At the St David's Hall in Cardiff. It's a good place to see bands, because it was built as a concert hall, and so has better acoustic qualities than a large concrete shed.
The gig itself was great. Gilbert was very good - I've not seen him play before, and I was impressed. I'd heard his latest album, which was an advantage, because he played a fair few tracks from it, but even the stuff he played that i didn't know was excellent. His bass player was phenomenal, and the band had a very good sound. Only criticism would be that the keyboards were a little buried in the mix. He certainly gave Satriani a tough act to follow.
But follow it he did, in superb style. I've seen him a fair few times now over the past 13 years, and last night was one of the best. the mix of old and new stuff in the setlist was great - He played Time Machine, One Big Rush and The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing, as well as Crying, which I haven't heard him play for a long time and is one of my favourites.
He also had Stu Hamm on bass, which was really cool to see. Hamm was the first truly awesome bassist I ever saw, so to se him play again was great.
In short, Satriani reminded me why his playing was the reason I took up the guitar in the first place. A really inspiring gig.

Nice review!
I've always thought Satch's shows were much better when divorced of the time constraints and awful 'jam' that accompanied the G3 shows.
I saw Satch with Stu Hamm and Jonathan Mover for the firs time for the Blue Dream tour, one of the best concerts I've ever seen for sure!
-
Cheers TO!
I agree about the time constraints of the G3 shows - I've seen 2. One with Michael Schenker and Uli Jon Roth (which, if memory serves right, was around the time of the Crystal Planet album) and one with Robert Fripp and Steve Vai. Satch always seems to get into his stride a bit better when he's playing a gig of his own, somehow.
I think Satch had Jonathon Mover with him when I first saw him - would have been about '95, on the Time Machine tour. I wore that tour shirt to destruction!

I wish this duo came to Belfast, but only Satch is. I didn't get tickets though. :(
-
I was at the Manchester gig, although my night got spoiled by the girlfriend telling me she cheated on me the week before, 5 minutes before satch came on stage!!! so obviously she's not my girlfriend any more
her loss, more guitar time for me!
-
Dude, sorry to hear that! She clearly should have waited until the end of the gig!

it says on the satriani site that all UK shows bar nottingham have paul gilbert...
of course, now i'm starting to worry that they're doing their usual "oh, we forgot that northern ireland was part of the UK" thing... EDIT: even though the UK without northern ireland isn't even the $%ing UK.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm extremely pissed off if true.

Have cheer, Dave.
Gilbert's doing a solo gig in the Spring And Airbrake around the end of the year.

Ja, but,
1. It's not with Satriani.
2. I won't be in Belfast! [Although I won't mind this if he goes to Glasgow since I'll be there (hopefully)]

Yeah, I know it's in Belfast. But I'm going to Uni at the end of the summer, in Glasgow. But hopefully Mr. Gilbert will be going up there too.
