Hello all - does anyone know of a source of reliable guitar pricing? I know that a lot of it depends on where/when you are selling and what you are trying to sell but was wondering if there is anything out there that will help?
I'm looking for a price range on my telecaster (1975 USA made with all original parts).

Depends how quickly you need a price. eBay is a pretty good indicator of what the market is prepared to pay if can have the time to watch a few similar sales end.

Yep, used sales on eBay are the best bet.
And I'd say about £1500 ;)

You can also find out what things have sold for in the recent past on eBay.
Click on advanced search at the top of your eBay page, fill in the keyword search box and then tick the Completed listings only box.
This will give you all recent listings of sold and unsold matching your keyword

I think there's a book published yearly with guitar and amp pricing in it. The guy I bought my JCM800 off had it; he was showing me what i good deal i was getting, lol.

The "Blue Book" is the published price guide for guitars and gives prices in USD. These are obviously the prices in the US. Oddly Strats and Teles are now a bit more expensive in the US than in the UK. It is also not that up to date. Vintage guitar prices have come down quite in recent years.
The main determinant of price of a 1975 Tele will be:
1. Originality: ie all the parts are original and there have been no resprays etc.
2. Condition. Obviously the cleaner the better. If the guitar needs a refret then that should be reflected in the price.
3. Colour: custom colours such as black or sunburst (standard colour for a Strat but custom colour for a Tele) will add to the value.
4. Weight. If the guitar is nice an light it will be easier to sell than a "weightlifter" — a common problem with 70s Fenders.
5. Having the original case will also help the sale.
I work closely with vintage guitar dealers and I would say £1500 is all the money for this guitar assuming it is straight.
Prices of Strats and to a lesser extent Teles drop of after 1974, so don't think because you saw a 1974 Tele at a higher price yours is worth the same. I would compare with the prices of 1975 to 1978 Teles to get a good idea.

It is all original - no resprays etc, weighs 7.5lbs (tried it alongside a 1976 tele that weighed a noticeable amount more so ssume 7.5 is quite light), it is yellow with a white pickguard (assuem this isn't rare!), has it's original (although battered) case and is in reasonable condition i.e. a few marks on the body and back of neck but still very playable.
I'm not really looking at selling it (unless a see a really, really nice PRS that I just can't say no to!). I did see a 1976* tele in pretty much the same condition on vintage and rare guitars website - it was going for £1999. I imagine that V&R are quite overpriced though as this sounds a tad too much to me?

*I pretty much knew that tele prices drop around the mid 70s - if only it was as valuable as a 50's tele!!

And gwem, it's not even necessarily about how they sound (although I'm not a fan of that, either) - it's how they look! Call me fickle, or any other number of words (and you'd probably be right!), but.. yeah well I've said it all before, you get the idea ;)

I actually have to agree with Indy & gwem on the subject though, not everybody here wants pointy death machines, however we don't site and snipe about it at every opportunity.
The jokes been told (too many times) so give it a rest for a while please

Chill out guys, you should all respect everyones opinion on a guitar.
Going back to the topic of guitar pricing, I don't know about it however for a guitar that's over 30 years old you'd need a REALLY good PRS to give up a guitar that old, lol.. :o

Fair response, I'm happy to apologise for pushing things too far. The **** weekend is due to mother-in-law not going home. My wife and her mum went to Canada (since a week last Thursday), they arrived back yesterday morning (having had their flight cancelled the previous day), and it turns out that her mum is now staying until tomorrow. It wouldn't be so bad if either of us actually liked her, but she's just hanging around like a bad smell, and I've basically not seen my wife for 2 weeks now, and it's back to work early tomorrow morning, then band practice (but yay for band practice), so I'll not get any time with her until Wednesday night. Just mad because we have to entertain her mum when she should have just driven home and left us to have some time together. BAH!
Anyway, with that frustration somewhat vented, it's back downstairs to have a cup of tea, ignore the tedious chitter-chatter, and I shall leave you guys to your thread with a heartfelt apology for having taken it over in the first place.
