The Blackstar sounded better to me.

I have the HT dual, and the Dist X, but not the metal muff.

I like the Blackstars, the HT Dual gives you a great range from clean all the way up to high distortion. The dist X is more limited and is really only a high gain pedal, but it does what it does very well (in my opinion). I also like the way they are constructed, very solid pedals.

But EH make good gear, so I wouldn't discount it woithout trying it. You might also like to take a look at Boss Metal Core, it's their new(ish) metal pedal and gives a pretty good tone, again limited in application, but worth a look if you can get to play with one.

It might just be my setup, but I struggle to get a "thrash" sound with my Dual.

I say that it might be my setup, because my Orange only has treble and bass tone controls, no mid to scoop.

Mark.

I have both.

I agree with MrBump, the Dual is better for anything up to hard rock tones.

The MM is better for thrash, metal, scooped mids type stuff.  Which reminds me, I must get mine back from "Malcolm".....

You want the MM I think mate.

What about the Krank Distortious Maximus, or whatever it's called, too?

the best famous branded metal pedals are: mxr dime distortion, krank distortus maximus, ehx metal muff

the mxr sounds a lot like darrell on vulgar display of power, but it's hard to get a deeper tone like on far beyond driven
the krank works great through tubes, especially on the return

but the best distortion pedals i've seen were made by my bandmate, Tiago Zambelli
he made 2 pedals inspired by the dr. boogey pedal, but based on the peavey 5150 e other based on the bogner uberschall circuit
they actually work as solid state preamps, as they have FET gain stages instead of tubes, but using the same architecture of the real amps
tons of gain but they have tube dynamic feel and clarity

Box of metal sounds huge but it is expensive and can only do blistering gain and super barstard gain ;P

lol
i meant it's something easy to make
just pick a schematic of an amplifier you like and pay someone to build a solid state version in a pedal
it's something cheap and the board is very small, so it can have a normal pedal box size
