Title: Hi guys, can I get a pickup recommendation?
Post by: Karl Hungus on May 22, 2008, 06:52:29 PM
Right, I could very well be getting one of these (http://www.music-man.com/instruments/jp_BFR7.php) in the near future, and I was thinking of getting a set of BK's for it. Unfortunately, I've never used 'em before, so I'll be looking for recommendations as to what suits best.

I'll be playing through an Engl Invader 100, if that helps.

Thanks.

Mmmmmm BFR7... which finish are you going for?

As for pickups, we can't really help you unless you tell us what sound you want. Afterall, that's what pickup swaps, especially this high-end ones, are for. I think there's many of BKs models that will work great in the JP, aswell as the Invader, so posts like "I have Nailbombs and I like them" isn't gonna help you much.

I suggest getting the guitar first before buying the pickups so you can find out what's wrong with it (so to speak) and then email Tim (or post here again) to find out what will be perfect for you. With BKP, you shouldn't settle for anything less than perfect.  :D

Well I know that the Invader sounds like a Marshall on a lot of German steroids, and the above post is spot on. Check out the stocks first and then decide exactly what needs changing tonally, if anything...

Thanks for the response.

The sound I'm after, well, it's kind of hard to nail down. I'm a big fan of Petrucci, so that'll give you an idea of where I'm coming from, but I would also play quite a bit of Death Metal as well, and then some jazz stuff, kinda like Dave Fuzinski, so I guess I like a versatile sound, but as it's a 7 string, I'd like a tight, clear sound, with good midrange and some bite. If it helps, my favourite pickups so far, are the DiMarzio Evolution in bridge, Lundgren M7 in bridge, and in neck the DiMarzio Air Norton. I've found those work very well for me so far, but everything I've heard about Bareknuckles have been positive to the extreme, so I'm really looking forward to getting some myself.

The thing about getting the guitar first, and then deciding on pickups, is this; the guy I'm getting the guitar from does Bareknuckles, so what I'm planning on doing is getting him to order the pups, and installing it all, so it comes to me all nice and ready to rock, and it's far less hassle for me.

Now, I've been recommend a set of ceramic Warpigs, or the ceramic Warpig/Cold Sweat, and from what I've been told, these are certainly sounding like good choices.

Oh yes, I'll be going for an Emerald burst finish on the JP. ;)

Alright, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

I think you will love a Cold Sweat in the neck. It has the buttery Petrucci-"sing" but is a lot clearer than the AirNorton. Personally, I'd get an Abraxas for the fast and smooth solos aswell as for light-gain and cleans, but that might just be my affection for AIV neck pups. For the bridge position, the Painkiller is often suggested for a Petrucci sound. It is extremely tight and has a lot of midrange. C-Pig would be in the same ballpark but it's more about the brutalz and less of the bite.

Are you the Karl Hungus, of Log Jammin' fame?! PDT_008

I think you would be set with either Holy Divers, Rebel Yell, or Painkiller pickups depending on what specific style you are looking for.

Welcome to the forum!

C-Pig bridge is awsome. Just my opinion :)

Ok, little update here, I've got the guitar, and it really is incredible. The pickups sound astounding too, the cold sweat is above and beyond any other neck pickup I've used. Amazing!
