Title: Darker sounding pickup's in an EC-1000
Post by: BigK on May 23, 2008, 02:38:01 AM
Hi after preparing the EC-1000 to be sold I started playing it again and I figure I'm probaly going to keep it as my band is starting back up again (since im going home).

The problem is is that the miracle men I have in there are a little too bright and sharp, they are also lacking in the mids (a little too scooped) for the stuff I play in the band (mainly Tool, older Chevelle, Foo Fighters, A perfect circle etc) I would also prefer them to be a little bit thicker sounding, and preferably alnico instead of ceramic as-well. Cleans are also quite important but I'm mainly looking for the thicker warmer sound. (I'm not going to be getting rid of the miracle men there going into my schecter 006 tuned to drop Bb)

I play through an Engl Thunder 50 which can be on the brighter side of things as-well.

I was thinking maybe holy-divers or alnico warpigs? Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers Kieran

well engls are quite trebly. Anyway a nice warm pup is the warpig, although proberly to higher output. Maybe get a p90 they are pretty middy

Nailbombs would fit the bill very well. Organic and fat with lots of mids, and extreme clarity.
Warpigs would be a tad overkill I think..

lol you definitely bought the wrong pickup for what you're looking for
the miracle man is a strange and very unique pickup
it sounds bright, sharp and trebly on the first strings, but dark, bassy and really chunky on the lower strings
it doesn't lack mids, but it definitely has a lot more bass and treble than mids

the holy diver works a lot better for tool/apc tones
the warpig sounds more grindy
it has a stoner vibe driving the midrange
although the wapig is higher output, the holy diver sounds more modern and clean through distortion

Its not that I bought the wrong pickup It worked really well for what I was using it for through my HD147. But I've since changed amps and got my PRS Tremonti which has taken over the the drop C# duties from the EC-1000 and I want something different/more versatile for my band stuff. But from what you've said here and others have said on other threads The Holy Diver sounds the way forward.

I'll e-mail Tim and see what he thinks would be best.
