Exams suck.
Good luck to all of you, I never did that well at exams, but they aren't the end of the world.
-
My Biology went OK. I think I'm heading for a B. Which is well better than a D (I hope)
-
Good luck to all of you. Very glad that those days are long past for me... :)
agreed.

Just had my humanities today... hand hurts from all the writing.
Anyway good luck to anyone else doing GCSEs

I have 7 within 3 days, then nothing for 10 days, then nothing for a week.
-
Mine are nicely spread out in June I think. Only one history paper this year :D 2 Politics, and 1 Comms I believe. then general studies, but I haven't been to the classes for that.
GCSE's were hectic, 2 wks SOLID... with Download in the middle 8)
-
Yeah good luck from me too though I have to take professional exams every one in a while so I am still familiar with the feelings generated.
-
Good luck :) I only had one exam this year at uni (most of the 1st year is coursework) and it went allright. With my a-levels, the head of 6th form thought I wasn't going to make it through the first year, but I got C's at the end so I guess everyone can do it if they actually try, I'm sure you'll be fine
-

Ditto! :)
I thought mine were, until I started my current job and they refused to recognise my postgrad diploma - I'm having to take the exams again.
So, good luck to all those taking any exams in the next few months!
-
I've been having fun laughing at all my friends revising for their AS levels, because i decided to do a music BTEC which has no exams :P
Anyway, good luck to everyone that is taking exams.

I expect your time table is pretty damn similar to mine - I assume you're doing AS levels?
-
Im doing Ass and i've got 2 coming up tomorrow and the day after! Then nothing until the 2nd of June where i have all of the rest of mine in 4 days :(
-
I have RE tomorrow then 3 weeks of nothing then I have all my subjects in 4 days then a 2 week break then a maths paper :(
I've got loads of time left now.
Seriously Woogie, is it me or are the papers an absolute joke? The RS one was easy, Maths Foundation I finished with an hour to spare, Music I almost got kicked for hearing the YMCA
-
Do you have maths as your next exam Posh?
-
Do you have maths as your next exam Posh?
I did my foundation non-calculator one yesterday. It was a bigger joke than KISS when they went disco to be frank.
The calculator paper will be amusing to say the least....
-
First 2 maths papers today - Was pretty good.
Anyone else do Mechanics today?
-
yeah i did. edexcel right? i found it quite easy. it was tight though i had seconds to spare. got music and physics tomorrow. ahhh.
-
CCEA is the most difficult examination board. Looking at the Edexcel, OCR, etc. it looks so easy!
-
Im doing Ass and i've got 2 coming up tomorrow and the day after!
Dear lord, I think you've got the wrong forums!

+ Another one.
When I left school, I thought my exams were over. I've just got back from a training course and have to start thinking about taking the exam for it (to get into the BIG electric substations.... One step down from the power stations, they're propper BIG). Also got NEBOSH (National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health) to do over the next few months and that's a right pain in the arse (something hhcave enjoys by the sound of it).
And I've a got a compentancy based interview (basically a spoken exam) to become a Chartered Engineer. So, for all you guys looking forward to finishing your exams, they ain't over yet
-
I will have more exams, the deal is that the company pays for the exams, I pass them with the apprenticeship.
The principal of them is just getting boring though, I remember the first one, so tense as it is such a big deal etc
-
yeah i did. edexcel right? i found it quite easy. it was tight though i had seconds to spare. got music and physics tomorrow. ahhh.
Yeah, I found both of them fine.
M1 was the hardest M1 paper I've seen, but I had no problems.
M2 had one question which got me untill the last 20 mins when I worked out my mistake and finished it up nicely =)
-

I like the idea of having "NEBOSH" after my name. It sounds like a secret international espionage organisation... or maybe something out of H P Lovecraft.
-
Anyone listen to the radio this morning?
Thanks to the thicko's who decided to post the copyright status on the back of the exam paper I now have to possible re-take my exam.
Basically you have to listen to various pieces of music and comment upon, and in such questions it says name a possible composer.(eg Baroque would be Bach or Vivaldi etc..).
However the copyright on the back says who the music was composed by on the music we had to listen to.
Thanks AQA
-
Freaky. I've just finished me NEBOSH. It is indeed a proper pain in the hoop.

