Title: Got a pain in my fretting hand.
Post by: Transcend on May 16, 2008, 12:23:20 AM
I've been playing quite a lot today and when im doing anything with more than two fret stretches i get a stabbing pain in the palm of my fretting hand.

Is this just because i've played guitar for a lot longer than usual in one day and its just muscle pains or should i be worried?

I'd say that it's muscle pain now but if you were to continue to play before the damage has repaired you run the risk of developing RSI at the very least.

STOP.

PLAYING.

You seriously don't want to get tendonitis - Seriously.

Put down the guitar, and rest it for a couple of days.

The stabbing pain is telling you to stop playing.

When it develops into an ache that doesn't seem to go away, you need to worry.

I think that the key to avoiding this sort of pain is to get your fretting hand is to warm up before playing, RELAX while playing, and put out of your mind ANY thoughts whatsoever of playing through the pain barrier!!!

Mark.

i'm 16, and i should have taken a day's rest from piano about 6 months ago when my index finger in my right hand started hurting a little bit, and because i didn't, its spiralled out of control to the point where i cant tie my shoelaces, can't write with a normal pen (my doctor made me one that i can use) etc due to pain, and extensive medical advice has told me that this kind of thing cannot ever be recovered from.

clearly i'm not invincible, and neither are you. i dont want to let this happen to somebody else.

stop playing.

Also - try rubbing a bit of arnica gel (available from a health food store ) into where it hurst - will help reduce any inflamation that you have created.

Also really good for bruises or anywhere where you would use Ibuprofen gel

Leave it longer than just today, tbh. I'd give it the weekend to chill out a bit, then get back to it GRADUALLY! At the first hint of pain, stop immediately and rest for another day or two. Any damage you do at this point is really, really, really bad. Better to lose a few days of practice now than find in a year's time that you can't play any more...

Pain is your body's way of saying 'Stop it or I'll f**k you up', it generally doesn't go in for second warnings either so listen to it.

Muzzzz and ToneMonkey I'm sorry to hear you are suffering, I really hope you can get over it.

The fact that you experience pain suggests that there is some inflamation within the carpal tunnel or similar

Letting it rest will help heal it

Nah, it's my knees (and now back) which are the real problems....... it's only a finger so I'm fairly good at ignoring it.

Nice one Transcend, probably for the best.  May be worth taking a few anti-inflamatries (after food though) to help.

I had inflamation on the elbow of my fretting hands arm (no idea how) and didnt even notice it. so it'd be worth taking them just to be safe if you cant see anything obvious.

two things.

1 - ALWAYS ice after you play, it doesn't matter for how long.  If you take breaks in between go to the sink and fill it up with cold water and leave your hands in there for a minute or two.  The amount of blood that rushes to your hands after and during playing can lead to muscle troubles so ALWAYS ice afterwards.

2 - if it persists look into going to a professional masseuse, it is absolutely critical for chronic muscle pain and works a treat.  Trust me the money is worth it, really.

I'd recommend avoiding cold personally.
The best solution IMO is to keep the hands warm and cool them slowly so on a hot day you'll have no problem but on cold days you might want to stick your hands somewhere warm (for this I recommend a different type of masseuse :fouet: . Sorry, that was dreadful  .) until they've cooled down.

In my experience rapid changes in temperature such as were suggested serve to cause the tendons to contract unnaturally and can cause serious pain. This also leads to rheumatic pains and arthritic conditions if you are not careful.

About a month ago I had pain in my left hand, and it seemd there was a bit of a lump appearing on the back of it.
From fear of any of these things (I think it was RetroJJ's words which scared me) I really cut down, basic exercises for a few minutes at a time, gave me more time to work on chords, theory etc atleast.

I got that too. I went to the doctor's and was prescribed some anti-inflammatory gel. If you develop that the gel will halt the progression of the problem but a couple of days rest will reverse it so bear that in mind.

Actually that was all recommended me by a professional masseuse, he is also a musician so i trust his word.  It is important to warm up before you play obviously.  However, the amount of blood flow that your hands get can lead to those knots in the muscle if you don't ice, the icing prevents the inflammation that would otherwise take place.
