" as I so badly want an SLO-100 ...
-
I'm pretty happy with my rig as it is; when I have the money I'm going to BKP my S470 and then I should be happy...or at least relatively risk-free.
I'm another one of those people who sits around looking at gear a lot and never really buying much of it unless I can justify it to myself...apart from the BKPs which I will have; they're more of an indulgence than need but I don't care.
More to the point the amount of gear I can actually afford most of the time is at a square nothing.

The last year or so's been a nightmare. Since January 2007 this has been my 'throughput':
PRS: 2 in, 1 out
Carvin: 2 in 2 out (3rd out pending payment)
Schecter: 1 in 1 out
Jackson: 2 out
Ibanez: 1 bass in.
Acoustics: 1 in 1 out
Diezel: 1 in (Mesa is currently for sale)
Blackmachine: 1 in (pending, part paid for!)
Plus some pedals & other stuff
Not been gigging for a couple of years so have had very itchy fingers. I hadn't been using the USA Jacksons & Carvin 7 that I had so I got rid of them. I replaced them with Carvins - fixed bridge backups to my B2 - and now they're out the door too. This is all due to usage change - first from trem to fixed bridge, and more recently to 7 string so the incoming Schecter is a 7. The bass is on loan...
The PRSi were a bit random. I got the first one cheap for what it was on the spur of the moment, liked it but it didn't fit my day to day style. The one I have now is a keeper and fulfils PRS and 6 string GAS. (leaves a B2, PRS CuRo, and an old Jackson Professional)
The B7 will sort me out for 7 string GAS, although a cheap Ibby 7 on ebay may be a future purchase if gigging takes off.
As I said, bad year. As for BKPs... I'll have them in the B7, I will sort out my PRS with them, and eventually one wil go in the bridge of my Jackson but that isn't high on my list of things to do.
EDIT: As a note if it doesn't get played I've been getting rid of it. I used to hoard a bit but I've got over that! I've not lost much, if any, on any sale apart from one of the Jacksons which I bought new. I tend to buy used.
EDIT 2: I've got an OK paying job and am still skint! Quitting booze for medical reasons hasn't helped with the GASflow...
-
i tend to get a new guitar now and then. i got an acoustic after not owning a guitar for a few years. then i got an OLP MM1 cheap electric cos i dont find acoustics hold my attention. then after getting back in the swing of playing again, i decided id get an american strat cos ive wanted one since i was a teen. been happy with that for ages, but i recently set my sights on a prs se singlecut. that will be it for a while.... after i get me some bk pups. gotta hear these things.