Ha ha, don't get to put it after the name unfortunately, but as headtheball said, it's a right pain in the hoop.
As soon as I fill out a couple of forms, pay a bit of money and do the competance interview, I'm going to have "BEng(Hons) CEng MIMechE" after my name and "Eur Ing" infront of it PDT_023 . Although I'll probably drop the BEng bit..... and I'm sure there's one I'm missing out.
headtheball - what do you do then, something involving building sites by any chance?
-
Laboratory work.
The NEBOSH got handed to me along with health and Safety detail. A bit excessive but a cert worth having, as such.
-
Treble philosophy exams today - Went brilliantly $% YEAH!
-
yeah, but seriously.. how bad can philosphy exams really go!!!
one thing i am really not happy about with the current system is how some of my psychology students had to do 3 psychology exams in a row.... how the F*** do you revise for 3 exams at once.... surely it would be ok to spread them out a bit ... exam season lasts long enough to have a single 1 hour psychology paper each week.... why squeeze the buggers together so much????
-

VERY bad.
Philosophy is NOT an easy subject by any stretch of the imagination.
And this is coming from a Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics student.
And with us it was the same, 3 philosophy essays back to back, each completey different in content, and revision.

I have three different subjects, in the space of four days next week, Economics, Biology, Maths, Economics again.
Then my last day is Economics Biology Biology all in one day. Life's tough. :(
-
This week I had 7 exams in 3 days, spanning 3 subjects.
Wednesday: Double mechanics.
Thursday: Double Physics.
Friday: Triple Philosophy.

Could be worse, though.
Ye could live with a Maths teacher, and have to recall all that gubbins after years of mental atrophy to help her out of an evening...
-
I will say to everyone doing GCSEs now, make sure you revise. I got lucky and got good grades but it could so easily have gone the other way. I just started doing some temporary work at a factory (uni student doing work over summer) and I'm so glad I have qualifications that'll get me into a good career after uni. I cant imagine having to do this cr@p for the forseeable future. Luckily I'm only there for 2 weeks but it seems bad enough doing that  Mind-numbingly boring and having Radio 1 on in the background all day is enough to drive anyone crazy. It's definitely giving me motivation to do well at uni thats for sure :D

noodle. did you core it today?
mine went bloody brillient except for the two log questions in c2.

noodle. did you core it today?
mine went bloody brillient except for the two log questions in c2.
Yep, was a breeze.
C1 was absolutely lovely, C2 was a little more concentration but went pretty perfect.
Only issue was I kept getting k < ln0.002/ln0.8 instead of k > ln0.002/ln0.8.
Did the quesiton like 3 times and still got the same sigh.. I ended up just writing the 2nd one as my answer, hoping the examiner wouldn't look too closely.
Was only a 4 mark question, would have lost maximum 1 mark.
I THINK that's the only mark I lost, I finished about 35 mins early, had enough time to do each question 3 times to check answers.
Chem on Wednesday - Gunna be a flop.
Then 2 more maths exams and I'm off to Download.

Im surprised that you guys didn't do C1 in January. Thought you were doing Further Maths Noodle?
Do you remember the question that you were stuck on? Maybe I might be able to answer.

Yeah I'm doing further, but there didn't seem to be any point in doing them early. An extra few months of practice helps in the long run.
The question was something along the lines of...
24.95 < 25(1 - 5^k)
show that:
k > ln0.002/ln0.8
Very simple question, but I just got that x was greater than. Will do it again now infact :p
-
Lets see,
24.95 < 25(1 - 5^k)
24.95 < 25 - (5^2)(5^k) = 25 - 5^(2+k)
5^(2+k) < 0.05
(2+k)ln5 < ln0.05 = ln (1/20)
kln5 < ln(1/20) - 2ln5
kln5 < ln(1/500) = ln0.002
k < ln0.002/ln5
oh
erm :?
sorry i might try again later.
-
Lets see,
24.95 < 25(1 - 5^k)
24.95 < 25 - (5^2)(5^k) = 25 - 5^(2+k)
5^(2+k) < 0.05
(2+k)ln5 < ln0.05 = ln (1/20)
kln5 < ln(1/20) - 2ln5
kln5 < ln(1/500) = ln0.002
k < ln0.002/ln5
oh
erm :?
sorry i might try again later.
I just remembered, it isn't 5, but 4/5, so your answer is correct since it would end up as ln0.002/ln4/5 = ln0.002/ln0.8.
Still, seems you found the same error as me :p
-
Ah ok good good.
I don't think I've made a mistake cos I specifically kept the arrow pointing in the same direction the whole time and I didn't cancel any negatives. Maybe the question was wrong?
-

Either that or I totally misread it :p
-
surely being the sum of a geometric series, you need the 1-4/5 (1-r) on the bottom of the (1-4/5^k)?
-
a/1-r = 5/0.2 = 25
thus a(1-r^n)/1-r = Sum to inf(1-r^n)
Thus a(1-r^n)/1-r = 25(1-r^n)
-
ahhh god i see now. thats obviously where i f*cked it totally lol
-
All done :)
-
enjoy the summer!!!
-
Starting work next week :P no summer fun for me
If we get on, I shall become an apprentice :D
-
Final exam finished, science unit 6.
DONE and DONE!
:D :D :D :D :D :D

Just found out my uni results- I graduate with a second class honours degree. Sweet! What i expected and was looking for, watch out teenagers- this beardy rocker shall be teaching some mind blowing chemistry come August. Whoo!
-
Congrats. Is that a 2:1 or 2:2?

Roo
just a 2.2, but I'm well happy- I don't manage well in exams usually and I had a few teaching modules pull me down. Recon it woulda been a high 2.1 if I never fecked up a school placement (i done a chemistry/teaching degree)

excellent, congratulations! :)
-
I can tell I'm getting old as I probably know more teachers than kids.
WELL DONE EVERYONE!
-
Congrats, Badger - it's great that you've achieved what you set out to! That's always the main thing in life :)
Teaching is by far and away the most difficult, but simultaneously rewarding thing I've been involved in. It's not my job, but I do teaching on the side, and will always be involved in teaching in some form, being in the industry I am. I have nothing but admiration for teachers, because I know how much effort it takes!!

Watch out beardy rocker, I'd have thought... the idea of a classroom of teenagers is utterly terrifying. Innit.
But heartiest congratulations! :D

I'm a 6'3 hairy mofo, kid's don't scare me. I'll just beat them with a chair if they're cheeky.
What? We can't do that anymore? Dammit...
-
Good job all ;)
-
Mod 10 maths is my only one left on tuesday. 11 weeks off after that :D
-
Just got an email from a lecturer today, passed 6 out of 8 subjects I need for my degree, which means two exams to resit in August. :(
-
Passed my first year of uni! Got over 60% in all modules (85% in one!) except for one where I got 59% so I guess thatd all round up to equivalent of a 2:1 ish for the first year?
-

Yep. A good 2.1 is between 60-70%. Keep it up! first year is a doddle usually...
-
^ yeah, i know some courses don't even count the first year's results, as long as you pass them that's all that matters (which is extremely handy for those modules where you get a choice and which aren't related to your subject degree)...
-

I failed nearly all my first year exams - got a bit complacent because I'd never had to work all that hard in school, I suppose. I was doing maths but only passed politics, which was just a sort of "extra" first-year subject for one lesson a week.
Somehow managed to pass the retakes (which I can't remember at all, I've blanked out the memory of that summer! :? ). But because I'd failed, they slightly restricted my choice of courses in the second year, which meant I couldn't get a First.
Learned my lesson and worked hard after that, got a 2:1 in the end.

I know quite a few people who flunked the first year too, just couldn't make the transition to higher education. But for me i found 2nd year the hardest. Workload increased massively and felt constantly swamped. 3rd was the same but felt easier that i survived 2nd and final year was over before i realised.
-
I think I failed my STEP papers. Revising pure maths harder than the stuff I did at college after 2 year blank whilst working 8-6 every day didn't really work :( Gotta apply for uni again in september now probably. Either way no matter what happens can't go til 2009... Damn.

i don't think that'd happen now. You could fail exams till the cows come home, and as long as you pass them in the end, you could get a first. I know when my dad was at university, only a small proportion (certainly less than 50%) were even able to get onto the honours course. When i was there (different course, though, but i expect it's the same regardless), I wasn't even aware that it was possible to not do an honours degree.
But remember: exams are NOT getting easier. Such a point may not be brought up under pain of death.

Indeed. Previous generations (mine included) were just thick, lazy b@stards.
But nowadays kids get more intelligent, hardworking and downright brilliant every year. FACT. The government says so. Innit.

You can even do a degree studying a certain footballer! That must mean no one knew much about the game back then. :?

Yeah I thought I was going to be cr@p at it, I really hated 6th form and only ended up doing 2 subjects for A-Level  Uni is way better though now I'm doing a course I actually enjoy. Apparently on our course 1st year is fairly relaxed then they pile on the work in the 2nd year, so I have that to look forward to now!
Johnny, apparently Tesco are doing a shelf stacking/retail management degree :? I'm doing shelfstacking there now and I dont think I (or any of the people there) would need a degree to do it!
-

 For gods sake thats taking the piss! Well i'm sure it keeps some people employed in Gordon's unemployment manipulation figures.
I can't see many who went to uni studying cr@p like this doing very well in the general knowledge rounds of university challenge!

yeah. hyper-evolution.
oh, and aren't mcdonalds now an examining board (seriously)?
:x

No, I think McDonalds are just a place that has an agreement with AQA/Edexcel whatever to provide apprenticeship places for BSCs in Burger-flipping.

For my course, if you failed a module you had one chance to retake it and if you failed that, you were out on your arse. There were a stack of people that started my course and I'd say that less then 50% passed it.
(It was an honoours degreed too, shh don't tell Dave  )
Actually what does make an honours degree, I thought that it was being recognised by a professional institution, but think that may be wrong now.
-
^ i'm not sure what makes an honours degree either...

yeah, but isn't that technically the same thing? I realise they aren't making up exams in further maths, for example... :)
